    hello skywalker,

i humbly suggest that you start with RadioioDisco, my 24-hour, seven-days-a-week internet disco station that features a different hand-picked playlist each day. from 1972 to 1982 you'll hear every shade of the disco rainbow.

check it out at www.radioiodisco.com or in the 70s/80s pop section of iTunes.

    thanks!

    Re: Disco internet radio

Internet radio is definitely on the increase interms of listeners. I wonder how many are regular listeners and how many just drop in, trawling through dozens a day? That would be interesting to know.

For myself, I find internet radio ultimately lacks something. The ones with jocks tend to sound amateurish and the non-stop toon after toon types end up like so much audio wallpaper.

The best ones are those that give current listeners some control over the playlist by suggesting maybe half a dozen titles and asking listeners to submit their choice for next track. This works well if a load of people are on-line and especially well if you're one of only a few bothering to vote.:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

The proposed higher copyright fees might not be such a bad idea. It might encourage more professionalism and generally up the standard of delivery. Just a thought.

    Re: Disco internet radio

I am especially interested in disco internet stations where current listeners can select which specific tracks from the database they wish to hear next.

This was how The Disco Heat operated and it was wonderful.

Are there any internet disco stations like The Disco Heat that use this programming method?

DVDjamm - You can listen to RadioDisco via iTunes and via the radioioDisco. your world. your station. no boundaries. website (click on the big red button at the upper left side marked "Ready to listen" then click on Free Listening). I prefer the website because if you access via Windows Media, you can rate the song! :icon_biggrin:

Very good 12" mixes featured there, of tracks I thought hardly anybody knew about! I tune in once in awhile, and often write down tracks to get the 12" of... And although tastes differ, being very picky music-wise, I can say I very seldom hear what I consider "crap" tracks, often abused elsewhere..

The system is operational, in case you're still facing trouble.

Diva Disco radio is a superstation, I never get bored when I tune in. So is Barry's Discoioio and 'was' Discoheat. But I always wonder how they manage to finance it all, since I don't hear much publicity and IMO the audience is not that big (I fear that's the difficulty when you are only broadcasting on the net).

I also dig starpointradio, retroruss and many others. I only wish I could listen to 'em a little more (f.i. when I'm on the road)

    "RadioioDisco" - Videoskooter. Yes, it's a mouthful!! :icon_lol:

I know one of Barry's concerns is letting people know about his station. It's up to those of us who love the station to spread the word!!! I know I've told all of my friends. Sometimes word of mouth can do wonders.

    Re: Disco internet radio

Skywalker - you can always catch my show on a Saturday night on Jazz Syndicate Radio (shameless plug!) - and as others have mentioed there are plenty of other people playing Disco around on the net & like Johann do find myself drawn to Diva Radio.

Broadening the debate somewhat and taking on board Quinny's comments I feel that Internet Radio is a hugely underdeveloped entertainment channel. The challenge is increasing listeners, and generating revenue through advertising and take it away from a 'hobbyist' approach to something more professional but without losing the charm that the shows do create.

In the UK 3G wireless networks will ultimately allow people to 'tune in' to any Internet radio station through their mobile phones but then there are copyright challenges and performing rights issues (there is a huge debate going on in the US about this at the moment). I could go on about this for ages but will wait for another more appropriate post!

Oops, sorry Barry :icon_lol: ,but admit, Discoioio sounds good as well!

Like Headlamp mentions, the 3G networks could be an interesting tool for it. It's not fully operational in Belgium yet but it will start soon!

Barry, are there already plans to use extra broadcasting tools?

    hey videoskooter,

it does say this on each Radioio station home page:

help us test our new portal! put this url into your smart phone or pocket PC device:

    http://radioio.com/io2go

high speed data transmission required, and a smart phone. don't have one? try one of these:
    » sprint wireless
    » cingular wireless
    » verizon wireless
    » treo 650

because i work out of my home, there's little need for me to have a mobile phone, so i haven't personally tried it. but if you have one of those new devices that plays iTunes radio away from your computer, you can hear my station that way by looking for it in the 70s/80s pop section.

    thanks again for your support,

    barry walters of www.radioiodisco.com

ps videoskooter, i miss your amazing, peculiar, and always entertaining youtube links! have you unearthed any worthwhile disco vids lately or have the nasty USA corporations made that impossible?

I have a Treo and purchased the Pocket Tunes software, ($40) and with a decent stereo headset, find it no different than listening to an ipod.
Though other than Barry's show, I don't know if any other disco oriented stations are taking advantage of this option. My only gripe with it is the inability to receive phone calls or even a notification of incoming calls while using it. But it does make listening to music very convenient in a pinch!

Hi Barry, glad you like 'em! Yes, it's starting to get tricky. The people that post the rare vids are frequently axed now. So the big companies and many television corporations are getting very strict.

I can try to open a new topic and post some but it would be sad if the link would be already dead a few hours later (it happened many times). I'll see what I can do.

Thx for the info on the new techniques for radioiodisco!

Hi Qdearl, I'll check that Treo out! Thx for the tip!

    Re: Disco internet radio

My main concern with internet radio is that by offering so much choice, they're actually likely to decrease the overall effect they could have.

The whole world of music has become 'fractioned' over the past 15 years. That is, it's no longer able to generate mass acceptance of any artists and everything has a relatively limited (in size/revenue) potential, compared to say 30 years ago. By offering 'cool' disco tracks, you're more likely to play to 'cool' disco track freaks than anyone else. In other words the value of the tracks in question tend to be to an incredibly limited audience and you ain't gonna get many 'converts' in a hurry, because the music played is viewed as too specialised. People soon tire of hearing the same thing over and over and therefore in a very short time you end up with the music being just so much audio wallpaper and/or a commodity, even to those few 'cool' music freaks you origianally appealed to. This is particularly true of those stations that just play the music. By focusing on just one type of music they're possibly giving more people a good enough reason NOT to tune into them, than to those that would. Maybe they're working on the assumption that any one person will tune in for say an hour before they get fed up with the same format...all the time, so that their listening figures end up looking relatively healthy. They're broadcasting, but in a very limited way with very little opportunity of creating a two way thing between listener and station. Radio works because it allows people to interact and dream a little.

Also, to keep on air they need to generate income and they'll be forever wanting the listener to pay for the experience directly in some manner. They can't survive on fresh air!! SO, if people won't donate, how do they achieve it? Adverts (defeats the object), tune-a-thons, payment for requests at specific times or specific number of times during any one 24 hour period? How??? The internet being what it is, they cannot just rely on peoples' good faith to donate money. People need more of a 'club' experience to do that. An experience, an atmosphere that makes them feel like they have some sort of ownership, belonging, whatever.

There's a lot more thinking required, IMO.

FYI: I've been listening to Diva Funk Radio whilst typing this and bro' does it suck (for me). The stream is forever stopping and starting (even though I have broadband), poor edits between tracks, jumps within tracks, no tracks that I can identify on my own etc. Sound quality is pretty good, but for the life of me I couldn't see any obvious way of making this less good and maybe making the delivery of the stream more solid. All in all I've found it to be less than stimulating and wouldn't bother again. If my experience is even slightly typical, they're losing, aren't they?

    Just my 2 cents worth.

That's weird, I tune in regularly and I don't have that kinda problem. Like you said, excellent sound quality but here the music flows without a problem!

Maybe it was their server having an off day! I know there's people from Divaradio around here so can they comment on the (possible) problem?

    Barry,

Thanks for posting the URL to radiodisco. I have enjoyed it and it is great to hear some of the songs that i have not heard in years (and do not have copies of).
