Loleatta Holloway - I May Not Be There When You Want Me (But I'm Right On Time)

I recently got the CD reissue of her "Queen Of The Night" album and I've been rediscovering and listening to this glorious, criminally underrated Loleatta track for the last couple of days.. How much disco power could you pack into one track? I think I've found the answer..

Anyway, the CD reissue has a bonus mix of this track tacked on to the end. Entitled the "12'' Mix," it runs well over ten minutes.. Thing is, I can't seem to find any trace of this ten minute extended mix on vinyl anywhere. The closest that I've found was a promo 12'' which seems to run the same length as the album version. The CD booklet doesn't specify who mixed this version (though I'm guessing maybe Tom Moulton) or if/when it was released.. So I'm just wondering if anyone here actually knows anything about this mix, if they've ever come across it on vinyl or even remember it in any way from BITD..

    Thanks

The first I saw of this track was on a CD series released in the 90s of Salsoul 12" mixes on the Bethlehem label. I forgot the exact name of it, but it had the word 'gold' in the title. The description of 'I May Not Be There' on that CD was that the 10 minute mix was previously unreleased. I think the mix was done back in the day, because I've noticed mixes done with later equipment tend to sound less 'punchy' than mixes done in the 70s.

Here's a link to the CD on Amazon:

You're right ; I recently read about this elusive mix on some other VERY interesting board and I haven't been able to find anything about it either.

I remember the album version and the 7'36 12in version but this one still puzzles me.

I love to rediscover these classics tracks after all these years.

    Hugs

Thanks for the link and info, Disco Funk! That definitely explains it.. I guess that's why they couldn't denote it as 'previously unreleased' on the Unidisc reissue.. So far, I only have Vol. 1 of the Salsoul Gold Master Series but looks like there are some goodies on this volume!

Another board, you say?.. hee hee..

Greetings and hugs back to you in MTL

Yeah, I can't believe they skipped over this one BITD.. Although someone told me a few days ago that the instrumental was used on a promo for ABC in the US, so I suppose that might explain it.. Too bad for Loleatta though, her and Bunny Sigler were on fire on this one!

Oh.. and one more thing: a video!

YouTube - I May Not Be There When You Want Me - Loleatta Holloway

She's live and totally nails it IMO, except maybe for that little part where she flubs the lyrics :icon_lol: Can't believe I didn't find this earlier..

That youtube video was ripped from the Unidisc DVD Salsoul Classics release. It's a DVD worth getting. It also contains rare performances by Bunny Sigler (Let Me Party With You), Love Committee (Law & Order) and that promo of Charo on the Las Vegas strip doing Dance A Little Closer. The audio for all of the performances is sync'd from the studio recordings with the exception of the 'I May Not Be There' performance above.

Well, we solved the mystery of the 10 minute mix of that track on the Unidisc CD. I still haven't been able to find out about the Bunny Sigler CD with all those remixes of 'By The Way You Dance'. There are 4 mixes, 1 is the LP, 1 is the original 12", and then there are 2 more mixes that I haven't been able to find any info on. Those 2 mixes were done back in the day, not something done recently.

Sorry for my delayed reply on this one.. That DVD release sounds like another something for my shopping list.. I love that Charo video, as canned and primitive as it is hehe..

I haven't gotten any of the Bunny Sigler CDs either.. "By The Way You Dance" was one of my faves on the Larry Levan Paradise Garage mix CD, those extra mixes sound intriguing to say the least..

remicks: Yeah the lyrics are a little unclear on the video, the studio version makes it a whole lot clearer, especially with her little 'rap'/ad-lib.. Anyway, for me it's all about Miss Loleatta telling her man to quit whining about her tardiness: "you must expect a girl to be late, when you come over for a date.. we keep you waiting! waiting! waiting!.. you see it takes me a lot of time to put on my make up, come down, kiss you so tenderly.. say it pretty daddy, don't be mad at me.. I may not be there when you want me.." etc.. etc.. Anyway, she completely misses some of these lines in the video

All I can say is WOW! I do know that the title of that song was taken from a gospel song called, "He may not be there when you want him, but he's right on time (God).

First time I've seen Loleatta Holloway performing. She reminds me of Chaka Kahn a little bit, and looks like her somewhat (from the same tribe?).

I'm African American so cool it y'all; not trying to be racist.

Anyway, great video; I also checked out the "hit and run" video, which was good, but you can tell she was lip synching; I guess by that time she couldn't hit those high notes; hit and run was produced when Loleatta first came on the disco scene and she was more fresh then.

    Great stuff.

Cousins? They both can wail like a Stork in heat, and have tremendous cleavage. Could be.
