The last disco record was out of San Francisco ???

    *****

Was the last "disco" disco record fittingly released out of San Francisco ??? :icon_cool: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_question: :icon_cool:

As I listen to Moby Dick Records'

GOT YOU WHERE I WANT YOU BABE
    Stereo Fun Inc
    .
    from 1983

    I'm inclined to suggest so !!! :icon_biggrin:

Rapid fire , energetic, and yet smooth flowing usage of real instruments including guitars , drums, horns , piano , and lovely swirling strings ( as well as some synthage ) ... diva style vocals .... a bongo break ... a LAST DANCE final horn-punched ending note .... all displaying a true revelance toward good ol' fashioned disco .

In fact I was asking myself what earlier classic disco song does this remind me of ???

Aha ...... MOVE ON UP by Destination ... strong similarities in their entire sound.

So it was with a degree of admitted satisfaction (pats self on back) that when I looked in the vault , my assessment proved to be correct ......

... both of these terrific disco tunes were the result of the production and arrangement work of Elton Farokh Ahi .

    Isn't ELTON a great producer ?
The whole DESTINATION album is a workout must-have.

I was also surprised to find GOTCHA WHERE I WANT YOU as an HAZELL DEAN early single from the 70's...
    Who knew ?

The STEREO FUN INC is a masterpiece.Meshing disco with HiNRG ; and those vocals !!!

Now you put me in the mood ; I'll just have to play these today!

Out of Miami's Pandisc label, Koffie's "And I'm telling you" 1983 and "Total eclipse of the heart" 1984 were late Disco songs that received local attention..

Great record and one I remember well from the time. I like it so much the records label is featured on my 'myspace' page ! (address below).

But the last 'disco record ?

    No.

While I agree one hundred percent that it's a great record, I also remember that at the time of release it sounded retro. In 1983 the records of that tempo were increasingly 'High Energy' sounding and 'Got You Where I Want You' sounded 'throwback' in it's use of strings, percussion (Paulineo Da Costa) horns and drums. Is there any way of finding out when it was actually recorded, not released?

As for the last 'disco' record again it comes back to the same old question. Whats the definition of 'Disco' ?

For my money the last great 'Disco' record was Ron Hall And The Muthafunkas' The Way You Love Me' on TSOD from 2006.

It is exatly that retro sound , that makes me comment that this was possibly the last most "disco" sounding disco record to be released ... the last of the old school sounding records .

This is why I used the words "old fashioned disco" ...even though I'd be hard pressed as to what it was exactly that was meant by that :icon_rolleyes: ... since disco never sat still long enough to be any one certain sound ....
several sounds could equally qualify as being "old-fashioned disco"
    .
--- I doubt there is any single record that will ever be defined as the true , one and only last disco record ... just as there will never be a single truly first disco record ..... or will anybody be able to say as an absolute : disco started :icon_arrow: ... here.....and then it ended :icon_arrow: ... here....

There's two much grey area .....even when, Simon, you ask for the definition of disco itself.....

Mixmachine has already mentioned two others that he feels fit the bill as the last "disco" disco song too ....but since I'm not familiar with them ...I can't comment.
I'm sure there are many later songs that leaned more to the older sounds than the new that could therefore I.D. them as being "real" disco ( again ---- whatever that is !!!!:icon_razz::icon_razz:)

OK I'm starting to feel like i'm not saying what it is I think I'm trying to say :icon_razz: ... so time to stop. :icon_lol:

I'll just say it this way ... that the Stereo Fun Inc. record is amongst the very last to be released of a certain breed of disco music ....

And I am also curious though, as to when GOT YOU WHERE I WANT YOU BABE was recorded ???
Was it a part of the Destination project ...extra music that got set aside ?? This could explain its sound.
Curiously ... the jacket acknowledges all the musicians ( and I've not the Destination album handy to compare players ) ...BUT .... NO mention of who it is doing the vocals ?????
    Seems odd ....

Could the "last disco record" actually be out of TORONTO (wide-eyed X 3) !

THIS could also be the last one, IMO...... - the last bongo banging record to fully embrace the innocence , the optimism, and most importantly: the joyous uplifting spirit of it all ......

    and -
the last to express the underlying empowering theme that had propelled disco throughout its against-all-odds run .

    RISE UP 1983

We want to be singin' at the end of the day
We want freedom to love who we pleeeeeease

the unpretentious video cinches it .....this could be it ......

I can't say that I'd ever considered this song as disco. No strings, for a start.

BTW, what is this "underlying empowering theme" of which you speak? "Rise Up" is a fairly overt gay pride anthem (note the line about "freedom to love who we please")... well, it was as overt as was possible in 1984, which was still subtle enough to be lost on most people when it became a mainstream hit here at the time. :)

Retro-sounding Disco records out after 1983, with violins? Check the new DC LaRue record - if that ain't the latest (and I doubt "the last") classically propotioned disco record with strings, girl choruses, drama arrangements etc then let us know if something got released this week.
Also check out all the Bollywood stuff, broaden the horizons. Alcazar from Sweden, the band said it's Disco. What do you call Dame Shirley Bassey's "disco mix" of "La Passione", with it's full orchestra, or her last year's "Apartment"(Cd version not the "live" one on youtube)? The new Arpadys-styled 2010 stuff by Faze Action? The makers of those tracks are quite in-the-know and they called them disco, so we better believe it, non?

Surely this was the last proper disco track - it even has strings & is very uplifting i think:

    ...ya gotta beat the street......

True no strings ....but it's even more severe than that Bruce, there are no horns either!!!!

    But then ----
plenty of "disco"- disco songs didn't .
A stringless, hornless example just debuted this week on Marky's chart and is about to become one of the biggest disco records of all time: DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO .

For me, , RISE UP qualifies because of an attitude it conveys , in the same vein as DWYWD , & it does so within the frame work of upbeat dance music that does retain certain classical disco elements like bongoing percussion, tambourine , a groovin' bass line, synth sound effects ....chorused vocals...

    - and that
a longer version was created and released as a12 inch never hurts the disco argument :

1983 is one of those tricky years for me as to what is "disco" at this point. (?)

Here are the Top Twenty songs of that year.....

    1983 BILLBOARD TOP 50 DANCE/ DISCO SINGLES/ALBUMS

    1) BILLIE JEAN/ BEAT IT - Michael Jackson (Epic)
    2) LET'S DANCE - David Bowie (EMI-America)
    3) HOLIDAY/ LUCKY STAR - Madonna (Sire)
    4) ROCKIT - Herbie Hancock (Columbia)
    5) STATE FARM/ NOBODY'S DIARY - Yaz (Sire)
    6) NASTY GIRL - Vanity 6 (WB)
    7) FLASHDANCE...WHAT A FEELING - Irene Cara (Casablanca)
    8. 1999 - Prince (WB)
    9) THE SAFETY DANCE - Men Without Hats (Backstreet)
    10) LIES/ BEACH CULTURE - Thompson Twins (Arista)

    11) SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE - Thomas Dolby (Capitol)
    12) JEOPARDY - Greg Kihn Band (Beserkley)
    13) I.O.U. - Freeez (Streetwise)
    14) IT'S RAINING MEN- The Weather Girls (Columbia)
    15) SPEAKING IN TONGUES LP (BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE) - Talking Heads (Sire)
    16) ALL I NEED LP (DON'T STOP) - Sylvester (Megatone)
    17) BLUE MONDAY/ THE BEACH - New Order (Factory)
    18. (KEEP FEELING) FASCINATION - The Human League (A&M)
    19) THE LOOK OF LOVE - ABC (Mercury)
    20) HIP HOP, BE BOP (DON'T STOP) - Man Parrish (Importe/12)
    markydefad

I'd be interested to hear which of these songs do you Bruce and other forum members regard as "disco"?? (??)

BTW, what is this "underlying empowering theme" of which you speak? I didn't realize it was considered an anthem. But yes - that is the underlying empowering theme fueling the disco flame that I'm referring to --- just as DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO 's message reinforced the same developing social attitudes of the time.

Listening to DWYWD now, it seems far more tame and some may wonder why it was so huge ... .. I think it was largely because it was this message song with attitude .... ...Early 1977, this is a transitional time in disco ...the missing horns and strings... goodbye to the more frilly light-hearted hustle tunes .....hello hard-core percussion and extended breaks .... The boys are out now in the clubs and in big strong numbers- they are feeling less apologetic and a little more assured, and with strength in numbers, the floor becomes more tribal.
I call DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO the first "jeans and no shirt" disco song.

    Jussik:

The" last disco record" certainly makes for an interesting debate. When I first joined here in '05, I would have argued that disco never died .... it was a musical continuum that never let up and still exists to this day.

I now think of disco as something more specific than that . Disco was an era, a movement , a cultural phenomenon empowered through the music it created of and for itself.
In reverence to those that trail blazed, disco to me is something much more defined.

When looking at it this way, - which record then becomes the last "disco" one ??? Based on what ? A certain sound? But then, when was disco ever based on a certain sound?? Donna Summer in of herself , went through several styles, all accepted as disco. There has always been a spectrum ... a variety of sounds. It is in this evolving context that I look at certain songs like GYWIWYB and RISE UP , each having their own particular fading disco characteristics that might make them stand out as the "last" -the last of an era. ..... .

But if disco is thought of as music strictly in the musical sense : say as 4/4 pounding rhythms from which to gyrate on a dance floor, then it can be argued that it is indeed still around ...

Meaning the last disco song, with strings or not :
not only hasn't been composed yet ...
it may never be . .....

Well just wading in the conversation to add my 2 cents worth, but surely the most "classic" disco sounding track of all of these has got to be "It's Raining Men" by the Weather Girls?

    I agree with that !!
How can the TWO TONS doing a Paul Jabara song with such an upbeat theme - not be .....

Similarly , how can a "Donna Summer" vocal of an equally upbeat Giorgio song not be :
