I’m a big fan of 80’s Alternative Dance Music (especially extended versions) and wanted to share some with you.
For those who may not know, alternative dance music is usually darker, but still keeps a beat. It is usually more rock than disco, yet it still fits in the dance club scene.
Also known as Cerrone’s muse, and now getting co-writing credits for a lot of his work, Lene Lovich is a favorite in this genre. She was known in the USA for Lucky Number and New Toy, but she was bigger in Europe and known for other songs too.
It’s You, Only You (Mein Schmerz) is my favorite of hers. It’s forever haunting with that Good, Bad and Ugly-like penny whistle going through it. And the moans at the end add to the cacophony of pain she is expressing. “Mein Schmerz” translates to “my pain”, but I believe in this sense, it means my heartache.
I have included the video and a sample of the intro and the break from the extended version.

Another great one!
Granted Lene may have only had a couple songs recognizable by the general public here in the U.S., but for many of us -we knew everything she put out & was quite popular with the new wave crowd.
This is a great song & I love the yells at the end. Bird Song is another good, yet freaky one from her!
