Grrr - just look at all those Nightmare placings! As if![]()
O god I love Carolyn Harding's 'Movin On'; I s'pose it's early house/garage really but I won't hold that against it!It was when house still had proper songs & was just updated disco really. I rushed out to get this 12" as soon as I heard it!
...ya gotta beat the street......
So was this the type of chart that led to Record Mirror dropping the Hi-NRG chart? I.E. It was allegedly rigged to highlight a certain label/producer's work?
I think it "got scrapped" at some point in 1988..I recall james Hamilton saying something like.."Unfortunately we have had to cancel the weekly HI-NRG chart due to rigging of certain chart placings..Sorry to our readers but to be honest this chart did not really mean much anyway"..
Its a pity it did get scrapped as it did have its uses when it came to tracking down new releases.
I've got the exact record mirror in front of me right now, and you can see what James Hamilton was talking about !!!!.
More or less every week you would see 2,3 maybe even 4 Nightmare Records(as an example !!!) tracks in the top ten.
In my opinion this was never a true example of a nationwide Hi-NRG chart, even though it was a great guideline to what was happening at the time.
Does anyone think there could of been a better way of publishing a "truer" chart ?.
You couldn't do it by sales alone that's for sure, so I suppose DJ playlist returns were the only way, but as we all know Mr Levine had a hand it in somewhere - killing off the hi-nrg chart by his own over-promotion![]()
I used to buy loads of record but always made a point to purchase each n every track which reached number one (ended up with a few bloopers imho, as I've never liked EG Daily - Love In The Shadows, or Bertrice Reading's You're Gonna Suffer), but once every Nightmare tune seemed to peak at the top, regardless of quality............I gave up.
