    Help, I'm new to disco!!

    You can call me Lee...
...and I usually hang out at garagepunk.com forums where we talk about rare 60's garage and 70's punk and 50's rock'n'roll. I know how people react when a new guy (or girl) show up, asking all sorts of stupid questions just because they are new to 60's garage, 70's punk etc etc...

But please! I don't know where to go next. I'm crazy about disco but I've always been too pre-occupied with punk, garage etc etc to dig any deeper than yer average disco compilation. I don't know any people in real life who share my interest so I haven't really gone anywhere with it.

But internet might be of some help here (or you, rather).

And I'm from sweden so I'm not 100% with the english language...

Thanks in advance and hope I'm not making you throw up here.

    /Lee

    Quick response there Bernie, thanks!!!

And thanks for that list, now I got something to do...

The songs I get seriously floored by is stuff like I Feel Love : Donna Summer, Funky Town : Lipps Inc. and You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) : Sylvester.

Particularly I Feel Love sounds so different from the more organic-sounding side of disco with the strings and a funky bass-line and saxes and stuff. I love that too but the Metropolis-ian air of I Feel Love is just priceless! If anyone has any tips in that direction, please post!

Thanks again guys, I have a feeling that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

There is one man who is somewhat tied to the three songs you mentioned: Patrick Cowley.

Patrick Cowley does the keyboards on You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). He also did a very famous remix of I Feel Love. And he also did a remix of Funkytown.

Look up Patrick Cowley (and Sylvester) in other areas on this site and also at youtube.com

    Especially listen to Megatron Man.

He died early, but left his mark.

There is tons to listen to from the disco era. Good luck and welcome.

    Hi Lee

If you are floored by I FEEL LOVE then you MUST get DONNA SUMMER's album ONCE UPON A TIME which contains an electronic suite featuring NOW I NEED YOU / WORKING THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT and QUEEN FOR A DAY.

Also check out GIORGIO MORODER [Summer's producer] with tracks like EVOLUTION,FROM HERE TO ETERNITY,BABY BLUE,E=mc2 and THE CHASE.

Giorgio also produced 2 great classics in that style for SUZI LANE [Harmony] and MADLEEN KANE [You can].

GINO SOCCIO also did a few Moroder-like tracks including THE VISITORS,RHYTHM OF THE WORLD and REMEMBER.

It sounds like you're more into the eurodisco sounds which featured more synthesizers and electronic instruments than the funk and soul disco from, say, the USA. I'm not really into that sound, but I can recommend you titles that feature a lot of synths and electronic sounds, but keep the funk going underneath:

'Music Man' by Revanche from 1979. Every track is a winner on this record.
'Moon Boots' by ORS. How could anyone not love this track! :)
'Make Me Feel Alright' by Karen Silver. I think this is a Canadian disco track. Nice synth feel.

Re: Help, I'm new to disco!!

Thank you guys for all the great pointers and tips n stuff. I just sent an order for Giorgio Moroder and three cd's by Cerrano - kick ass covers on all of 'em!!

I also took a trip downtown to one of my local used record store. I bought 2 by Stargard albums (hmm, produced by Mark Davis!) and 1 by Carrie Lucas. Cool stuff. Not to mention, cheap.

Again, thanks. I will now engage in lurking position.

    Ta-taaa!

You might want to check out just about every album produced and put out by Donna Summer's producer, Giorgio Moroder (with Giorgio singing and playing without Donna); just about all of his disco stuff was electronic (as it was known back in the day, not technotronic; that term was not invented yet).

Just put "Giorgio Moroder" in the search engine and you're off!!

Re: Help, I'm new to disco!!

Now that you're no longer totally new to disco, strutting into say Snickars Records you need get some respect, or what? Here’s a few names and titles to drop to let them know who they are dealing with. Lean against the counter, eye the vinyls on the walls with an air mild curiosity and say: “Hmmm…right…but have you got anything by DI NINO then?” ( The Italian Di Nino has a cult reputation for funky, sleazy 7-inchers and assorted mutant underground disco projects, definitely good to impress your dj friends with). “No? Here’s my address, keep a copy for me if you come across his “Roots” album.” To really intimidate them go:” Right now I’m going thru a MATTHEW LARKIN CASSELL phase so have a look if you can find anything for me by him, an album would be fab, an original pressing that is.” ( Cassell causes fits on any hip dancefloor with weird mixtures of folk and soul ) .

That's funny... it doesn't have to be in mono - or quadro maybe?
