Mine would probably be Twilight Zone by Manhattan Transfer.. Such a good song for us dramatic dancers to act out a story though our dance... basically doing drag on the dance floor .. :icon_lol:

Well, looking at Billboard's 1980 list-- there was some bleedover from 1979 into 1980 [ personal faves like "Was That All It Was"/ "Vertigo/Relight My Fire"/"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" are listed on the 1980 chart]...but for me 1980 was the year of CHANGE: "THE GLOW OF LOVE" LP

To Change's detractors, the studio group was nothing more than a poor man's Chic. But knowledgeable disco and R&B enthusiasts knew better; Change wasn't a carbon copy of Chic any more than jazz great Chet Baker was a clone of Miles Davis. Without question, Change was heavily influenced by the Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards sound; nonetheless, Change had an energy of its own, and anyone who seriously listened to its first album, The Glow of Love, could easily tell the difference between Chic and Change (just as serious jazz fans can tell the difference between Baker's trumpet playing and Davis'). Produced by Jacques Fred Petrus and arranged by David Romani and Paolo Gianolio, this 1980 debut is a disco/R&B masterpiece. The playful opener "A Lover's Holiday" is Change's best-known song, but the group is just as captivating on the sassy "It's a Girl's Affair" and the passionate "Angel in My Pocket." Meanwhile, Luther Vandross is featured on "Searching" and the dreamy, laid-back title song, which became a quiet storm favorite and demonstrates that not everything Change recorded was aimed at the dancefloor.[WUT???? ..."Searching" NOT a dance record????? :icon_question::icon_question::icon_question:] In 1980, Vandross had yet to provide his first solo album, although many of the people who heard his performances on those two gems agreed that a solo career was inevitable; and sure enough, his first big solo hit, "Never Too Much," came out the following year. Excellent from start to finish, The Glow of Love is Change's most essential album.

Oh yes, I love that track; it had the 'disco' syndrum sound that was a leftover from '79. Fabulous!
Hard to pick a favourite as it was a good year but 2 'disco' stormers that spring to mind are Baby O's 'In The Forest' & Harlow's 'Take Off'.

One question I had, is what are we using to define 1980? I think the Patrice Rushen Album and the France Joli album which included Haven't you heard and Feel like dancing were released in the fall of 1979 but the singles probably did not make it mainstream until 1980.

If that is the case, i would also include Prince, i want to be your lover, whose album was released in 1979.


Either way, 1980 was probably my favorite year for dance music

I can agree with all that was posted. I love the whole Change album from that year with Glow of Love being one of my favoritists (I made up a word;)) songs of all time. I always wanted to dance to that at my wedding reception. :) I also like to make an honorable mention of the Dynasty song "I've just begun to love you" and Kano's "I'm Ready".

1980 was such a stonking good year for music, it's hard to choose just one record. Some of the songs from my personal soundtrack to that time, which always takes me back, is something like this:
