James Coit - Black Power & Millie Jackson - A House For Sale![]()
A friend is starting a new Northern Soul night in Southampton, England in 2007 and wants to include as many later Disco type 70's Northern Soul tracks as possible as he has a large following already who love the 70's Northern Soul sounds like Jan Jones, Brothers Guiding Light, Greg Perry, Crystal Motion, Black Nasty, The Whispers, Florence Jenkins, The Quinntones,The Meldrews, Connie Laverne and Georgia Berry. He's an Afro-American ex Serviceman who fell in love with the scene when he was stationed here in the 80's and has fond memories of the comradeship and his time spent dancing to what he describes as 'fantastic' records he heard in his youth and records like them. He's asked me for suggestions for his playlists and I said I'd post here as I know there are many who understand what kind of thing he's looking for.
So, suggestions would be welcome !

In the club i worked at in the 70's i played everything from Donna Summer to Brass Construction. We had a hard core of soul fans there as well so you would have heard stuff like The Spinners. Paullette Reeves. Jeannie Reynolds,Lou Rawls,Phyllis Hyman & Randy Brown.
Nearly forgot ................
Paul Humphrey - Cochise!
Awesome tune :icon_biggrin:
I wish your friend luck.
BITD there was a guy called Shay who used to bang on relentlessly about Northern Soul and did the odd bit of DJing in the area. Don't know if he ever converted many non-believers. I'd have thought your friend might have a fighting chance nowadays, what with all the exposure it's received in the past few years. Even in Southampton (that's Southampton, just in case the irony is lost on some folks).
Thanks for your good wishes Quinny, I'll pass them on to him.I'm sure he'll be appreciative.
I don't think the idea is to convert non believers tho. In my experience non believers usually have their minds made up already and aren't worth the bother ! He feels he's tapping into a large amount of people that already exist in the area and as you must know Northern Soul people will travel miles such is their passion !
Here are some more Northern/Modern Soul/Disco sides appreciated by the Northern Crowd and the year of issue...
Let Me Make Love To You - Gene Chandler (1980)
Honey Baby (Be Mine) - Innervision (1974)
We're On The Right Track - Ultra High Frequency (1973)
See You When I Git There - Lou Rawls (1977)
Look On The Good Side - The Invitations (1974)
Sorry - Grace Jones (1976)
