75 - Lady lady lady - Boogie man orch

Hi, I'm new here (not to the site, just as a member), what is the film that this track is a theme from? I've loved this for such a long time, it has always irritated me that it's not on a 12, I want a full 10 minutes of this bliss!

Slickscarlett: My compliments on your fine sense of taste!

From what I remember when it came out, "Lady, Lady, Lady" wasn't originally from a soundtrack. I do remember hearing it used as background music in a movie later, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. Maybe someone else here can.

    You're right, there's no 12", but there is a 5:00 extended version:

and it's quite fabulous. One of the gems of my collection!

Did the record have an instrumental flip side too?

Yes the US 7" version's side A is instrumental only, (3:19) this instrumental was the most popular version.

That's the one that I have. One of those songs where the instrumental works better than the vocal.

This is the vocal 1. Great track, but yes, the instrumental is the version to play!

Sorry, I meant the B side to that original released version. I was wondering if it had an instrumental mix and if it was the same length as that later release.

    ******

Nice to see this exploratory song getting a fairly universal "thumbs up".
Dramatic marriage of funk and orchestra a la Isaac Hayes/Barry White..... ongoing wah wah , swirling strings , occasional harp strumming ..... and ample french horns :icon_cool: .....

I'm wondering if this could be the only disco record where the "A" side is the instrumental and the "B" side is the vocal ???? :icon_exclaim::icon_question:
    ... Poor Mel ! What a distinction !! :icon_exclaim:

I agree Graham. After hearing that vocal, I'd surely stick with the instrumental!!!

I'm wondering if the misleading [Theme From] is really just another way of saying "instrumental"???? As in "Trammps Disco Theme" or "First Choice Theme" which were instrumentals as opposed to "Theme From Shaft" which is obviously a theme song from a movie.

When I saw the [Theme From] I assumed
soundtrack...but maybe it was just their way of saying "instrumental"?

Original pressings (like mine) have the vocal on side A. Guess they quickly figured out that the vocal just didn't work.

Was "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" another song to have this distinction? The Canadian 12" doesn't even have the vocal; the b-side is the same instrumental folded down to mono.

Part 1 of If You're Gonna Do It by The People's Choice is mainly instrumental (I think it just has the background vocals in the chorus). Part 2 is where the lead singer, Tyrone Brunson, sings the lyrics.

    $200 for a 7" single? Seriously?!

I paid about $4 for mine a few years back, although it's not in great shape. Bought it soley because it had "boogie" and "orchestra" on the label.

Sadly, the days of bringing home piles of vinyl for cheap are over.

Is this price for the UK version with the Vocal A side only?

The US 7" release must have sold well among Disco fans, I've received a couple of 7" collections, and I have several copies of the US version in various conditions.

MIXMACHINE thats not the u.k version its the original u.s version,it was released in the u.k [on contempo] and did also sell quite well, the u.k version and the second u.s version with the inst as the a side you would only get 10 dollars tops

hey GRAHAM thats nothing to pay for a 7" single for u.k collectors for sought after stuff we would probibly call that a cheapie:icon_lol: if you could see what some records sell for here, you see here rare soul recods have been changing hands for large sums of money since the late 60s so its the norm, spend a few years like that and it becomes an addiction,i spent so much before christmas my new years resolution was no more ebay for 3 months..and i was back there on jan 1st:icon_mrgreen:

Ok, I see now, I need to check my copies closely, I didn't even know about the first edition, much less that it was a collectors item....

Re: 75 - Lady lady lady - Boogie man orch

After listening to vocal and instrumental version, I think the vocal version is waaaay better. There's something about the instrumentation that I find weak. Maybe it's the sound of the snare. Sounds like someone hitting a cardboard box. Without the vocals, it sounds like some bad 70s grindhouse music. The guy sounds like Al Wilson - Come on!!! That's gotta count for something. And I like the chorus: 'laaaaady lady' I think it just sounds nice on top of the music.

That 5 minute version of the instrumental on that rare RCA disco sampler is available on a CD called Northern Disco Vol 1 by Milliondollardisco. I listened to it, and it just sounds like it was created by repeat editing the song. No different than how the Bee Gees tunes were extended on their 12"s. The CD has some other rarities like the extended re-edit Disco International version of Delicious by the Duprees, and some track called Consideration by Gail. The sound quality really sucks. It's not the crackle of the vinyl that is annoying. It's the way the audio swaps channels every now and then for a split second. I don't know if that was created by accident by the software they used to clean up the sound, or if they did that on purpose to watermark their CD audio, so they would be able to tell if someone bootlegged their bootleg.

Anyway, back to the song. In a nutshell, vocal version good; instrumental, so so.
