People outside of the U.K may or may not know who i'm referring to,but does anyone remember a dj who used to be on a radio station in Manchester,England 'Piccadilly Key 103' called Stu Allan?
He had a show on a saturday and sunday night which started in about 1989(ish) :D and finished about 1997(ish)! :evil:
The sat night show ran for about 4 hours playing all the latest (at the time) club/dance tunes that put you in the mood for a Saturday night out and the Sunday night show ran from 7-10pm playing pretty much the same as the sat night show, but each of the 3 hours was devoted to a different style of dance music. Hour 2; 8-9pm was devoted to hardcore techno and jungle music with a 40 minute 'mastermix' 8.20 - 9 pm, which started off with jungle music and then mixed into banging techno hardcore music (fantastic!),were as the final hour, 9-10pm was devoted to house/soulful house music,or as it was called, the 'none hardcore hour', also with a fab 40 minute 'mastermix' 9.20-10pm!
The title of the Sunday night show would differ depending on what year it was-for example,if it was 1993 the show would be called 'Move 93' - if it was 1994 the show would be called 'Move 94' and so on...........
When his show first started back around 1989 the rave scene in the U.K was massive and the mixes he used to do on his show or 'mastermixes' were fantastic!
By the time his show had finished around 1997(ish) the rave scene had all but gone and house/garage/ & drum & bass music had all but took over but none the less the 'mastermixes' on his show were still brilliant!
He was in my opinion one off the most talented dj's of that era and i am not exaggerating when i say that i listened to his Sunday night show every week (and occasionally, if i was'nt out, the sat night show), and taped the whole of the 3 hour show!
I would normally be in on a Sunday night anyway, in my bedroom sorting out uniform/any homework for high school the next day and all you would ever see in my music system on a Sunday night would be the wheels of the cassettes going round & round constantly for 3 hours (good old days!)
It's a case these days of were is he now?????
Since his 'Key 103' radio show finished, not much has been heard of him since! which really is a damn shame, because in my eyes he was/always will be, a dj God and he was the ultimate soundtrack to my teenage/school/early clubbing years!

I am just a very appreciative/grateful fan of his because i listened/enjoyed his show so much throughout my teenage years!

:D excellent memories of his shows, but i'm sure i used to listen to him from1987 ish. He used to have a hip-hop hour (i think) which may have been called bus-dis.
around the late eighties and early ninties does anyone remember the isometric dance show on sunset 102fm? used to play and excellent mix of music from all the dance genres, happy memories. This was a time when the clubs and dj's seemed to be so much more accessible. :lol:

park hall, chorley, thursday night for euro house etc
hacienda, soooo many nights to mention, including nude, shiva etc
kool kat, nottingham. used to trek from manchester to this one

Yes I definitely remember Stu Allen. He was the man who introduced me to house music in his 4 hour long sunday night shows on Piccadilly Radio around 1987.
Starting with Soul around 10 pm (show was called "souled out" if I remember well) then moving on to hiphop ("buss diss") his sessions finished off with a final hour of chicago house from 1 to 2 am. It was always hard for me to get up for school on Monday mornings.
Still have tapes dating back from that era, full of acts like Raze, Rhythm is Rhythm, Tony Slammin' Sinetti, T Coy, Susan (girls can jack too), Libra Libra, Crush ...
I left the UK at that time so I never got to experience the hacienda nor the rave scene, but Stu Allen definitely put me on the right tracks. You can find a pic of his on the "memories" section of the North West radio website.

I'm trying to track down Stu myself, he was releasing pop/dance tracks as Clock throughout the 90's but I haven't heard what he's been up to for a few years.
Stu was a regular at my club nights and an avid listener of my mixes for Piccadilly Radio in Manchester during 82/83 and, following on from Chad Jackson and Mike Shaft, continued the tradition of best of the year mixes for the station, which I'd begun.
Stu has never received the due respect for his role in the Manchester Rave explosion. He was undoubtedly a huge influence to lots of people via his radio show (as this thread illustrates).
Any info about his whereabouts would be appreciated.

I'll attempt to clear some of this up.
Stu Allan and Chris Buckley presented "The All-Night Beat" on Piccadilly which was on for 5 hours from 1am to 6am on Saturday night/Sunday morning. It started in 1986. I missed the first handful of shows, but the first time I heard it I was hooked, and taped every show for the next couple of years (I still have the tapes). I remember one of the big songs they were always playing when I first started to listen was BB&Q's "Dreamer". This was a pretty radical show at the time - there weren't many shows playing that kind of dance music, certainly not for 5 hours! I actually used to write in a lot with requests, and had many of them played. (I remember three in particular that I asked for: Rosalind Joyce's "Friends Not Lovers", Cherrelle's "When You Look In My Eyes", and the long version of Rochelle Fleming's "I Know Just What You're After".)
My favourite segment on "The All-Night Beat" was a half-hour mix of "Oldies" that got played at 5am - they played some fantastic late 70s/early 80s stuff in this segment.
I seem to remember the show being shortened by an hour sometime in 87 - it then finished at 5am presumably so Stu, Chris (and the rest of us) could get some more sleep.
On Sunday evenings, from 10pm to 2am, Stu presented "Souled Out", which, as previously stated, was themed into soul/dance, hip-hop, and house. I think there were two hours of soul and dance, followed by an hour of hip-hop, and finally an hour of house. At one time the program had different names for the sections, hence the use of "Bus-Dis" for the hip-hop hour. The wonderful thing about the hip-hop and house hours (and a lot of the soul/dance section from what I can remember) is that they were hour-long continuous mixes - amazing stuff. Stu used to pick out the best new hip-hop and house releases each week and string them into fabulous mixes. I still have about three years' worth of Souled Out on tapes too.
Between 86 and approximately 89 these two radio shows were like a religion to me. In 1990 I moved to Hull, and I sorely missed these shows. As others have pointed out, at this time things had changed, and there was "The Isometric Dance Class". Stu himself started to present a fairly long show early on Saturday evenings - can't remember what it was called. I listened to it when I was back occasionally in the Manchester area.
Chris Buckley had moved to London last time I heard (a year or more ago). He was with a radio station but seemed to have moved into an executive position rather than being a DJ.
Not much about Stu on the net, but the most recent thing I found was that he performed an Old Skool (hate the name) set at Fantasy Island near Skegness on New Year's Eve.

Stu contacted me. He's in fine form, living near Manchester and still getting lots of club bookings. Of particular interest to people here is that Stu is doing a weekly radio show, which goes out every Saturday on Reading 107, called 'Back To My Roots', where he features Dance music from the mid-70's to mid-80's period. Unfortunately the show isn't going out on the internet at present, but hopefully this will change in the not too distant future.
I've told him about discomusic.com, and the good vibes he's been receiving in this thread.

Does anyone have any old playlists of his Buss-Dis shows 87/88ish, or even just remember a few odd tracks?
Most of my old Buss-Dis tapes have perished and all I'm left with is a few tunes in my brain!

Stu allan is a dance music eductional god and unsung hero. I listened to the key 103 show and taped almost every one between 1987 and 1997 at the rate of about 3 or 4 tapes a month (mainly floorfillers hour and the hardcore house hour). The music was fantastic and the memories they caused will always be there.
All my tapes are still mint and I am transferring to CD one by one. Between Jan 93 and Sept 93 my collection is a bit patchy as I lost a few to my nightmare ex girlfriend. :icon_rolleyes: 10 Years on and I'm still sick and can only find Fantazia tapes which ain't the same as my Key 103 tapes were.:icon_sad:

Hi Everyone,
I have a lot of the tapes of stu allens mixes from 90's. I only mainly recorded the dance hour & all mixes are unedited, recorded on top quality tapes, on a top quality tape recorder, dolby C/HX pro so minimal hiss/noise. Quite a lot i've now converted to mp3 sampled at maximum bit rate so high resolution.
Does anyone have any Piccadilly Radio (Key 103) mixes of Chad Jackson, 1983, 1985, 1985 etc? I had all of them on cassette at one on high quality recordings but lost them when i borrowed them out & didn't see them again.

Hi everybody I'm new to this thread, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only Disco-Hi-Nrg Nut in this world.
About Stu Allan, As a Dj Myself playing UK Hardcore, He's been releasing alot of stuff over the last year on UK Trance/Hard-Dance label NUKLEUZ under the name Stu Allan or VISA. He's actually getting more popular with more releases. You can tell the 80's influences in the vocals used in his HARDCORE TRACKS.
He's also appeared on a CD Compilation called HARDCORE NATION which is now upto Volume 3 which was only released a couple of months ago.
This guy is a master when it comes to good Vocal Hardcore & for people like me who remember the Hi-NRG stuff from the 80's, UK Hardcore is by far the closest descendant to Vocal Hi-NRG Disco of all the current dance genres, & at the right TEMPO (actually faster BPM'S (170 + ).

stu allen played my friends night at the worx preston at end of september alongside dj absolute and ben fisher he still has wot made him a good dj but much happier to say he no longer has the shady following that he did in the early nineties
I think stu allen was also one of the people responsible for bringing underground dance music to the mainstream in the uk with his key 103 old skool show on sundays. I have also had the pleasure of booking mr allen to play loveshack in blackpool in early ninties and am the proud owner of the only copies of his set that night
Personally though i always felt he was more at home in hardcore than old skool house

Wow! I'm well impressed with this thread, I thought I was the only person who used to record all his shows on KEY 103. I used to start recording the floor fillers from about 94 then stick another tape in for the requests show and another for the hard house (never a fan of break beat and jungle though). I've still got a few of my tapes, one in particular has all 3 of my requests back to back on it, one of which he passes a message on to a girl that I fancied....... 11 years later and we are happily married with children (I don't think Stu can take the credit for that though ;-).
I had no idea that he started out so early, I thought he was a strictly house and dance man. I only saw him live once at The Roxy in Bury on Boxing day about 96 and I managed to pull a fit bird because I said I worked with Stu (she believed me purely because we sound the same when we speak, that and the fact that she was hammered probably helped).
Addition: There was one particular tune that he used to play in the hard house mix almost every week for a year which was fanflippintastic but all I can remember is one of the lines which went "Only if I had one more tryna keep the rhythm from a rippin down the door...."
I know it's a long shot asking people to remember a song from one line played by a regional DJ on an obscure show 12 years ago, but I reckon you can do it. Ta

I remember writing in to Stu Allan asking him what this fantastic track he kept playing was as he didn't ID it himself.
He actually wrote back saying things would become clear soon, and it turned out the track was 'You Gave Me Love' by Clock, and that cowbell still drives me nuts!!
Any other DJ would have plugged their own track like mad, but he didn't(not until it was released anyway!).
Makes me wonder if that's why he hasn't been as respected as he should have been/should be, he's just too modest!
I'd love to go to a club and see him DJ, but i guess I'm too old and fat to get in the places he'd be playing!LOL
