Original to Scratchin / Magic disco machine

Im getting old and forgetfull and just cant remember the name of the artist and song that is the original vocal version of the track Scratchin by Magic Disco Machine.

I do remember its on Motown
Its a guy
The cover might be black with a purple and or grey square on the front.
I also think its from 1973

Any that can fill me in on the blanks here ?

Reuben Howell 'You Made Your Bed'

I think the instrumental version (Scratchin') was way better! They funked it up more, whereas the original sounded rather pop-soul.
