Whilst today is a day of celebration, it will always now be remembered as the day the Godfather of Soul passed away. Sad news that James Brown has succombed to pneumonia at the age of 73.
RIP

Like I said on the other board, for me, it'll be one of the worst christmas' ever. It'll be like remembering where I was when I heard of John Lennon's murder. Or the first space shuttle blowing up.
I honestly can't believe it. The guy was supposed to play up at a nearby casino here in Canada in January, but I figured I'd wait till next time he blew by to buy tickets 'cause he would be back again.
From Papa's Got A Brand New Bag onward, the guy was the definition of funk and dance. He wasn't the nicest guy in the industry, but if he was, then his sound done his way wouldn't have been possible.
All the great ones of R&B keep passing on, and there isn't anyone to pick up the torches for these legends. The future of black music seems so bleak now more than ever...
Again, RIP Godfather of Soul. Your funky rhythms will reverberate throughout time, forever.

James Brown is dead
This is sad news, a landmark of modern music has disapeared.
We were even expecting him soon here for a farewell concert.
Rest in peace James
If you buy this record your life, will be better.
Sad indeed, however the cable I read (from Associated Press) stated that Mr. Brown died last Monday. That would be December 18th.
That same cable stated -for Remick's shame- that Mr. Brown was a pioneer of funk, rap and disco. Sorry Remicks, but no mention of Isaac Hayes whatsoever :icon_rolleyes:
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
so so sad... weird, I had been playing a Cd by him recently. I had no idea he was in the hospital. If it wasn't for him. There would be no disco.
James Brown is being buried today.
Here's a medley of hits ...Good Foot; Soul Power; Escape-ism; and Make It Funky:
JB on Soul Train
The guys I recognize include St Clair Pickney (squeely horn on Escape-ism - he has the grey streak in his hair); Fred Wesley (black trombone); on stage from left to right - 'Cheese' Martin on rhythm guitar, John 'Jabo' Starks on Drums, Fred Thomas on bass, John Morgan? on second drums/tambourine, and Jimmy Nolan picking notes on the guitar.
And here's JB on the Midnight Special sporting a moustache:
JB Payback...
Edit: I want to add this interview, which has been all over youtube and people are laughing at it and saying James was high. Now, I'm not sure if the guy did drugs or drank too much alcohol. He wasn't the holiest of men. But I think he's acting up in the interview because he's trying to throw off the interviewer from the serious topic. It seems bizarre, especially when you see it in the edited version on youtube, but in the full version you get a sense that he's just toying with the lady. Most celebrities would probably get mad or walk off the interview when confronted with potentially character-damaging questions.

RIP Godfather.

Evelyn "Champaign" King comments on James Brown's passing :
I had the pleasure as a young artist working with James Brown two times in my career. I opened for Mr. Brown after
his release "Living In America" at Radio City Music Hall; and again live with my band at the Apollo in New York City.
All I can basically say is to those who don't know about James Brown, take a look at how he gave back to
the community, without any complaints. And stop look and listen to the effect he still has on so many. I want to say
Mr. Brown, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life. You are truly missed. Respects to James Brown's family. May God bless you and keep you safe! Just understand no one can replace the man who started it all for so many who forget! He is still "the Godfather Of Soul". Our condolences,
Evelyn "Champagne" King, husband Freddie Fox & The King family
