Just wondering ....
.... it seems the majority of members here were too young to club at the time ..... so does this mean you've never had an opportunity to dance to disco??? :icon_eek: :icon_rolleyes:
Or for that matter... never heard disco (however you want to define it) in a club setting --retro or otherwise??![]()

As if! I'm way too young, but I do remember my mum & dad talking about "discos" - where young people gathered on a Friday & Saturday night, dressed in white suits, stack heels & too much blusher (not sure what mum wore) and danced to big hits by Chic, Edwin Starr, George Benson & Earth Wind & Fire.
Me? I was too busy watching The Monkees on TV and dreaming of Mark Spitz![]()
Dance Till You Drop
I did,of course,since 1975.But I had no idea that the majority
of members here were younger than say 30? I aways got the
impression that most of the posters actually lived during
discos heydays.
Thom
yes many many times during the late 70's and into the 80's here in Toronto and once I went to The Saint in New York which was awesome
You got to bone it like you own it
The 80's was spent mostly in the skating rink - the infamous Twin City in NJ to be exact, but I spent some weekends in the clubs - Zanibar, The Peppermint Lounge, Sensations, etc. In the 70's, yeah too young to get into the clubs, but where I grew up, it was an actual "neighborhood" and the neighborhood kids (with me heading the pack) would throw parties in the community center/summer day camp center. And mostly what was played would be the dance music at the time, examples: Grooveline, Boogie Oogie Oogie, We're on the Right Track, etc. We had strobe lights and black lights and chapperonesbut it was a lot of fun.
Or course, I was basically the house DJ, as I seem to be the only kid with records(and I didn't want to let them out of my sight):icon_cool:

"The Problem is....Choice."
In the 90s when I did most of my clubbing, there were DJs that would play a short section of disco tunes in the middle of the usual house and hi-NRG faves of the day. Usually Don't Stop Till You Get Enough was the fave to spin because songs like Le Freak got played out a few years earlier, and YMCA was just too corny.
Disco Funk
No, basically because the clubs I frequent play nothing but crappy modern R&B music. (Beyonce....etc) The closest I got was Kenny Loggins - Footloose.
To which point, I got the hell out of there. Saturday night in a nightclub, and being subjected to this tripe. Absolute garbage.![]()
Keep it Vinyl....:icon_lol:
Yep, starting in 1979 and starting DJing in 1980 as well... Actually my dance instructor was also on dance fever....
I wasn't even BORN in the 70's but hopefully you can find clubs that play Disco & Funk here in Paris.
DJs like Norman Jay, Danny Krivit, David Mancuso, Joe Claussell, Luoie Vega, and many more come and play pretty often here ... So we're fortunate enough to here good Dance Music ...
Nicky Siano will play in in Paris in July for the Funkanostra party on a peniche (boat) on the Seine .... Is he GOOD?

What an eye opening question. I wish that every one could have experienced the club scene. My hat goes off to those that were not there, yet still have the Disco spirit. Talk about the power of music!. Time for us to plan and execute an annual Discomusic.com Disco party. I vote for Las Vegas.
Disco Lives in L.A!!!
I was too young to club back in the day, but I make time to get down to disco every day in my living room and whenever it is played in nightclubs.
I dance to it all the time...
in my own house all alone!
I wish there was a cool disco club around here but theres not. There is a variety club nearby Ive been to a few times and they play some of the commons, but how many times do I have to listen to "hes the greatest dancer" before hating it?
Im under 30 and disco was censored and forbidden the whole time I was growing up. In fact, it wasnt untill the 90s that I got to start hearing it.
All those songs and artists were brand new to me.
Started dancing to Disco @ age 16 in 1976.. although I was dancing since I was about 3..to Motown and anything that had a good beat.. But Nothing beats Being in a Disco Dancing to Disco in the 70's~!! I wouldnt change The era I was a teenager in for anything.....:icon_biggrin:![]()
Hey Dayna, maybe you, or another disco child member here, have listened LIVE to a Nicky Siano set,.
I'd like to know how good it is, and if he's worth spending some big money this summer.
I think he is but .... would like to be sure
I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )
I hear that Dayna. I see we are the same age and like you I wouldn't change a thing about the 70's disco experience. How fortunate we were :icon_biggrin::icon_cool:
I don't think I caught a Siano set so I can't comment. From my experience though, the top or bigger club settings combined the music mixing, the smoke machines, and various lights to set the mood for a magical experience in the discos.
Find them and destroy them!
Yes - danced to the music in the West End of London, as well as elsewhere - from 1976 aged 16 to 1981 - aged 21...:icon_cool:

Well I was born in March 58 and I started my clubbing life blagging my way into Cheeky Pete's in Richmond Surrey in 74/75 - I too didn't realise how ancient I am compared to a lot of you guys. I'm proud to say that I shook my groove thang all over the place BITD. While never claiming to be Astaire or Travolta, I like to feel I always brought something to the dancefloor. It made me feel good and certainly gave many other people a good laugh! These days my kids call my smooth moves Dad Dancing - They can't imagine the old man in flares and platforms and later in pegs with a wedge and white sox looking the biz.
I had the pleasure of hearing Nicky live several times at The Gallery "..1n 1977..
Richie Kaczor was the DJ at 54 when I went there.. Nicky usually only played on weekdays because of his gig at the Gallery.. Nicky only worked at 54 for a few months because he partied to much and got fired:icon_eek:."That had to be alot if your talking excess at 54~!!!"
But both are excellent Spinners..so YES he's worth spending the money on..

Gosh! You guys are young pups.
I remember dancing at discos in the '60s!!!!!:icon_redface: Mind you, the discos in the '60s weren't quite the same as the ones in the '70s. By 1979 I was 27 years old and almost a whole generation older that the punters who danced to the records I played as a DJ.
No wonder I don't get on with you guys.

Yes, I was 13 in 1979 & our local venue (grew up in the sticks: Cornwall, England) would do an early disco for us kids, I loved disco music & readily took to the floor.
I was in a trendy bar in Vauxhall 2 weeks ago & they were advertising Balearic Ibiza sounds in their clubroom, but in the front bar a dj was playing out&out disco - there was no question which was the best place to be.
The atmosphere was great - everybody smiling, swaying, singing along.
A group of us were playing a game of what we wanted to hear next & a few times a couple of us hit the jackpot. After about 2 hours of this the dj must have been asked to play up to date sounds, cos the music changed & with it the atmosphere died.
We later went on to a club & danced to mainly funky house/electro but that earlier bar was by far the best part of our night & we all agreed that the venue should have made more of it & advertised it as such, & they would be onto a winner!
Disco Saved My Life!
I was born in 1957 in a rural small town in the Midwest USA (Ogilvie, Minnesota, pop. 386) I went to college 40 miles away in St. Cloud which got its first disco in the fall of 1976. I was a loser IMO until I started going to the club. Something in the music lifted me up, gave me confidence, and carried me away. I discovered how to have fun and people started to like me and enjoy dancing with me. It was when I first started to like myself. I didn't know I could dance, but I found out that I was really good at it. I was hooked.
Upon graduating from school, I moved to Minneapolis. I never quit going to the clubs until the late 80's. I never quite picked up on the transition from Disco to Hi NRG... It was all DISCO to me and I enjoyed every minute of the disco nightlife until house music started to take over. Something was lost at that point, but I can not name it.
So, anyway, every year these days I throw a few big disco parties here on Vashon Island and it has become a must-do event around here. Check it out on youtube as "disco party Vashon Island".

I know what you mean Norm, I didn't know I could dance either until I started frequenting discos; in fact, I remember when I first started going to discos, I didn't dance for fear of making a fool of myself (you know how you are when you're a youngun), and I began practicing in front of the mirror before I would go out, to disco music of course, and found out I was as good or better than most on the dance floor! Wow, what memories. Thanks Norm for bringing that issue up!
Garry
WOW!!! what a great thread... It's nice to see that there are some of us still young at heart in here...lol.. but it is even cooler to see the wealth of knowledge many of you have, especially now realizing that many of you were not around in the 70's or 80's... Kudos!!!
To answer this grrrreat question... YES... I proudly admit that I am old enough :icon_rolleyes: to have been able to dance my butt off on some of the greatest dance floors in Disco history...
Hopefully I will not bore you guys/gals but here goes...
Began dancing to great disco music at age 15 in 1976 in local dancehall parties in NJ (Liceo Cubano...lol). Then began dancing in the following discoteques in order (if age has not faded my memory...lol)
1977 - early 1978
1. Strawberry Patch - Wayne NJ
2. Fire & Ice - NJ
3. Soap Factory - NJ
Early 1978 - 1979 graduated to NY Clubs
1. Infinity - my first NY experience...where I had the pleasure of dancing to music played by the great Jim Burgess.
2. Xenon - walked in for first time in late 1978/early 1979 and danced the next 5 years away as a regular in my home away from home, listening to and losing myself in the sounds of the incredible Tony Smith. Toni Colandreo was pretty good also. No other club came close to the feel and fun of Xenon for me.
1979 - beyond.. was able to enjoy dancing to the following greats:
1. Frank Houlihan at Ice Palace on 57th Street;
2. Richie Kaczar at Studio (although I only went a few times in its hey-day was not my fav);
3. Robbie Leslie at the Saint - hung out there weekly during the Siant's later days 1984 - 1986
4, and lastly visited David Mancuso's Loft a couple of times in early 1980's (great sound, not great mixes).
I also danced to disco at the following NY clubs, but cant remember the djs:
1. Hurrah
2. Mud Club (ok, it was punk rock mostly...lol, but still fun)
3. New York, New York
4. Visage
5. Red Parrot
6. Bond's
7. Palladium
8. Area
9. Rock Lounge (same owner as Xenon - Howard Stein)
10. Underground
11. Limelight
12. Back Streets in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Thanks for starting this thread...
Mike
