Ring My Bell is easily my choice. Still can't get that "pauhn" sound out of my head :icon_eek:
Hello Guys! It's been a long, long time since I've dropped by. So glad to be back!I've been reading some very interesting threads here and thought about this as I was reading the thread about what song made you "run to the dancefloor"... I thought about the opposite...What song did you tend to "sit out"? I remember at high school dances as well as some of the local discos here in the desert southwest, the kids never really liked dancing to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love"...We thought it was just a little too fast and a little too long (little did we know) :icon_lol: Another song that usually cleared the dancefloor was "Disco Duck" and believe it or not, "Y.M.C.A" as well as "Macho Man"! Look forward to your responses...
Take Care... Mario![]()
Ring My Bell is easily my choice. Still can't get that "pauhn" sound out of my head :icon_eek:
Find them and destroy them!
IMO paul, that "pauhn" sound is the best bit about the track! :icon_confused: :icon_lol: I never liked this track mainly 'cos the song & production are so unpleasant. Along with Kelly Marie's 'Feels like Im In Love' this has to rate as the disco record with the nastiest, cheapest sound.(I'm not including stuff after '82 when 'cheapo' became de rigeur!
)
...ya gotta beat the street......
Probably anything by Boney M. especially "Rasputin" - "Brown Girl In The Ring". I remember a local club with a resident DJ who always played Boney M. we devised a cunning plan, one of our friends would be the decoy and ask him for a request while somebody else would lift the arm off the Boney M record.
"YMCA" - The Village People - dreadful...
I hate it whenever a club or dance always plays YMCA or Ring My Bell whenever they start mixing in old disco standards. No imagination. When I did DJ gigs, even though it was just company christmas parties, I threw in obscure disco tunes like say a BT Express tune that wasn't Do It or Express, and they danced. Mind you, they were also plenty wasted, but that's when you pull out all the good underground disco tunes.
The song is terrible. Her voice is also really annoying. But I love the video. It's hilarious - her walking around London England with two dancers in sailor uniforms. They got some great moves. Certainly a welcome distraction from Kelly Marie herself.Along with Kelly Marie's 'Feels like Im In Love' this has to rate as the disco record with the nastiest, cheapest sound.
Disco Funk
always detested "I Will Survive", anything by KC and the Sunshine Band (dumb lyrics, weak vocals), almost anything by the Village People or Kool and the Gang and novelty songs like "Disco Duck". Also, disco remixes of rock and pop songs intended only to cash in on disco's popularity.
Disco Duck or DisGo-Rilla - Rick Dees
Zodiacs - Roberta Kelly
YMCA/Macho Man/In The Navy - Village People (except for Go West)
Feels Like I'm In Love - Kelly Marie
The Main Event - Barbara Striesand
Copacabana - Barry Manillow
Don't Stop The Music - Bay City Rollers (Although I'm a big fan!)
I Was Made For Dancin/Feel The Need - Leif Garrett (why oh why did he put a bad name to disco)
Kiss In The Dark - Pink Lady
Most anything by the Bee Gees - except You Should Be Dancing, along with most of the songs mentioned previously.
I never liked Michael Jackson & it was torture during the Thriller era when the particular club I went to would play each hit throughout the night....every night.
I have to agree. Although I like Michael and The Jacksons....the Thriller album was overkill. You couldn't go anywhere or turn on the radio without hearing anything from it...kinda like "Saturday Night Fever".....
HELP! What's wrong with me? I like all those records, deeply, madly!!!!
Even......
Do I need a visit to da Disco Doc??????

"What a fool believes" by the Doobies, this song not only made me run from the dance floor but the club too.:icon_lol:
"Enough is enough" Summer and Straisand gave us the most annoying Disco song ever!!!! IMO![]()
Hey SandraDee,
I don't like that one particular BCR song....but other than that massive fan since the elementary grades....As for Barbara's "The Main Event"...I just didn't like the "Fight" part of the song that's why...Leif Garrett....ugh!! Some of Manillow's stuff is ok...but just not Copacabana for me....
My "let's-grab-a-beer-now" songs, off the top of my head:
Boogie Oogie Oogie-Taste of Honey...I never warmed up to it (I probably liked it for the first 2 weeks only...)
La Bamba- Antonia Rodriguez...great for the first 4 minutes, then it goes on WAY too long
Gimme Just a Little More Time-Angela Clemmons...too-sugary, too-cutesy disco, yuck!
Que Sera Mi Vida-Gibson Bros...GREAT song but why does Mr. Gibson brother HAVE TO SHOUT AND SCREAM THE LYRICS?
Celebration-Kool & Gang- you couldn't escape from it, it was/is EVERYWHERE!! Overplay killed it for me
Remember Me/Ain't No Mountain- Boystown Gang- see "Boogie Oogie" above...
Otherwise I'd be dancin the whole night through...
we can fly...above the sky...
.. these very same tunes killed disco .. when the genre became slick, commercial & soul-less the disco bubble soon burst .. disco started in the early to mid 70s, riding on the back of the soulful Philly sound .. it was uptempo soul that created disco .. and it was this commercial rubbish that destroyed it ..
strange forum topic; i thought the forums were supposed to be conduits throught which to spread love and understanding, as opposed to talking about what didn't impress us etc. oh well, i reckon ray charles was right.
You're so right doctor. Every now & again on this site you can guarantee a thread where people have to say what disco they don't like & by the end of it you begin to doubt why many people bother visiting places like this at all!:icon_confused: It just goes to show how there were many different styles of disco music & how tastes can differ quite dramatically. It all makes life intersting doesn't it?:icon_mrgreen:
...ya gotta beat the street......
Boogie Doctor, San, both of you a are making an interesting remark.
That's the problem we are facing right now. Do we steer the board in an overall positive direction or do we tolerate discussions that are criticising discorecords/artists???? It's not easy you know, especially not for Bernie and the moderators!
Some say it's a discussion board which means that everybody can say what they want about something (within limits of course), other members are calling for a very strict policy on the negative vibes.
What do we do? Maybe it's a good thing that the community decides on this subject! GuyZ, girlZ????? It's your call :icon_idea:
Hey, it's a discussion board!And look everyone , we're discussing!
For instance, Sandra likes the poppy end of disco, whereas others like Ashley don't. Two opinions that's all ..it doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong ( I'm zipping my lips now !)
As long as no one one is being overtly nasty or personal, as long as no one is stating opinion as fact or making sweeping unfounded statements, seems the whole thing is tootling along just fine.
One record that made me rushing screaming from the dancefloor/bar to the cottage/bar was Seventh Avenue's 'Loves Gone Mad' which I can't bear.
But I wonder which of the examples mentioned in were actually heard in context as new records ? Some of them certainly haven't worn well twenty plus years on but were MASSIVE as new records !
I definitely do not think quashing any critical or negative sentiment would be the most judicious thing to do. People must be allowed to voice their opinions, in whatver shape or form they take. I just found it slightly disappointing that people were spending time and energy disparaging disco when they could be praising it!
Lots of peace and love,
The Boogie Doctor
