Define "better". Most new Japanese releases are digital clones of the same discs sold around the world.

Japanese vinyl, on the other hand, was often vastly superior to North American or even European pressings.

The Japanese tend to take much more time and care in the remastering process when compared to others. This is also true when it comes to Classical Music CDs. The Japanese tend to be more detail and quality oriented.

As Ken pointed out the Japanese pressings seem to be overall more detailed and rounded especially in the bottom end department. They generally seem to sound more fuller and convincing and lets also remember the vast majority of these Japanese releases especially of the soul, funk and disco genres are exclusive to Japan and aren't available elsewhere.
