What ever become of Dance Music Report?

    Hi,

Perhaps this has been asked before, but what ever became of Dance Music Report/DMR? I used to subscribe to it when I was a club and mobile DJ. Is there a web presence somewhere for the magazine, even as an archive as i suspect it is no longer published. I did not get any good hits when i googled.

    Thank you.

Dance Music Report originally started out as Disco News in the late 1970s. Tom Silverman of Tommy Boy Records was the publisher.

During the 1980s I bought DMR practically each week for the great reviews, articles and charts. Lost track of it around 1987-88, but I recall seeing it well into the 1990s. Don't know if it merged with another magazine or if it simply closed down.

Thank you Bernie. I would love to see some of the charts. I still have 1 or two copies floating around as well as a couple of the black tee-shirts from when i renewed my subscriptions. Hopefully someone knows of where it ended up and perhaps it might exist some day again on the web.

Here is a picture of one of the DMR T-shirts. Perhaps this can be added elsewhere on the site.

I went digging into some bins in my basement for old dance music magazines to try to find an answer about DMR. My copies are mostly from the early 90s (some 80s as well).

It looks like it was autumn '92 when the magazine started to show its troubles. The August 1992 issue (with Rozalla on the cover) was the last publication in its original form as a folded 8 1/2" x 11" booklet with full colour cover. The next issue, dated October 16 - 29, 1992 is in a tabloid format similar to newsprint (although a bit heavier paper), mostly black and white with one spot colour on the front page....Martha Wash's pic is on it. I guess the intention was to make it bi-weekly in an effort to keep up with the massive amount of dance releases. I don't have another issue after this one....maybe there was one or two after (???)

During this same time, I started receiving Remix Service Authority....a simple black and white magazine devoted to remix service reviews (Hot Tracks, Ultimix, etc). A few months later, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find in my mailbox was the March 1993 edition with the name Dance Music Authority as well as Remix Service Authority (later known as DMA). The publisher of the magazine was Gary Hayslett who had been one of DMR's contributing writers. Gary basically began where DMR left off. In this first edition, he writes "the recent demise of DMR (Dance Music Report) has left an incredible void in dance music media coverage. Accordingly, in this issue, we introduce several exciting changes for what we hope will help fill this void in American dance music news and information."

And it certainly did fill that void!

There was the magazine DMA through the 90's and into early 2000's.

I liked the magazine a lot. Easy to read articles of equipment and had charts for club and mobile dj's.

I have a couple boxes of them in the closet.

They went out of business after 9/11. I had direct contact with them through e-mail at the time, because I questioned their disappearance. They were already struggling when 9/11 happened. A few mags went under at that time.

Thank you for the info. After a quick Google, i found the following regarding Dance Music Authority.

It looks like there might be a new website to be launched sometime soon called Dance Music International.

Hopefully it will launch soon and be a useful site to visit.:icon_cool:

Contrary to the Wikipedia write-up, DMA was a monthly publication. It went bi-monthly starting with the September/October 2001 edition. My last issue seems to be July/August 2002.

Not sure you want to, but perhaps you might consider updating the wikipedia entry to clarify if you have the time.

Would it be possible for you to post a picture of the last cover of DMR? It would go well with the T-shirt pic.

Wow, though most of this stuff is up to date modern, it reminds me of the disco days circa the new mellinieum. The pizza joint ad pic with the girl biting the apple is hot. Would make a great album cover.

I've never been too sure of how to scan photos and attach them to messages but I think I finally figured out how....here's what I think was the last issue.

Re: What ever become of Dance Music Report?

Is there any chance anyone would be interested in exchanging old issues of DMR, Remix Service Authority or DMA magazine in PDF (or jpg/png) form? I've got a number of DMA issues and a handful of Dance Music Report. I've never scanned a document into PDF, but willing to try as I am very interested in reading/collecting back issues of all these publications, it would be awesome to look back on this past. Dave

I've checked this link several times and there doesn't seem to be anything happening with this mag. Anyone heard any info of late?

Ooooo-eeee! I read somewhere that Dance Music Authority was being revived and looky-look!

    MySpace.com - DMA Dance - Tinley Park, US - Club / House / Trance - www.myspace.com/dmadance

There are names that I recognize involved with the site so this could be the start to something great again. I feel the dance community needs that central source of information to let us know what's out there. Let's wish them all the best!

Who knows....maybe they can eventually offer an archive of past issues.

I have the issues from 1986 through 1990....let me know what charts you're looking for and I'll see if I can scan them and get them posted.

Just removed some posts that are simply advertising their own sites which is not allowed. If anyone has any charts or info to post, they can share with other members right here in this thread by using the attachment feature.

    Sorry about that Bernie.

I posted my link because it will eventually be at least 280 charts as attachments.

Is it ok to start a separate thread with the images of the charts?

Yes, contributing to the community by sharing your knowledge or items "within posts" here on the forums instead of plugging your site is the idea here. Thanks for understanding and we look forward to your posts and insight.
