Best From Artist 29 - Shalamar

Hmmm, "Take That To The Bank" or "Right In The Socket." Those are my two favorites but if I had to chose just one well, ok I'll take "Take That To The Bank." Oh, Shalamar is this week's artist for those of you who haven't figured it out 8)
As I type this I'm looking at the 80s version of this group. Talk about jerri curls and activator dripping all over the place and I'm referring to the men?

Paul my dear, your favorites turn out to be my faves as well. I'm torn between the same songs that you've listed and just like you, I have to choose "Take That To The Bank".

My least favorites from Shalamar are "For The Lover In You" :x and "A Night To Remember" :x .

HustleBaby: I can see why 'A Night to Remember' might be bottom of your list, but I have to say that it was their biggest record on the floor, especially the '84? remix. It was a must play for one hell of a long time.
I have more Shalamar records than any other artists, but the ones that I like best are the aforementioned 'Take That to the Bank' and the superlative re-mix of 'Right In the Socket'.
'Friends' and 'Uptown Festival' are probably my least favourite.

things to remember about shalamar

Hi

Shalamar... It's strange that a group with members like Jody Watley and Howard Hewett was so faceless. Maybe this happens because it was a group assembled by a record producer for SOLAR. Anyway, the biggest song Shalamar ever produced is A NIGHT TO REMEMBER - it has a great hook and it's very up. It is a dancefloor classic, no doubt about it. This song is much, much better than the rest of their catalog. I suspect that people don't like this one because it was overplayed - who knows?

THE SECOND TIME AROUND and MAKE THAT MOVE are great too. Their first album (UPTOWN REVUE) has some beautiful ballads (Jody and Howard are not singing on this first record, I think) and some embarassing moments too (Inky Dinky Wang Dang Doo anyone? ). I bought my copy of UPTOWN FESTIVAL on CD for U$ 1,00!

Their mid-80's stuff are weak and forgettable, at least for me. When I bought their GREATEST HITS a few years ago, I recorded the first half of the record and get rid of it quickly.

zeca azevedo, still waiting for a real MOTOWN revue

Shalamar was the first group that I (re) recognized as at the beginning in the change of musical dance styles in late 1979 - along with The Whispers.
That being said, my two faves, are "A Night To Remember" and one that most of you may not remember (unless you have their anthology) is "Deadline USA" (can't keep away from those quick-paced records)....from, I think, the movie, DC Cab.

Least faves are probably "Friends" and "Tossin and Turnin."

Hey, Danceman. This sounds like it would make an excellent topic, hint, hint. I almost feel like saying "talk amongst yourselves" here :D

I almost wrote I've Just Begun to Love You, then I went  , right label, wrong group. So, what I want to say is I Can Make You Feel Good. :) Yeah, soooo good.

Also, (you know I wasn't going to leave just one, Paul :P ) is that hot little jam from FOOTLOOSE, Dancing In The Sheets.

I like "That That To The Banks" in Shalamar Disco Gardens :P , I think the introdution of Bee Gees's "More Than Woman" is there, it's a great similarity.

I must add three more Shalamar favorites:

Over & Over
I Owe You One
Here I Am - Is this the correct title?

Oh Paul, you brought back memories of those messy Jheri Curl days. Would you believe that I had a Jheri Curl, Carefree Curl and Wave Nouveau? Unlike some folks, I took very good care of my hair so it wasn't greasy and dripping. If its one thing that I hated to see back then and up to this day, was MEN with Jheri curls :o !

Sidebar: Anyone remember the wickedly funny scene in the Eddie Murphy/Arsenio Hall(!!! )(--yeah, he was hot then, believe it or not!!!) movie "Coming To America"....when this Jheri curled family was seated on a baby blue coach having their photo taken? After they get up the camera lingers on the couch and the 3 nasty grease stains they left behind!!!!!

I literally laughed for 5 minutes after that scene was over!!!

Anyone remember????

I'm sure you looked fine with it Delight. I dated many women wearing that style. The only thing that was annoying was how wet my hands got from running my fingers through their hair (on the scalp that is  ).
I was never interested in wearing that style. If I even gave it a thought I'm sure my friends would have thought I was going gay :)
I must confess though that for a short period around 1980 I did the James Brown thing, fried and dyed (well, not quite dyed) and laid to the side

I still remember that scene quite well Marky. I have a female friend that still likes her hair like that
Speaking of "Coming To America", Eddie's character should have stayed with Vanessa Bell Calloway. She was definitely finer :D

Hi Marky,
I remember "Coming To America" well most of it. But that scene that you're describing was hilarious  !!!!!!! It's funny how back in the 80's, you will see Jheri Curl families - from the grandma to the adolescent kids.

What's up Paul,
You are the first guy that I know that prefer Vanessa Bell C. over Shari Headley. Back in the late 80's-early 90's, Shari was getting a lot of recognition (besides her modeling career) she was deemed as a new black starlet. Meanwhile I've only knew about Vanessa because she played in All My Children.

P.S - I'm still trying to picture you in a James Brown type hair-do :-? And running your fingers through their hair (the hair on their scalp) you're a funny guy you know that.

Hey Delight.
First, I'm a leg man. Vanessa had it all over Shari there. I know beauty is subjective but Vanessa is prettier to me. Not to say that Shari is not but between the two, Vanessa is the clear winner. As for the other guys you know well, I'm pretty sure most of that is a result social conditioning if you know what I mean. If they shared the same hue I'd be willing to bet there'd be little disagreement.
Now my James Brown hair. Back then it looked ok I guess. Now, looking at it through 2002 eyes, I would never do that. In fact try not to picture me like that. I'd hate to scare you 8)
