    Hey Whatcha Got...Hey Whatcha Doin'????

I'm listening to my bootleg copy of The Ethel Merman Disco Album. That refrain in my post title is from Cole Porter's "Something For The Boys"...well, I don't think ol' Cole actually wrote that...but some arranger DID!!! (was it Peter Matz of early Barbra fame???) There are no liner notes on this bootlegged baby.

Just some campy FFFFUN!!!! No one has asked me to turn it off yet!!! Or even asked what it is!!!!

Now I must pose the question:

Which would be the most torture for your sensitive classy disco-ONLY ears? "Ethel does Disco" OR "Love Shack"????

If you're gonna give me a choice of 2......eeerrrrrr.......without knowing it I'd have to plump for Ethel.
PLEASE REALIZE THIS IS A PERSONAL THING - YOUR TASTE WILL BE DIFFERENT I'm just stating, that's all.
Otherwise, Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drums Corps, Constandidos stuff, El Coco, Disco Tex etc, etc, etc. Anything that's corny/cheesy pretentiously Orchestral or is a metronomically dull thud thud thud thud.
There I've probably insulted everybody with that lot except a few funky folk or those that appreciate what swing is.
    It's all about the gaps.

I can supply you with cover scans if you wish. As if the album wasn't bad enough to begin with, Paul Jabara's comments add another dimension to the horror.

I'm just not getting it. It was funny for about 30 seconds, and then I realized "Hey... this really sucks!!" :x

No one has asked me to turn it off yet!!!
Is that because they all ran to the washroom?

Now I must pose the question:

That depends on how the question is interpreted. Right now, I'd say I hate "Love Shack" more, simply because I am continually subjected to it... whereas I'm the only person I know who has a copy of TEMDA, and the only time I ever pull it out is at the insistence of a curious visitor (oh, and by the way, 30 seconds is inevitably more than enough to satisfy their desire to hear it).

But if I had to listen to one every single day, I'd have to go with TEMDA as being the most painful. I can at least see why people would enjoy "Love Shack". And I've certainly heard far worse. But TEMDA, on the other hand, is aural plutonium.

How about Gloria Gaynor doing "Night and Day." now that was classically BAD DISCO!

    Dear Friends!
I really love this coverversions in Disco from the past...like
ETHEL MERMAN or GLORIA GAYNOR´s "As Tears Go By"...
    what about WESTSIDE STRUTTERS"The Man I Love"...this
    is a wonderful song in a heavy-bassline. CLAUDJA BARRY´s
"I Wanna Be Loved By You"...the Gays in Disco-Heaven
    scream for this song.
The percussive Version from AMII STEWART "Light My Fire
(137 Disco Heaven)"...so much better than the original.
    Flamboyant Dance on the DiscoVolcano...
VIOLA WILLS with "Gonna Get...", "If You Could Read My Mind",
"If You Leave Me Now", "Stormy Weather"...
I think a real DiscoDiva has to do the old golden classic-tunes...

frank sinatra's disco version of "night and day" is far more terrifying than the gloria gaynor version.

Yeah, Barry I have to agree with ya. When Jeff put the disco Sinatra version of "Night & Day" as a mystery song on one of his CDs for me--I recognized the Sinatra voice--but figured it had to be Frankie Jr.--probably recorded with a gun at his temple during his kidnapping escapade. Sinatra never sounded so ill at ease on record --like John Gotti was calling in a favor. Did a relative of Gotti's produce that little disaster???? !!!

    Hmmmm...I'm just...well you know. :P

what was Paul Jabara's involvement in this? I always wondered who were the producers and arrangers on this album.

I've only ever heard of it although I think I heard "Show Business" once many many years ago.

Paul Jabara did the liner notes for Ethel's Disco LP; Peter Matz (arranged all the early Barbra LPs) did the arrangements, I think. I'm not sure who produced...maybe Peter Matz, also???

Amanda Lear singing ANYTHING is enough to make me wish I were deaf. I know a lot of you like her, but wow, I will never get her.

Better I should listen to "Love Shack" as performed by Ethel Merman! :P

Having never heard "Love Shack" (I should have asked all of you what the heck you've been ranting about) and having been subjected to Ethel once to often, I'll take the "Love Shack" train. In my heart, I know nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, could turn my stomach quicker than hearing her scream that god-awful "There's no business like show business...".

They could use this album to torture prisonsers into confessing. :x  :x
