It's just that Wow doesn't seem to realize that this is a site primarily dedicated to the discussion of 'Classic Disco' from the era '74 to '87, so that most of the posters are going to be older than him and have real life experience of the era in question. His time is now, so of course he's going to think we're old farts with our heads buried in the sand. That's exactly what I thought of my father's attitude to the Beatles and his harping on about 'the good old days'.

Wow: When I say everything today is crap I am generalising. What I mean is something like " 5% of the music I hear today is to my liking". So, there's the odd tune that catches my ear, but back in the '70s/'80s the percentage might have been more like 30% or 40% of the music. That was my time That's the difference. Now, What am I going to think was/is better? Now or then?

I listened to 1Xtra last night for about 45 minutes from 12.15-1.00 am. It was a 'live' DJ set (recorded Saturday) from a club and what I heard was part of the warm up set. I guess the music was fairly underground, but have no way of knowing. There was one record that really caught my ear and one other that made me listen more intently. The guy doing the mixing was spinning a new record every 2 minutes or so and the MC was really into verbal diarrhoea. Not much has changed there then. What struck me most, was that to my now untrained ears, nearly every record had exactly the same rhythm pattern and feel, except the 2 that made my ears prick up.
Do I know the titles of the 2 records that interested me? Nope. Will I ever? I doubt it. Do I care? Nope, I can live without it.

You are all a wonderful advert for this site and for any new people who visit/join it! (NOT!!!!!)
Especially that 'Quinny' idiot who is the most arrogant arsehole i've ever came across and seems to think he and his 'mates' own this site and know everything!
Not that i have have to explain myself to tosspots like you lot but i will explain myself very slowly for the benefit of the hard of thinking!
Once again- I am huge fan of the type of stuff you people are obsessed with, disco/funk etc etc...... and i go out of my way to collect/buy loads of the stuff! I certainly woul'dnt waste my money on stuff i didn't want/like so that must say something!
Secondly i am also a fan of up to date stuff and personaly think that it is just as good as the old stuff (and that is not an age thing!) to suggest other wise is patronising and an insult to my intelligence!

I 'prick' consciences maybe, that's what may erk some. Otherwise I'm as straight as an arrow. No doubletalk or hidden agendas. Just plain and to the point. I try to talk as I find it, nothing else and I always type with a smile on my face. Now, if you want to rationally discuss, reply, if you don't fair enough.
BTW: Who buys records they don't want or don't like? :roll:

Thats exactly what i try and do as well on here, wake up peoples narrow minded minds to the quality music that is out there today as well as celebrate the disco era which goes without saying was a wonderful era!
Another thing which really puzzles me! why is it the case that people who slag off modern music always seem to think that they know best and know what they are talking about and yet at the same time, anyone who is a fan of modern music and has the ordasity to slag off older music, doesn't know what they are talking about and doesn't know best? I find that very bizzare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For anyone to say its an age thing is talking crap!

You say f.ex. the Black Science Orchestra track is crap? CRAP?! Most definitely not, hell no! Have you actually heard any of those records listed above ? Should you be subjected to them on a flashing floor or any floor I think you'd start to itch, then shake and then proceed to bop the night away - unless, horrors... - you really are too old to dance. Disco or not, the BSO for one sounds absolutely wonderful. And in fact it DOES sound a lot like Disco to many ears :-)

Jussik: I was not referring to ANY of the tracks. If you care to read all I write you'd see that I like probably 5% (maybe more)of what I hear. I don't dismiss today's dance music totally. However, I don't go out looking for it, I have no need to. I have other things that give me a warm glow.

I was ever so pleased to see a good friend of mine last night who is even better at winding people up and upsetting them. And he's a professor and very good jazz pianist!! It's got to the stage where it seems like he can't do a gig without getting glares from someone in the band. Yet he's a lovely person if you bother to get to know him (just like me :) ).

I have been reading the debate that has gone to and fro on this thread and the Greg Edward's show about new music ...

Suffice to say, as I said before, I like both!!

A couple of points on the Greg Edwards debate to be re-iterated because they don't seem to have been picked up..... Greg does play new music on the show!! He plays a lot of new jazz stuff every week.... Wow - you make it sound as if between every record he is going purple in the face and slagging off new music. That is not the case - I guess he will make the odd comment but no more ...

I prefer the Seventies age – not only disco, but also soul funk and jazz - because I was 16 and it opened up a new world for me. Not ageism but pure economic theory – if a consumer purchases a product, he will get most economic utility from that product the first time, and after that the economic utility derived will diminish. IMHO, I don’t think you will ever be able to re-create the depth and meaning of Serious Seventies SOUL. Donny Hathaway. David Ruffin. The Philly sound. But that is my own opinion! That doesn’t mean I don’t like today’s music at all. Far from it! (As I now explain…)

My main point in this post is to comment on how I keep up with the current scene and what I think of it ... Plain reasoned debate ...

It is more difficult for me to keep up with the current music, simply because I don't go clubbing any more. That's not an age thing - it's my choice... Family for me!!

But because in London there is such a lot of good music around that can be sourced from the radio. I am able to keep up reasanably well. I can't listen to all the shows that play the new music every week but I will manage to listen at least once or twice a month.... The best for me is Robbie Vincent’s Sunday morning Jazz FM show with one hour of good new soul music, plus Norman Jay’s Giant 45 on Sunday evenings (when I am not too busy)…

Listening closely to some of the soulful garage music that Norman played a couple of weeks ago, which I captured on MD, I must admit, Jussik and Wow, you have a valid point. Yesterday, I happened to have the MD in my bag so I gave it a serious listen on the train home, bearing all your comments in mind … In particular I really enjoyed D.Wynn & The R-Tyme - Love In Music on a US KMS Records 12". Do you know it?? It sums up everything that is good for me, an ex-clubber, about the current scene.

I like this style of music essentially for the really crisp and punchy bass and percussion lines. Superb! With today’s technology they are much sharper than in the Seventies. And when the fantastic conga percussion breaks come in on this record, you are straight back into the disco thing and it is wonderful!! It would be really great to dance to that record in a club!

Two tracks I really like this year are from Stereo Sushi 2 - Choruroy Music / Fine Cognac and Mondo Grosso / Star Suite. Both have those superb crisp and punchy bass and percussion lines. Plus the first one has that glorious haunting sax floating over the top, and the second one has some deep and interesting lyrics to boot. As good as anything I have ever heard!

So, for me, it’s a good blast from the Seventies plus a little bit of the new stuff! :D :D

You're about 9 years younger than me, so even you haven't reached my stage of senility and even greater family ties. To me, it IS an age thing (the ages of man). For exactly the reasons you stated, keeping up with the latest sounds does take a back seat. By just saying it was an age thing I was being lazy, I guess. I imagined that everyone would know what I meant without having to dot the I's and cross the T's. Thankyou for doing that and bringing some sanity back into this thread.

Jazz: It's one of the things you can't escape in life, no matter how many face lifts, tummy tucks and Botox remedies one may seek. I bet hitting 40 has brought some things into sharper focus, even if none of us care to admit it? However taxes are another question (you should know). As for death, who knows, liquid Nitrogen may be our salvation, or not? So maybe it ought to be " Getting old is the only certainty in life ".

Just a response to your message mate about the comments you made about Greg Edwards, with due respect , i have to disagree! :(
As i've already said b4, i listen to his show every week and enjoy it very much and all the tunes he plays etc...
But it amazes me how week in/week out he is constantly slagging off new music in whatever context he sees fit! This does'nt stop me listening to and enjoying his show at all, but to be honest i am amazed how his bosses at Jazz FM let him get away with all the constant slagging off he does! I know if i was his boss i would tell him to seriously pack it in and get on with what he does best without the need for all the constant slagging off! I really do think he has an over inflated opinion of his own self importance and what gives him the right to play judge & jury with modern music? :o
You say that he does play occasional new music here and there, but when he does you can just imagine him biting his lip whilst he's playing it and then when he goes back to playing a disco track etc.. you can sense the relief and happiness in his voice,it really is rediculous! :evil:
Just imagine if a modern dj/radio presenter, whose show played new house/garage music in the same way as Greg's show plays disco etc.. just imagine if that presenter spent the best part of his/her radio show constantly slagging off disco music and how rubbish it was compared to today's wonderful new music in the same way as Greg does,vise versa! I can just imagine the uproar there would be from the likes of Greg and people alike him saying, who the hell does that presenter think he/she is and what do they know etc etc.. :roll:
I cant stress enough how much i do like Greg's show and his music etc... but there is just no need for his slagging off of new music, its unnecessery,unfair and an injustice to quality music that is around today! :D

mmmmmmmmm..........................i only caught the hour of the show between 11-12 (boogie hour) and the only criticisim i heard was of teenagers with fireworks! (there's always something) - but i find it rather odd that he has gone quiet all of a sudden with his criticisms of modern music - not that i am suggesting conspiracy therories or anything like that! :-?
