    Gwen Guthrie Remix

As a great fan, I thought I pretty much had all the 12"s and Remixes on Gwen Guthrie. I have just found a Euro 12" which is an original press from the early 80's. One side is the US Remix of 'it should have been you', this is the Larry Levan version, but not billed as such. The other side is an 8min plus Remix of the (first)LP track 'Dance fever'. Apparantly this is only available on this 12". I wondered if anybody knew of this track and who mixed it. They seemed to have issued different mixes and tracks in different countries, an example being Peek-a boo. All the other versions I've seen, including Remix ones have a shorter version on, but the UK 12" is well over 8mins and the other side a ballad 'For you with a melody too' is also significantly remixed.

Sorry, I don't have any information to add about Gwen, Zef , but what you are describing is another unique thing about collecting disco ... one more thing that makes it special.

Is there any other music style where depending upon where it was pressed, you might wind up with a different version ???

    Thanx
    It is interesting
Makes me wonder just what else I'm missing out on. I've also got a 12minute version of Lipps Inc-Funky Town which as far as I know only ever came out in Mexico...or did it?

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

My favorite Gwen Guthrie song has always been "Close To You" The Levan remix of course
Composer Burt Bacharach called it his favorite version of the song, ever.

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

i'm sorry about this guys.. this is the second Guthrie thread i have blasted back from the past.. i just wanted to clarify with Zef - if he is talking about an 8 mins plus version of Peek-A-Boo or Dance Fever?

i also thought that there was only one remix of Peek-A-Boo, which timed out at (6:28)

i know there is indeed an (8:22) of Dance Fever available on 12". i've never heard it, is it radically different from the (6:26) album version?

Gwen Guthrie - It Should Have Been You (US Remix)

anyone know if the (7:05) Levan mix of Hopscotch is on CD anywhere!?
there is a mis-print on the label it was issued with.. the label states (8:05) when it's really (7:05) - this is a different edit to the full blown (8:16) version issued on the Padlock E.P.

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

Just made an enquiry with a seller on Gemm.com

there is indeed a 12" with:

    (A) For You (With A Melody Too) (5:12) / (B) Peek-A-Boo (8:22)

funny how it's the exact same (8:22) timing as the rare mix of Dance Fever ??

Glad you got your answer on peek a boo Jackson, Ive been away in Mexico. What about the first UK 12" mix of Hopscotch which is the extended version of the straight up Sly and Robbie version and is also miss-printed on the label which says 5.19 when it is at least 7mins with a nice instrumental outro and definitly different to any of Larry's mixes.

I just played and timed the first UK12" (12IS 106) and it clocks in at 7.50 with the label saying 5.19 (which I think is possibly the LP length but havent checked). I had forgotten about the nice mid break on the 12". Although I do like the Levan mixes I think I prefer this one.

From what I remember it is different though, I havent listened for a long time, but I vaguely remember at the time being surprised at a ballad remix. I will give it a play again soon to refresh memory though.

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

yeah it's remixed.. there is nothing special about it though, if i'm honest.

i like the extended version of God Don't Like Ugly, that's nice. Oh What A Life and You're The One are extended on the Ticket To Ride compilation. again nothing special.

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

Believe it or not Jackson9, a few years ago I sold the UK 12" of It shoulda been you/God don't like. Because it was short (4 something) I asumed at the time it was just the LP version and I also did not particularly like 'God dont like'.
.........Now of course I do like that track, and until you just said did not know that it was extended from the LP version! Shows how we learn from each other huh, thus I shall now re-buy that 12".

lol.. i'm glad we have helped each other.. us GG fans gotta stick together now

this is the one i have.

Gwen Guthrie - It Should Have Been You

It Should Have Been You here is also slightly different to the album version. it has a different and longer instrumental break down mid-song.

Yes I do remember now but because I had already sold it I could not compare again. a while ago in a fit of frenzy when I realised I had more records than space, I weeded anything that seemed like duplication (LP versions on 12" etc..) Obviously I made some mistakes so won't be doing that again! Shall re-buy forthwith.

    Re: Gwen Guthrie Remix

Jackson I have to honestly say that I have not seen any of these on CD and the likelyhood of some of them especially the edits seems zilch, good luck with your quest however as you never know especially with some of the more obscure releases that you find in some European countries.

i recently got this Sly & Robbie Hopscotch mix - Zef - you are right. this mix is a blast and slightly better! then the Levan version. i also tracked down the 8 min+ of Dance Fever.. pure dynamite.. i swear Gwen's vocals sound almost Quadraphonic in parts.. wonder if it was specially mastered/pressed like that?

Cool I'm glad you agree with me on the Hopscotch mixes. I've actually been playing Larrys instrumental, with no Gwen I know but chugs along nicely in it's own right. I'm guessing that the sounds on Dance fever have been mixed that way.
I gave in and got the Portrait CD from Masterpiece. I think the quality is much better than their version of the first LP, so I'm glad I did. I have them all on CD now except the Padlock which I've noticed has got expensive again. managed to get for you quite cheap from an ebay seller. I also found a nice vinyl re-press of the East coast LP that she sings on. I must now get around to doing that compo of the 12"s, also in the process of planning a re-edit of family affair.
Funny how this has turned into a two man thread!
