Today, I've taken delivery of Mastercuts 80's Groove MCUTCD18 and I really don't know what to make of it. BTW: the tracklist on this link is not correct, unless I've got hold of a pre-release copy. There's 10 tracks on each CD, not 11.

Quite a few of the tracks are really, really well known, tired "oh jeez not again" tracks, but many I've never heard of. Search the web and virtually nothing about most of 'em. Go to GEMM....no listings for 'em and yet they're nearly all terrifically strong numbers, albeit in a range of genres.
The CD is let down by poor production values in places (like one track is a needle drop and you hear about 5 seconds of rumble, scratches and hiss before the track finally starts) and the fact that it's such a mish mash of styles and genres and yet I keep on coming back to the fact that sooo many tracks are really strong.
I'm gobsmacked and bewildered at the same time.
Have to admit I too know few of these...I AM A 70'S guy tho'.,not really into 80's 'music'....:icon_lol:
To make things even stranger i have 2 volumes of 80's mastercuts on vinyl and none of those tracks are on them.
Therefore, the question begs...Which 'master' chose these 'cuts' ?
A master baker, or bater ?????:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
BTW ..Quinny LOOKS gobsmacked anyway .......:icon_sad:
What the F**K!!! This ain't no beauty contest dahling. Where's your photo?:icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
Mastercuts is mastercuts only in name. It's gone through one hell of a metamorphosis since its heyday.
I've listened more closely to the 'unknown' tracks and many of them sound like they may have been made yesterday, BUT in the credits they all have published 1981/1983 etc and the name of totally unknown (to me and the internet) record companies or music companies.
This is a truly odd release, but I'm liking a lot of what I hear. The tracks have a certain something, if only momentarily. I'm, gonna toss and turn in bed tonight wondering about this release. Maybe it's another Roadblock!!!
Q, with THOSE bins, I would do more Turnin' than Tossin :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
PEACE...Q IS A GENIUS, AND SO DRY !!!!!

Mastercuts lost its soul when Ian Dewhirst, whose brainchild it was, left the company in 1994. They continued to release some good compilations, but lost track of Ian's original intention. Rather than being the definative type albums that truly reflected the music scenes they were highlighting in a historical sense, they became compilations of DJ's favourite tunes (the Funk series is a good case in point).
Apart from the name, the more recent Mastercuts releases have little in common with the original series - hence Quinny's comments about the patchy tracklisting.
Greg, good to hear from u....hope everything is going OK ?
Believe U have been abroad ?....and what about the NEXT GW release ???:icon_lol: :icon_lol:
