    The Doris Day disco connection

    *****

and this is a HUGE stretch .... but its the coffee working here ..... :icon_razz:

Remember .... (some amongst us) ... those horrible shocking times of the Sharon Tate murders in Hollywood . One of the most gruesome ever ...Sharon was what ... eight months pregnant ....It's been said that Charlie picked that house because he mistakenly thought Terry Melcher was still living there . Terry ....Doris Day's son ... was a record producer who apparently turned down Manson as an artist to work with.

Well I've always been curious .... record producer ? What ones ? I've never happened upon any Terry Melcher produced records ?? (but then, I should say I also haven't actively tried)

Well, I finally now have . And it's a disco record!
...Or rather it's a song that will soon be more known as a disco record .

The song is COMMON THIEF later re-recorded by Vicki Sue Robinson.
It was originally released in 1974 as a mid-tempo piano driven pop song by its writer .... Bill House ... produced by Doris' son , Terry Melcher and Beach Boy Bruce Johnston ....in a style like what..... think ... Little River Band ...Elvin Bishop .

(so I guess this is another one for the cover list Marky ) .

It's really pretty good .... (well produced !) although rather bitter, a downer .
    ... if that's your belief ... you're no better than a common thief ...

It took some imagination on Warren Schatz part to turn it into an uptempo disco song .... Wonder how it even came about ... maybe thru Bruce Johnston who did some disco himself .... ?? Both versions on RCA ...

So..... That's as close as I can tie in Doris Day * with anything disco !! .... .:icon_mrgreen:

Doris begat Terry .... who begat COMMON THIEF ... which was then turned into a disco favourite by Vicki Sue Robinson.

Terry Melcher produced the early Byrds classic LPs. I think he died recently. [yep in 2004 of melanonma.] He was a player, back in the day...I think he dated Candice Bergen when they were "Young Hollywood" royalty [yep, they were together at the time of the Manson murder thing].....I'll do a google on him....

also, was part of the Rip Chords with future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston: "Hey Little Cobra" was their hit; worked on "Pet Sounds"; co-wrote 'Kokomo"
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

    oh dear....

Cher's reaction to the pressure Terry Melcher applied when her version of "All I Really Want To Do" scotched the sales of the Byrds 45 was less than complimentary; she described him as "horribly competitive", and "a total *******".

Re: The Doris Day disco connection

I miss the days when different artists put out competing singles of the same song [Sixties/Seventies era...] Dusty Springfield once said in a documentary that Dionne Warwick "HATED HER" cuz Dusty & her producers would grab Dionne's new LPs & would re-record Dionne's various LP tracks before Dionne had a chance to get them released as future singles.... I love the competing versions of stuff...nothing like that ever happens anymore, does it??? :icon_question::icon_confused::icon_exclaim:

Markey: speaking of Dionne, did you hear that a couple years ago she was detained at the airport with 11 joints in her purse? She claimed someone had planted them there but since celebrities seem to have security around them often that seems hard to swallow. And Rolling Stone magazine really ripped her a new one: they said that if she'd smoked all 11 of those joints, she probably couldn't have found her way to San Jose or anywhere else...

Ms.Warwick is very bitter about people stealing her songs isn't she? I saw her interviewed once & she said she hated Cilla Black for stealing her stuff too. Let it go girl!

The song was given to Sonny Bono for Cher, but he said they were not interested. After Sonny turned down the Bobby Russell (R.I.P.), Snuff Garrett quit as the Producer because he thought this song would be a #1 hit for her. Cher did not find out about this until a few years later. It hit #1 for Vicki lawrence. Bobby Russell was her husband at the time. As the song climbed up the chart, Vicki's marriage was disintegrating, and she says recording the album was a strain and brings up unpleasant memories. "I sort of got out of music after that" she says.........

    this !!!!

    and

    another Doris Day /Disco connection:

in 1980, Viola Wills covered :

    wiki:

    "Secret Love"

    is a
popular song written in 1953 with music by Sammy Fain and lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. Its first performance was in the film Calamity Jane by Doris Day. It received an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Doris Day also recorded the best-selling record of the song, which reached #1on both the Billboard and Cash Box charts in 1954.
    SECRET LOVE

    a rather pedestrian exercise .

    file under
"gosh- any song can be made disco!"

in fact, both these songs seem to illustrate that.
