Any input about this LP ???
When was it released ?
Was this used as Soul Train's original theme before MFSB ?? ?

Yup. Soul Train started in '71 or '72. The Rimshots track was the show's theme until '73 or so when the MFSB track took over.
The Soul Train LP was put out in '72, I believe. I prefer their later work, like the singles 'It's A Monster' and 'We Got You Singing', and the Down To Earth LP.

I have had this item in my wish list for a few months now. I just ordered the CD below yesterday out of curiosity. By name, I have never heard of the group but once I hear some of the songs, I may be familiar with them.
The reviewer says that this is a compilation of The Rimshots featuring work from the Down To Earth LP & 9 tracks from the Soul Train album. 22 trks in all. I hope that it is as funky as the reviewer made it sound.![]()

Actually, the original version was by a group called Blue Mink, but it wasn't done as a disco song at the time, and it was called 'Get Up'. You can probably hear a song sample on allmusic of that original.
Gary Toms Empire reworked it into the disco anthem, which I believe was released in '75. The Rimshots cover was done in '76. The Rimshots also did a cover of Dance Girl, a great dancefloor track that the Fatback Band did a year earlier. If you like the Rimshots track, which sounds almost exactly like the Fatback one, check out the Fatback version. I think it's on one of those Perception years collections of theirs.
If you like the Rimshots sound, then you have to check out other stuff on the Vibration, All Platinum, etc... labels run by Sylvia Robinson. They were the house band, along with Wood Brass & Steel. They on singles by Hank Ballard, Chuck Jackson, and Brook Benton. They are the guys playing on The First Class LP Going First Class (that album is HIGHLY recommended for its danceability factor); and they played on Sylvia's Pussycat single and her Lay It On Me LP (well they, and Wood Brass & Steel, played on that LP). And it's them on Girls by The Whatnauts & The Moments.

Sorry for the painfully obvious delay in response :icon_eek: but I would say yes it was a great purchase. I admit that I expected something different as I had known nothing of the group except for reading reviews and hearing recommendations. Groove Bus, Walter's Inspiration, Neighbor Get Your Own & Harvey Wallbanger are among my favorite cuts.
As much as I like "Neighbor Get Your Own", I felt that the compilation version was butchered due to the loud and abrupt intro. Still, There were lots of good moments throughout the disc making it a great find.
Maybe I'll be blessed with the opportunity to be able to hear the original vinyl in it's intended entirety someday......I haven't come across neither one of the albums in my endeavors and it's been over a year since I bought the compilation.![]()

The Rimshots were the house band for the Sylvia Robinson labels, so if you like their funky disco sound, check out other records that they played backing on. Tracks like Lay It On Me by Sylvia, Me & My Gemini by First Class (actually the whole album is worth getting), Lets Go Skinny Dipping by Hank Ballard, and there are a number of others. You can find some of the tracks on various Stang/All Platinum label compilations.

Sure, no problem Remicks.
Here's First Class 'Me & My Gemini'. The album this comes from 'Going First Class' features some great slide steel guitar. I think the liner notes mention that it's some outside guy playing it, not one of the Rimshots playing.
Here's a slight remix of Lay It On Me by Sylvia (the 45 B side is an instrumental mix, by the way):

I should have mentioned in my reply that there are repressing floating around of the Down To Earth LP, so if your looking for an original, be weary of those 'New' copies.

now on youtube:
The Rimshots SOULTRAIN
add in for good measure :
The Rimshots SUPERDISCO
Boy you listen to this original theme for Soul Train with its clear 60's derivative of "soul" music ... and then consider its replacement by MFSB... could it be any more demonstrative that for the dance scene ....
a change gonna come ...![]()
