named Diamanda Galas? I'd read about her for years and finally decided to take a chance and buy one of her recordings (I bought "The Sporting Life", her collaboration with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. Yes, I now know it was released in 1994 but I'm just getting it so give me a break.) I felt my blood pressure rise when I first listened to this record...talk about original music. The music is dense, bass heavy and rock-ish, but it's the vocals that really stand out. Her singing voice is often a dead ringer for Grace Jones', but her singing is only half the story. She also screams and shreiks...it at first reminded me of either Yoko Ono, someone scaping their fingernails on a blackboard, or someone backing a car over a cat. I'll bet this is why I've never seen or heard her on any music t.v. show (she may indeed have been on some, I've just never heard or seen her) but in the context of the often agressive music here, the shreiks "fit." I'm sure it would be sheer noise to some people (probably most people), too abrasive for many, but this is the most original sounding record I've heard in years. If you're in an experimental mood and want to take a chance on some challenging music you may want to give this a try...I found it in the "goth/industrial" section of my local store, which tells you a lot.
