    Herbie Mann's "Superman"

Just heard "Superman" this weekend by Herbie Mann. Kinda cheesey but not really bad. Just curious, was it a hit at the clubs? Did it come out when Superman The Movie was released in theaters?

I personally don't remember it doing any real business, but others might. Can't help with regards to the time frame, as it hardly registered on my DJ radar.:icon_redface:

Yes it came out to cash in on the movie . Remember it from then ... but only mildly.
It's one that I'd actually prefer not to hear again.

Contrived. Mundane . Horribly edited ... Starts off dreary and holds it there .... going on and on from one low point to the next ... The only reason for the flute laid prominently on top is because its Herbie Mann but even it sounds contrived and spiritless .
    No conviction in it.
And who wants to be on the dancefloor while the name " SUPERMAN " gets repeated over and over ???? .....
Maybe at Halloween ... if there were a lot of superhero costumes in the room .....

    Celi Bee
's version is only slightly better .....

    judge for yourself though ......

    Play

the 12" is well worth getting for the B side, "Etagui", which kicks arse in a very nice latin/jazz/disco fashion, but it needs to be pitched down a bit. OK, a lot!

It's pronounced "Eat A Guy" - an example of Patrick Adams' sense of humour!

Gotta find "eatagui". I'll check the album to see if it's on there and thanks Remicks for the audio. Still, not a bad tune.........

Etagui is indeed on the LP, another good tune from that LP is Django and I also think Jisco Dazz is another good Patrick production on there.

I like Herbie's version of Superman, even though it doesn't stray that much from the Celi Bee version:icon_smile: & even though I think the flute actually detracts from the song....

I can't say whether it got a lot of club play but speaking for myself, I LOVE the Herbie Mann/Patrick Adams version of Superman. Hell, the entire "Super Mann" album is one of my all time favourites.. Not a dull moment on that LP, if you ask me.

"Jisco Dazz" was the only track to really get a 12" remix AFAIK, but I actually prefer the LP version..

Aside from all the above, another one I love on the LP is "Stomp Your Feet"

    Here's what I hear :
an ultra high pitched girlie saying over and over :

Superman ... We love you Superman ....
Superman ... I need you Superman
    :icon_rolleyes:

    :icon_razz: :icon_razz: :icon_razz: :icon_razz: :icon_redface:

That storyline on top of a narrow unfaltering bass line ......

..... about as exciting as Clark Kent proofreading the obituaries!!

Gag me with some Kriptonite !! :icon_lol:

    I know I know ... to each his own !! :icon_cool:
It is part of what makes it all interesting is it not .... it's why some went to one club ....and others preferred another ....

    Re: Herbie Mann's "Superman"

My 2 cents : Superman by Herbie Mann was good and it actually broke the top 50.
It was shrewd tactics from Patrick Adams to make sure it came out before Meco's yearly version of a John Williams soundtrack. Meco barely broke the top 80.

Now Meco's version was far better than Mann's imho and the 9 min. cut (12-inch casablanca) is worth getting.

Of course it was a step down from 'Star Wars' and 'the Wizard of Oz' but still classic instrumental disco.

lol.. I kinda likes the sexy, girlie vocals :icon_razz: .. We love you Superman... Do it to them Superman!

Anyway, I'm coming at this after the fact.. This was the first version I heard. I haven't even heard the Meco version yet, so I'll admit my frame of reference is more narrow..

Guess what Neon ... that damn song has been floatin' around in my brain ...... so now I'm thinking I should seek out the LP to give the rest of it a chance ... on your high recommendation ....:icon_cool:......

as far as the Meco version, don't hold your breath .....I'd suggest there
wasn't a SUPERMAN disco song made worth getting excited over .........IMO

lol!.. I never knew I was that persuasive :icon_razz:

Well, IMO, even if you liked just some of Patrick Adams' other work, I'm sure you'd still enjoy something on the album.. Herbie's flute gives Patrick's sound an almost floating elegance on this one, I thought..

I consider this the "lost" Musique album. Stomp Your Feet To The Beat could easily have been included on the Keep On Jumpin' album. It's one of my favorite songs from that era. Sounds good with A-Freak-A by Lemon.

I simply can't choose between the two versions. They're both between my favos!

But I never see anyone mentioning this album. I never saw too many copies of it either but there's some great stuff on it too!
