    Hi-NRG Vs Northern Soul

All the following Northern Soul artists have been covered in a Hi-nrg stylee.

Can you name the tracks & the artist who covered them?

    Hoagy Lands
    The Sapphires
    The Ad-Libs
    Jimmy Radcliffe
    Mary Love
    The Tempos
    Yvonne Baker
    Joy Lovejoy
    The Invitations
    Nosmo King

for our *ahem* slightly older energy fans

If you didn't know then this will be a revelation

Shocking you not knowing your roots

The Jimmy Radcliffe tune is one of the ultimate Northern Soul tracks, but for the life of me I can't now recall who covered it in the early/mid 80's! Doin me head in fact.

You'll know most if not all of the titles tho matey

I`m a bit ignorant where Northern Soul is concerned.. I know Laura Pallas covered SKIING IN THE SNOW and I think the Flirtations track EARTHQUAKE was originally a Northern Soul hit.. ? I have a track called IN ORBIT by Yvonne Gidden which may also ahve been Northern Soul as well ?

    In Orbit - Joy Lovejoy
Ski-ing In The Snow - The Invitations

and I gotta say I still prefer the originals :icon_confused:

Yvonne Gidden was on Electricity, Kev Roberts (N.Soul DJ) old label, so there's a huge clue

Nosmo King (an obvious play on words!) & The Javells - Goodbye nothing to say was coverd by *drum roll* The Nolans and produced by mr levine himself! 1986 I believe.

The cover of Long After Tongiht Is All is still buggning as Ican't recall the hi-nrg grouo which covered it aroun 86/87. Secession or sommat! Grrr

That Sapphires is tracjk is my fave and I lurv it. Such a dancable tune :)

You know wot Charlie, I knew it began with "T", but could fink for the life of me.

Are there any others I've forgotten about?

Anyone else hear The Nolans doing Goodbye Nothing To Say? (I remember it being a "cover-up" release, with no info on the artist, until everyone loved it, then the bombshell was dropped it were the all-singing, all-performing Irish sisters!)

    Mary Love - Linda Lewis

Linda did a version in the 60's too funny enuf. There's a whole list of Motorcity and Nightmare Hi- Nrg covers to plus things like Areppio's 'Love and Desrire which shares a melody with The Flirtations ' Stronger Than her Love' (Sidney Barnes wrote them both)... The flip side of Shalamars first 12" is a direct rip of Fathers Angels 'Bok To Bach (but not really Hi nrg) Bonnie Pointer covered The Elgins 'Heaven Must Have Sent You' which is always a popular track at a Northen do..there must be more...

I loved Ian Levine`s re-working of HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU on his NIGHTMARE label.

That is a great HINRG track, ANGIE GOLD also covered it on Passion Records. I have the CROISETTE version on 12" and the "best of" CD
It would be interesting to hear the original version...

Now, how do we go about getting it to you, Energyguy? Drop me a line !

As an aside, there's a new Levine CD out called 'Solid Ground' which conatains some great new stuff in a Northern vein including one that borrows heavily from 'Landslide'.

Neil, go back to The Soul Club link and search Tony Clarke - cos Landslide is there, but I really can't recall the Croisette version at all.

I know there was a "house" remake of Mistura's - The Flasher, which was a stomper beforehand, but just ended-up beefed up with bass.

I may be imagining it, but was there ever a hi-rng cover of Dean Parrish's - I'm On My Way.

I know - I have it somewhere, but since listing my hi-nrg collection (and it not selling), they're no longer in alphabetical order. (I can't even recall if I've even still got it! I had it as a white label, but do know I was never that keen on it, which is why I can't recall the song itself I spose)

Didn't like Nothing But Blackmail Either to be honest.

Have you listened yet to Tony clarke's version to see if it's the same song?

Not Northern and having already mentioned one Tamla classic, Heaven Musta Sent You.........

    let's not forget:

Ms Wilde's rendition of Come See About Me
Angie Gold (again) - Third Finger Left Hand
    FGTH - War
    Evelyn Thomas - Reflections
and my personal favourite Deborah Washington - Nothing But Heartaches

Didn't Mary Wells also re-do My Guy slightly beefed up?

Gawd - Forgot, didn't Sinitta do Love On A Mountain Top (easy to forget I know)
