It takes more than a voice to be a diva. Did she ever show any signs of Divarishness?
Personally, I'd say her non-position in the Diva stakes was well earned. Totally forgetable for me, sorry to say.
One of the most underrated Diva's in my opinion is Cory Daye.. Her voice is unique .. From her big band sound in Dr Buzzards original Savannah band to her hi energy disco sound on Pow wow and Green light , She is one of my favorites..what are your thoughts on Ms Daye ?
Cory Daye: The Voice of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band

If you want to place her in the Diva category of Miss Summer or Miss Ross, I would say no but she has presence and the right attitude to front a classy group like Dr. Buzzard's!
my GOODness: underrated hardly even BEGINS to describe this fantastic lady! In my opinion, the ONLY reason she has never and STILL never gets the attention her awesome talent deserves is because she is associated with a group that recorded SO sporadically (just like Patti Austin, who ironically is also featured on the debut, classic Savannah Band album). Her voice and style on the Savannah albums (as well as her solo dubut) will always warm my heart and I don't think I'll ever understand why so called "singers' who don't even have a fraction of her gifts are so much better known. When I achieve my goal of a prominent position in the music industry, she will be one of the first of my idols I'll seek out! Cory, I'll always have a smile for you, pass the peace pipe. I'm usually known as ol'skinflint, but call me, for now, Mister Love! Stay for me, sour and sweet....there's lemon in the honey.....
Miss Cory Daye was/IS a wonderful vocalist with sass and spirit and spunk. Her Dr. Buzzard vocals are totally innovative in melding jazz phrasing into the disco realm...I smile every time I hear her bend those notes and sing funny, witty lines such as...
"Ain't it funny what a little love can do...it's better than poison, so much stronger than glue"
"I'll play the fool for you--buy you things that I cannot afford.."
"And I'm gonna go to school for you boy--just to get my equivalency diploma"
"Tommy Mottola lives on the run...blowin' his mind on cheap grass and wine, oh ain't it crazy baby yeah"
"They'll tell you a lie with a Colgate smile--hey hey baby"
"And she goes next door--you know that she just plays the whore...."
They're all the same--all the SLUTS & the SAINTS...poor misery uh oh Cherchez la Femme" [literal translation: "look for the woman"--meaning that behind a man's sometimes dumb decisions, there's probably a woman--i.e. the Power Of The Pussy.] :icon_mrgreen:
Disco bliss. :icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin:![]()

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
You've got to realise that Cory Daye didn't have much impact over here in the U.K. Personally, I listened to the Dr. Buzzard records with total disdain, as they sounded waaay too old fashioned and sub-Manhattan Transfer, who were also mostly given the elbow, by Brit DJs. As for Pow Wow....uugghh!!! I shudder, just to think of it. Kid Creole....yep, he had some attitude, with some serious grooves and came at a time that was just right.

They'll tell you a lie with a colgate smile, hey, baby
Love you one second and hate you the next one, oh, ain't it crazy, yeah
Big Buzzard fan.
It's wonderful to me to see these amazingly well made videos which I didn't know existed and be able to see Cory Daye present herself as vibrant and as elegant in person as her recorded voice projects . The entire Dr. Buzzard ensemble . They had it down exactly right ....... with these videos as evidence . Love watching them .
Only in America? Can this be ? .....:icon_razz:........ :icon_cool: :icon_cool: :icon_cool:...........

Baby, take me
high upon a hillside
high up where the stallion
meets the sun
Above quote From a UK viewer under the "Sunshower" video at Youtube:icon_mrgreen:Fantastic. This track really stands the test of time. Reminds me of my childhood and DJing on pirate radio in South London- used to end my show with this!
I also loved Dr Buzzard/Corey Daye and Kid Creole, how can any Disco fan not love the music of the team that gave us "Native New Yorker" :icon_rolleyes:

British Boy
and Love Miss Cory Daye.
Dr Buzzard certainly hit home for me here.
"Gonna' have a Pow Wow-pass the peacepipe"
Kid Creole (aka August Darnell) is also producer/writer of Machine's There But For The Grace Of God Go I and was producer for Don Armando's 2nd Ave Rhumba Band and their hit Deputy Of Love.
And all of this before Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
I couldn't give a monkeys if Corey Daye is a diva or not, she's got the voice of an angel and that's good enough for me! Cherchez La Femme rang my bell 30 odd years ago wether it sounded old fashioned or not and it does today. I seem to remember a Glen Miller Swing revival in the UK at the time too.
Right on.....kim58!!!!
Hurray--a Cory Daye fan club! I have loved her voice and looks and charm ever since first hearing "Cherchez La Femme," which is (good heavens) over 30 years ago now :icon_eek:. Suddenly feeling so very old...
I don't know, but it seems there aren't many singers who could have carried off the disco rhythm, the conversational lyric, and jazzy melody with the apparent ease of Ms. Daye.
Talk to the people in charge. Demand "Cory & Me" on CD!
Make that feeling come again!
