Friday night happy hour w/Sam "ALL JAM" #17 (Cool

After a few weeks away, I'm back after another happy hour this past Friday @ Larry Holmes Ringside. Slow night considering it was the day after Thanksgiving, nonetheless, the few that were there heard some great classics including:

Magic's in the air (Space ranger) - Sun
Dance lady dance - The Crown Heights Affair
You - Maze featuring Frankie Beverly
    Black Cow - Steely Dan
    I like it - B.T. Express
Do it (till the fluid gets hot) - Breakwater
Spanish hustle - The Fatback band
I want you - Marvin Gaye
    Here's to you - Skyy
Risin' to the top - Keni Burke

some laid back funky cool classics. On the smooth/soft side, the following was played:

Below us, all the city lights - Tower of Power
    I had a choice - Sun
Love on a two way street - The Moments
    The Bells - The Originals
East River Drive - Grover Washington, Jr.

As always I enjoyed playing and listening to them. Hope you have some good memoires that make you feel the same. Love to hear your comments on these.

    Easy,

The Bells and Love On a Two Way Street.

I love it when a dj goes digging. Those two cuts are full of memories.

What is Space Ranger's cut like? Don't believe I've heard it.

I have got to get up there and hear you. I went looking for the club during the summer while I was driving back from Easton and got myself lost due to some very bad directions from, of all people, Larry's niece. You know the deal, she said turn right but remembers telling me turn left. I couldn't win this one. :x :)

    Nick:

Glad you liked the slow classics. I realize this is a disco site, however, just like everything else from that era, I love the slow jams. As for 'Magic's in the air (Space Ranger)' by Sun, one of my favorites by them off their fourth LP 'Sun over the universe'. Signature Sun sound without hard driving funk, but rather a laid back dance groove ala 'Radiation level'. If you ever come by the club while I'm spinning the happy hour that would be cool.

    Sammy--

What a surprise it was for me to see you had played Steely Dan's "Black Cow", for it comes off their superb "Aja" album from 1977. It's the first single off of that album also. "Spanish Hustle" by Fatback Band was one of the first early disco records I had ever heard on many of the 70's disco shows that came out in the early 90's. I liked it the first time I heard it and have it on a CD that I burned. "I Want You" by Marvin Gaye was a nice tune, laid back and something you could sway to. On the ballad sides, "Love In A Two-Way Street" by The Moments is a fine song and "The Bells" by The Originals I feel is often overshadowed by "Baby, I'm For Real", which I tended to hear more on the 60's oldies stations.

    Well Sammy,

Another list from out of the top drawer! Spanish Hustle was a top ten hit in England, I recall, and was, of course, a firm favourite with the JP's. Hard driving rhythms topped by those soaring trumpet solos! Perfect! And Rising To The Top was another anthem for us! Still sends a shiver down my spine whenever I heard it! Quality - 100%! I love that Crown Heights Affair track - what a great piece of dance music that was! And I love Space Ranger by Sun. A nice lively bouncy track - excellent!

Anything by Grover Washington keeps the Jazzman happy! Nice selection! And Love On A Two Way Street! Haven't heard that one for ages!

Who knows? Maybe I may pop in one day???

    :)

Robbie, thank you for the comments. I'm glad you liked the tracks, especially the slow jams. Everyone seems to really be feeling The Moments and Originals. Since that's the case, I'm going to to dig deeper into the early '70's next week. This was a week where I played alot of tracks I haven't played or listened o in awhile. 'Spanish hustle' by Fatback was one of these. Jazzman, you know your comments are always appreciated and respected. Regarding 'Dance Lady Dance' by The Crown Heights Affair, this is one I hadn't played in awhile, so when I played it on Friday I was groovin' to it hard because I forgot how good it really was. Same with 'Space Ranger' by Sun and 'East River Drive' by Grover Washington, Jr. I've been playing all of these alot since Friday. This is the very reason why I explain to people why I would never get rid of my old records. No matter how time passes, good music stands the test of time and always sounds good. By the way Jazz, I have not forgotten about our on-going battle. I'm working on my 'N's and O's so be on the lookout.

Well Jazz, it's been long enough since my last entry on the on-going jazz challenge we are having so let me stir things up with four of my favorite jazz and jazz influenced tracks in my N-O round:

Nautilis - Bob James (A funky jazz track from back in the day that is a fave among old school hip-hop DJ's)
Naima - Cedar Walton (A great piece of instrumental jazz which is laid back but cool)

    and 'O'h by the way,

Onward 'til morning - Donald Byrd (Easily one of my all-time favorites and probably my favorite piece from this great composer)
On a mission - Greg Osby (A track from '91 from one of my favorite jazz musicians; The reason I like Osby so much is because he does not conform to what his critics say he should be. A true genius of fusing traditional jazz with todays street sounds)

Talk about worth the wait, I love this round. Can you come back after this. Hope so, I miss the daily battles.

A nice call on your tunes! Anything by Donald Byrd has got to be pretty decent! I also like that Bob James track, Nautilis! The other two I did not know, although there are some other trax by Cedar Walton that I know very well ... I have never heard of Greg Osby (yet!!)

Anyway - on to my long delayed O's:

Ronnie Laws - Outta Be A Law. Haven't played that one for ages but I think it was from 1980 ...

    as was ...

George Benson - Off Broadway - [not to be mixed up with On Broadway] - an excellent instrumental from his 1980 LP that was a real hit with the Jazz Pilgrims ...

Charles Earland - Over And Over - excellent piece of hard driving fusion from around '78.

    And on to my P's:

Pete's Crusade - Light Of The World - a nce bit of trumpet-led fusion from the London boys from 1980!

Peg - Mike Mandell - jazzy dancer from the late 70's

Pooh-Pooh la-La - Roy Ayers - nice jazz tinged mellow groove with a twist of humour from THE Vibes man!

    Hope you like those!

    :)
