Speaking of Barbra, "Funny Girl" was on TCM on Saturday night and boy, I enjoyed watching her in that movie!! She was brilliant and beautifully photographed. I loved the early Barbra. Her comic timing was so perfect and she could really physically clown around. Her first TV specials always showed this side of her with a few comic set pieces.

It's sad that after "What's Up, Doc" she mostly seemed to want to be seen as a "SERIOUS" actress Well, after "A Star Is Born" anyway. [ I guess there were a few more comedies: "For Pete's Sake" & "Up The Sandbox" come to mind. But they weren't very good!] She was at her best when she was "FUNNY" IMHO. :icon_lol:

Woody Allen was my hero in the Seventies. I always wanted Barbra & Bette to work with Woody --I thought that would have been comedy heaven. Duelling New York Jews!!! Bette & Woody actually did work together in a Paul Mazursky movie, 1991's "Scenes From A Mall." Woody & Bette were great together--but the movie sucked. Such a disappointment. :icon_eek:

Oh and there was a rumor that Barbra & Bette might do a movie of a play that James Kirkwood wrote for Mary Martin & Carol Channing called "Legends." Disney was said to be planning to film it--but that never happened.

Then a few years back, I read that Woody offered Barbra the role of his wife in "Small Time Crooks"--but she turned it down because she didn't wanna film in NYC in the summer or something like that-- and Tracey Ullman did it. It was an okay movie, actually Elaine May was the funniest person in it--but Barbra did return to comedy opposite Dustin Hoffman in "Meet The Fockers" and their scenes together were very funny. She's made no movies since. Maybe they will be in the 3rd part that's in the planning stages? I hope so. I really hate to see talent wasted.

    Another blast from the past.

I do miss those comedy sketches Harvey Korman was in on The Carol Burnett Show. I seem to remeber some sketch where he mentioned "like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind" to Lyle Waggoner that had me laughing. You had to see it.

So speaking of Bette Midler, she was the best thing about that horrible remake of The Women.

    Why yes. Yes I do.

Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand performing together ' Get Happy / Happy Days Are Here Again ' in The Judy Garland Show © in 1963.

Extract from The Judy Garland Show DVD Volume 5:

"(...) But the penultime moment of Show #9 came (almost) by accident. When [Norman] Jewison [the director] discovered that Ethel Merman was on site at CBS that week for The Red Skelton Hour, he suggested she also appear as an unbilled addition to Garland's show. Although Merman's appearance was a surprise only to the audience, even Variety concurred, 'It looked unrehearsed.' And if Ethel's take-charge demeanor momentarily overwhelmed Barbra, Judy took her old friend's bombast in stride, managing to both literally step back and remain in benevolent control of the moment. As Jewison rhapsodized years later: 'The three belters! God, they were sublime.'"

Cloris Leachman ["Nurse Diesel"] & Harvey Korman [Dr. Charles Montague"] in Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety"

Nurse Diesel heads the pecking order at the Psychotic Institute for the Very Very Nervous, Cloris Leachman is marvelous as usual and her cantilevered bras are a wonder to behold. :icon_lol:

"Those who are tardy do not get fruitcup"

"Nurse Diesel is my right hand man, err woman

[I can't find the scene where Nurse Diesel takes away Dr. Montague's fruit cup from the dinner plate--because he's tardy!] :icon_evil:

    YouTube - Division of correction

This scene is taken from Mel Brooks 1978 movie "High Anxiety". It depicts Nurse Diesel and Dr.Charles Montague engaging in a bit of adult after work activities. :icon_lol:

OMG I remember watching Paper Moon when I was a kid with my parents & we all loved it (my dad always loved anything set in the 20s or 30s), but I can't remember alot about the movie & had completely forgotten that Ms. Kahn was in it! It hasn't been shown on TV here for over 30 years. Thanx for that Lucille.

You are most welcome, Ethel. Madeline was on a career-best roll with "What's Up Doc"/"Paper Moon" /"Blazing Saddles"/"Young Frankenstein"/"High Anxiety"....then it all sorta fell flat. "Won Ton Ton, The Dog Who Saved Hollywood" started the decline. Sad. But luckily the great moments from the early films seem better than ever.

Oh, speaking of Lucille...did you know that Madeline was hired to play "Agnes Gooch" in the movie version of "Mame"---and, some time into the filming, Lucy had her FIRED???? She was replaced by Jane Connell who did the role on Broadway. Thus Madeline was able to do her Marlene Dietrich spoof in "Blazing Saddles"...Maddy got the better deal there.

you're right, Korman was a riot on his own but then teamed with Tim Conway...WOW! And if I can brag for a minute, I met Korman at an animation film festival in San Francisco (he was the voice of the Flintstone's Great Gazoo). He was extremely friendly and down to Earth (after I recovered from the shock of seeing him in person and noticing how different he was in person as opposed to on TV....he was much shorter in person, no make up, completely white hair). He was playing a game of "career trivia" with one of his fans and both were having a great time.

    I love the line 'I was a 12 o'clock girl in a 9 o'clock town, waiting for 2 o'clock with a 5 o'clock shadow'. That scenario is quite familiar! Nothing beats a cock in a frock Blanche!

Marky did you happen to see her perform in Berkeley in '75 ?? That's where I first saw her .

I took a liking to her immediately when I first heard DO YOU WANNA DANCE , her initial single release , because of it- I bought her album which included BOOGIE WOOGIE BUGLE BOY which first made her a name.

This comment was spot on and it reminds me of when she applied all that to her first appearance on Johnny Carson when I was a senior in high school .

I was bothered about the way Johnny had treated her on it and so she's one of the few performers I ever wrote to. .

As she performed she was marvelous , she didn't hold back ---she was flittering around in her platform shoes and long granny dress and camping it up and then as she sat on the couch she carried on with her rolling eyes and self-fanning with her hand , clutching her chest, etc. I felt Johnny was reacting to her as one of his "weird' type guests ....he kept hamming to the camera with the double takes and looks of wide-eyed bewilderment....those looks he was so good at .... like maybe he's found himself another Tiny Tim type.
I didn't like it so, I wrote her ..... telling her how much I liked her and to not pay Johnny Carson no mind !! :icon_mrgreen::icon_lol:.

The nice thing was ...she answered! Not to agree, "Ya that Carson is a big jack -ass"
but to say thanks for the support and to wish me well in college ! :icon_cool:

Funny that years later, she had gone on to be such a big Carson guest and such a favored regular , that it was she who was scheduled for his final show ... & it was she who would bring him to farewell tears on it .

    this just in :

    Huffington Post :

MSNBC interviewed Joan Rivers about the sad passing of legendary entertainment figure Ed McMahon. Rivers had nothing but praise for McMahon, however when anchor Contessa Brewer brought up Rivers' falling out with McMahon compatriot Johnny Carson, Rivers tone changed dramatically as she berated Carson, calling him a "bastard" and a "nasty man."

As regards Harvey's cute boyfs in the film, I s'pose when you're the writer & star you can choose whoever you want to be your boyf!
