Was there some never released Philly styled material recorded by Jermaine Jackson???

Tom Moulton mentions a Norman Harris produced album in his
September 4, 1976 column :

No release date has been set for Jermaine Jackson's LP titled "Do Unto Others," which was also produced by the Harris Machine. Most New York deejays are aware of this strong album just by word of mouth.

I can't find any further reference of this 1976 project ??? Anyone ?

ooh.. I remember now hearing on some other forums about an unreleased Jermaine Jackson album from this time. According to the BSN Motown discography, this is it..

So far, I'd have to say Norman Harris is one of my favourite producers to come out of Philly, so there's got to be something good on it.. I just wonder what would've kept this album from being released, especially considering the good buzz mentioned in Tom Moulton's column.

EDIT: I just found out about a previously unreleased track by Jermaine called "Good For The Gander" on the "Spirit Of Philadelphia" compilation.. I'm guessing that track must have been culled from these sessions..

Good For The Gander is an awesome track. I've always wondered how the people who made Spirit of Philadelphia got their hands on this cut because their source material sounds a lot like cleaned up vinyl. Maybe there was a test pressing of the record kicking around? It wasn't a 45 because the version on this CD is over 5 minutes long.

Remicks, you gotta get this compilation (and Vol.2) if you don't already have it. It's full of some great mid-tempo and uptempo philly grooves that were non-Philadelphia International or Salsoul.

I hope Motown puts out this unreleased Norman Harris album on their Hip-O Select line. It would be great to hear.

All of the brothers must have been hanging out together at Sigma Studios at the same time, with Jermaine working with the Harris Machine while the other guys worked with Gamble & Huff & Dexter Wansel, but for whatever reason, Jermaine's project was nixed.

This is quite interesting .......who went to Philly first ? Jermaine or The Brothers?
Maybe when Berry heard Jermaine's results from Philadelphia, he decided he didn't want to put out anything by Jermaine that would make listeners connect him in sound to the now departed Jacksons.

The Motown disco story is so messed up ....They quickly went from being the NO.1 disco label in '76 to mere also rans .

Jermaine Jackson particularly seemed to be a Motown artist trying to appeal to the dance crowd ..... he was the right age to be into the scene .... even if at the time he had to pretend that DADDY'S happily HOME every night with his wife: Berry's daughter ... (Like father-in-law , like son-in-law :icon_razz: :icon_surprised: )

Motown did Jermaine no favours by releasing the much more feeble LET'S BE YOUNG TONIGHT instead of going with what is an apparently great track in
GOOD FOR THE GANDER

That one lousy decision probably stalled Jermaine at a critical point in his solo career. :icon_evil: :icon_razz:

I'd would also recommend "The spirit of Philly" CD , I got it a while back after it was mentioned here, I didn't know (or forgot)until now , (also just read the liner notes) that "Good for the gander" was never released before, it is a great track that takes you back to the mid -seventies.:icon_cool:

My other favorite on this CD are "We've got to survive" by Revelation, and that Gloria Gaynor "This love affair" is awesome, don't remember that one at all. I need to get Vol II as I don't remember most of those either.:icon_confused:

Jermaine stayed at Motown, after his brothers left for Gamble-Huff & CBS/Epic cuz he was married to Berry Gordy's daughter, Hazel!!! He didn't wanna cross his father-in-law!!!

I believe that was from the Park Avenue album, which was half Norman Harris, half Joel Diamond. The Norman Harris produced tracks from that album are incredible.

This is quite topical as Jermaine came 2nd in the UK's 'Celebrity Big Brother' TV show this week & told everyone that he's about to mount a musical about him & his brothers! It really annoyed me how the presenter of the show & the audience kept singing 'Blame It On The Boogie' when Jermaine had nothing to do with that song! **** kickers!

LOL! Yeah. I also get peeved when they show an impersonation or tribute to the Supremes on some TV sitcom show, and they choose to sing Ain't No Mountain High Enough.
