    The meaning of ''payola''

In 1975, Gamble-Huff's Philadelphia International Records (PIR) became involved in a payola scandal.
The meaning of payola from Disc jockey Summary

''The great power enjoyed by disc jockeys in the marketing of recordings encouraged corruption. The practice of "payola" (a contraction of "pay" and "Victrola") in which the disc jockey was bribed with money or a share of the publishing rights of the song was widely used to get airplay. The smaller record companies commonly paid disc jockeys and juke box operators to use their recordings. This practice came under scrutiny of the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of the 1950s and the ensuing Payola scandal ended the careers of several influential disc jockeys''

    Re: The meaning of ''payola''

One of them DJs was the father of rock and roll, Alan Freed, who ended in bankruptcy and dying too young... the very same day I was born (January 20th, 1965).

In Argentina, payola is usual in radio and TV, and not only in music shows (some prime-time fiction rents its soundtrack space to "radio cuts" of new albums). It's illegal, but every radio station with power does it. In fact, some radio DJs are incredibly sincere answering claims from listeners on the air: "Marina wants to hear some Zeppelin, OK... but you'll have to wait a bit because, you know, we have some compromises" :icon_exclaim:

and then you listen to Scissor Sisters and Robbie Williams for the nth time. :icon_rolleyes:
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
