    tribute songs to singers

which singer has the most number of tribute songs that mention them by name? So far I've only come up with "When Smokey Sings" by ABC and "Pure Smokey" by George Harrison, but there must be lots of others.....

Do they need to bear reference in the title? Or just in the song?

From the top of my head,

-"Ella, elle l'a" by France Gall (Ella Fitzgerald)

-"Nightshift" by the Commodores (Marvin Gaye & Jackie Wilson)

    -"Tribute" by the Pasadenas (Little Richard,Elvis Presley,Sam Cooke,Jackie Wilson,Otis Redding,James Brown,Marvin Gaye,Stevie Wonder,Smokey Robinson,The Supremes, Ike & Tina Turner,Aretha Franklin,Jimmy Hendrix, The Jacksons)

-"Let the Bells Ring" by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (Johnny Cash)

Spandau Ballet's 'True' has the line 'listening to Marvin all night long' & then there's Teena Marie's 'My Dear Mr.Gaye' so that's 2 that i can think of straight away that pay tribute to Marvin Gaye.

I'd forgotton about Teena's "My Dear". That lady can REALLY wail a song. Have you heard "Naked to the World"? "It Must Be Magic", "Casanova Brown"?

I was thinking about songs that mentioned the singer in the titile of the song, like Scritti Politti's "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)". There's TONS of songs that list singers in the lyrics but not in the titles. One of my favorites is Fleetwood Mac's "Silver Heels" ("If I could sing like Paul McCartney, or get funky like Etta James, I'd never change my silver heeled ways!"

George Jackson -"Aretha, Sing One For Me" Hi Records 72'
Joe Tex "Your'e Right Ray Charles"
Fun Lovin' Criminals - "Love Unlimited" (Barry White saved my life)

    Re: tribute songs to singers

this goes back to around 1968...SWEET SOUL MUSIC by Arthur Conley...

'Do you like good music? (yeah, yeah) that sweet soul music (yeah, yeah)..."

pays tribute to James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Lou Rawls + more I can't recall in my head!!! :icon_question:

    gawd bless the Google...

...the pair began tinkering with the original song, creating what would ultimately become "Sweet Soul Music." An electrifying tribute to the Southern soul idiom that name-checked icons including James Brown, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, and -- at Conley's insistence -- Redding himself, the resulting single (Conley's debut for new label Atco) proved a massive hit, reaching number two on both the Billboard pop and R&B charts while reaching the Top Ten across much of Europe.

then there's the Righteous Brothers...ROCK & ROLL HEAVEN...
"...if there's a Rock & roll heaven...you know they've got one helluva band..."

namechecks (first name--only...how la di dah)... Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, Bobby Darin

    and then there's AMERICAN PIE...

refers to the Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly.... Without actually mentioning their names.

Love love love the Lady T! I've got quite a few discs of hers but my favourite will always be 'I Need Your Lovin' from 'Irons In The Fire'.
