Explain why you like these songs...

Is there a tactful way to ask this?

There's certain songs I've heard about that a lot of people like. I see them on All-Time Favorite Lists, etc. And then I finally hear them. And I can't understand why people like them.

But I want to have an open mind. And I know I like stuff that other people don't (Liquid Gold, The Models, Gary's Gang, Denise McCann, etc.)

But I don't understand why "If There's Love" by Amant is so well liked. Plus "Cher Chez La Femme" by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. Or anything by D.C. LaRue. Do they have a bigger and better sound when played through a nightclub sound system? Were they a fresh sound when they first came out? Or were they just really fun to dance to?

    Thanks.

"If There's Love" STILL melts my heart: the strings, the vocals, the production, the melody, everything...one of my all time favorite disco records. The only other song that gives me a similar rush is the Munich Machine's "Get on the Funk Train." Just my luck that both songs are difficult or impossible to find on CD (yes, I KNOW "If There's Love" is available on CD but I have had bad experience ordering through the mail and now avoid doing it whenever I can...)

I understand what you're saying. I bought Amant, Don Ray and Cerrone's first two records based on other peoples' rave reviews back when they were new. I didn't care for them back then but held on to them for years in hopes I might like them at some future date or upon repeated listening. I never grew into them. I would like to try to listen to them again now after joining this website but when facing a move accross half the continent from Wisconsin to Washington I had to cull a lot of stuff, and those ended up in a thrift store bin along with at least a thousand other disco records.
Old Skinflint loves Amant but loathes Percy Faith's Summer Place '76. I play the Percy Faith at least once a month...and tossed out Amant.

I think there are many camps in this tribe of disco enthusiasts.
One camp likes what I would label trancey-spacey Disco (Amant, Don Ray)
Others are more prone to Funky Disco, and others gravitate to a smoother jazzy style.
I fall into a more commercial Pop-Disco camp. I love Ring My Bell and smile at Disco Duck. Liquid Gold's My Baby's Baby gives me tingling up and down my spine like Tuxedo Junction's Old Black Magic. But I liked and kept Ultimate, Voyage, Midnight Rhythm and USA European Connection, even all the Love and Kisses LP's. There are regulars here who would despise any one or all of my faves. And I love it that these folks are here.
But somehow Amant and Don Ray and the first Cerrones just seemed to blandly go nowhere: no exciting hooks or riffs or masterful vocals or soaring melodies. Maybe its time for another listen but I didn't ever warm up to the more Muzak style disco that I percieved thes to be.

I didn't like Midnight Rhythm at first. But then it grew on me. Kind of like Constellation Orchestra. Or Saturday Night Band. But Amant hurts. I actually get the blues when I listen to "If There's Love."

But I urge you to give Cerrone another try. I know what you mean about some of his earlier stuff. But I think he really hit his stride on "Call Me Tonight." It sounds boring at first. But it grows on you. And I really like Don Ray.

I really loved Cerrone 3 (Supernature) and almost everything of his thereafter. It was Love in C Minor and Cerrone's Paradise that just never clicked for me.
Tripping on the Moon, Call Me tonight, Rock Me, Je Suis Musique and Where Are You Now and the majority of his stuff survived the cutbacks when I moved. I saved two copies of The Golden Touch LP.
So, do you like Love in C Minor? Is it fair to ask (tactfully) Why?

I do like Love In C Minor. Because of the transitions. It's sappy, then it goes into more driven sections. So the silly parts make you apreciate the cool parts more. Cerrones's Paradise shocked me. I thought it was pornographic. But I was only about 15 when I first heard it. But even then, I thought he did it with a sense of humor. And a year or two later I was so desensitized that I didn't raise an eyebrow when I heard Love Massage by Musique. But at the time, Cerrone's best work, imo, was with Don Ray on Got To Have Lovin'.

My favorite Cerrone album is You Are The One. But second would be Hysteria which came out in 2002. The first song on it, You Are The One, sounds like a lost Peter Jacques Band tune. So I admire Cerrone for never leaving disco. Especially using sounds that might seem dated. And that's another reason while I like Love In C Minor. It's king of Love Boat-ish. But that's the point. It conjures up the feeling of that time.

I was always a fan of certain labels like CASABLANCA,PRELUDE,WEST END,RFC and so on...

So I really got into a lot of the music by affiliation...At the times the labels had a certain sound and it made me discover tons of artists.

Obviously if they're just moaning and groaning it cannot be called an orgazm, right? Massive amounts of sleazy euro 7-inchers contain huffing and puffing but no actual fireworks. What about Melody Stewart's "Action Satisfaction"? Did she or didn't she? Must disqualify that Hot Posse early 80's record as well even though the girl askes the guy to shoot her in the face and guy says Here It Comes! because it's hi-nrg already. And did Donna Summer not claim she made those noises while suffering a severe toothache, and that she never simulated sexual intercourse in any studio? So, how do you say in Engliish, off the top of my hat?:
    1. Marilyn Chambers: Benihana
    2. Viandro: Midnight Affair
    3. Eli's Second Coming: Love Chant
    4. Cerrone: Love In C Minor
    5. Boystown Gang: Cruising The Streets
    6. Poussez: Come On And Do It
    7. Sessomatto: Sessomatto (How Funny Sex Can Be)
    8. Vladimir Cosma: L'Animal - this may be debatable, though I think at least the...lion? arrives.
    9. Pasquale Dagorn and The Sounds of Love Orch: Love To Love You Baby
    10. Cerrone: Cerrone's Paradise

Does Yoko Ono's 'Kiss Kiss Kiss' count?

Pre- or non-disco moaners include Jungle Fever by The Chakachas, and Love Won't Let Me Wait by Major Harris.

Chakachas Jungle Fever must be included and high too in the greatest orgasm list. Not too sure about old Major. What about the ending of "I'm On Fire" by 5000 Volts then, when the girls go: I'm coming, i'm coming, i'm coming!!! I recall some of us doing rude jerk off moves with our hands on the floor when they spinned that.

I like Donna Summer in Could it be Magic. Even has pulsing symbol sounds right after she peaks to suggest her unvoiced male partner is sharing a mutual achievement.

Seems like the majority of orgasmic disco moaners are female. Can anyone name songs with orgasmic male voices?

I just checked out my Santa Esmeralda records and it was the LP version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. However, I don't think he quite came. Just sort of on the threshold.

It's subtle little production ideas like that that make records great IMO. Do producers come up with touches like that any more?

    Hi FranceJoliFan:
Cathedrals by D. C. Larue is a very beautiful song and the lyrics are a celebration to late 70's hedonism!!! I also like If There's Love by Amant.

    No.
They were just disco songs like so many others of the era. It is just that many disco fans like them.

Musical taste is something particular to each one of us. I generally tend not to like songs that are built exclusively upon major chords sequences.... like something that goes from A major to D major to E major then back to A major.

But I generally like songs that involve chords like F7M, D7M, C7M, G7M, A7M or A minor, D minor, E minor... things like that.

It's personal... even unconscious to each music fan.

I may regret the day I have it this figured out as to why I like certain songs .......

    BUT...

I have recently been listening to the Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band debut album quite a bit lately. I love this entire album, from start to finish - it just captures that time for me perfectly. And, I think that it holds up well today (30 years later, wow). I don't think I listened to Amant much back then, but in recent years I developed an appreciation for much of his music, including "If There's Love" - like others have mentioned, it's a beautifully produced piece of music from that period.

I really like Patricia Paay version of "Who's That Lady With My Man?"

YouTube - Patricia Paay - Who's That Lady With My Man (Musikladen).

But everyone seems to ignore Patricia Paay

Can't get enough of it... Wish there was a longer version
    with an instrumental section =)

    Hi Remicks:

One doesn't need to have music knowledge to know why he likes this or dislikes that. But since I play guitar in a amateur family group, I discovered that I don't like many major chord songs.

I played this for them in the key of A:

    YACKETY YAK (el coco): A, D, E, A
    ONE FOR YOU (la bionda): A, D, A, D, A, D, E, D, A
    WILLIE & HAND JIVE (rinder & lewis): A, D, A, D, A, E7, A

If it is high to sing you can play it in the key of C. But it doesn't matter: the 'feel' will be the same: C to F to C to F to G back to C... Sort of silly 'happy feel'.

I prefer songs which have more chord variations than that...
....it puts a lot more 'light' and 'shade' in the music.

HOUSE OF RISING SUN (santa esmeralda):
    A-, C, D, F, A-, C, E, A-, C, D, F, A-, E7, A-

    MORE THAN A WOMAN:
    A7M C#- B- E7
    A7M C#- B- E7
    C G E-
    C D G E-
    C G E-
    F7M E7
    F7M C D-
    F7M C D-
    F7M E7 A7M

These are the basic chords. Chords are the foundation of a song. Upon them the melody line, the arrangements and the solos are built.

If music was a house, the chords would be the foudation. The arrangements and solos would be the equivalent to walls, doors, windows, etc.... You can make a 'cover' of a song : change the arrangements, make new solos, change the rythm... but basic chords are unremovable. If you do, you'll change the song into a new one.

FranceJoliFan: Have you reconsidered on "Cher Chez La Femme"? This song is just beautiful to me. The horns, the violins, the sultry voice. I personally dont think i could dance to it but I love to hear it on my head-phones. I was so happy when they had this on the soundtrack to 54. My sister-in-law told me they use to dance to this back in they hey-day. IMO, I dont consider this Disco at all but I'm glad it makes alot of Disco lists.:icon_cool:
