Firstly before i say all this, can i just stress that i do enjoy listening to Greg's show and the tunes he play's etc..
Now for the BUT!
What i'm about to say now, i say with no disrespect to him and with the upmost due-respect!
Why is Greg so critical about music today? Every time i listen to his show and he's talking about the tunes he's playing etc..he then always seems to refer to music today in some context and how 'not the same/not what it used to be/how bad it is' compared to the 'wonderful original funk/disco' music he plays/used to play!
I know Greg is getting on a bit in his age and with due respect to him, i really think he needs to get off his high horse somewhat and get out of the timewarp he's stuck in!
As i've said before on this web site, i am a fan of the disco/rare groove/funk sound of the 70's/80's and enjoy alot of the stuff that Greg plays on his show, but i've also said before on here on numerous occasions that there is just as much quality music around today as there always has been (in my opinion, even more of it!) the only difference is that it is all not as mainstream as it used to be in Greg's era! (late 70's etc..)
I am a fan of the U.K and U.S.A underground house & garage music scenes and there is just as much quality/soulful/funky music around as there was back in that era, but that's exactly what the music is 'underground' and not in the mainstream, as alot of the tunes that Greg plays were back in his era!
I realize there was also a huge underground scene back in that era as well-but in cannot be compared to the size of the underground scene today!
With due respect to Greg and nothing against him personally, he seems to represent a very narrow minded bunch of people in today's society with the misguided idea that dance/disco music was only good back in that era and that somehow today's music is rubbish by them standards, which in my opinion is a total injustice and could'nt be any furthur from the truth!

Wow: Once you're double your present age you may well feel the same way. When you're older you will, for sure, look back at a certain time frame and say to yourself "that was a golden age". None of us ever think we'll end up sounding like our fathers, but we nearly all do!
I guess Greg is saying what the majority of his listenership wants to hear. They are possibly more anti new records than he is. It's easy to understand really.

Please dont patronise me about my age, i may be 27 but i certainly know my music from past and present and whilst i'm a huge fan of the older disco/rare groove/soul music etc... I also know that there is also a fantastic music scene out there today as there always has been and no doubt still will be when i'm 'Double my age!'
With due respect, the likes of yourself and Greg of Jazz FM and alot of other 'anti music today' type of people, should take your heads out of the sand and appreciate alot of the good quality music that is around today, just as there was all them years ago!

Wow: If you can't accept that you're going to change O.K. I was not trying to patronise you, just tell it like it is (for the vast majority of people). Remember I was young once upon a time, too. Try to accept that I have opinions too.

If you listen to the first jazz hour and the third soul hour you will find that Greg regularly spins new tunes every week.
But when it comes down to the "get down and boogie" hour Greg plays what the Funkateers want - the old stuff. (He does break the odd new tune now and then). Remember, Wow, most of us have been around with him for 25 years of more. The point is - I don't think you can ever re-capture that magic of your formative years, which was for me when I first hit the discos in 77 - 80 and onwards ... They were the best - the places, the music, the people, the style etc. That is why we all enjoy the Seventies music the best - for all those memories.
But that is not to say that I don't dislike today's music, because I always make an effort to keep up with the new stuff and I agree - there is plenty of good underground stuff around.. When I was a Funkateer I always vowed to keep up with the current records, and that is what I have always done ...
But for me personally you can't beat those Disco Days!!! :D

Oh dear! what can of worms have i opened here? hahah
Firstly may i just stress that of course people are entitled to their opinions-weather it be music or anything else, as much as i am!
Of course Greg Edwards from Jazz FM is entitled to his opinions also, but my opinion is that he and people who think alike him are being very narrow minded and seem to think that only their type of music (disco etc..) from years ago, is the best and music from today is garbage-which is unfair/narrow minded and an injustice to alot of quality music that is out there today!
The worst people in my opinion for being narrow minded are those who are obsessed with 60's Northern Soul music,they just think that anything other than "rare northern soul" is rubbish which is just rediculous in my opinion (i do like northern soul music myself b4 any1 says anything!)
In my opinion,soul/disco/jazz funk/rare groove and in the last 15 years or so house/garage music has always been wonderful and i'm 100% certain it'll still be wonderful and i'll still be enjoying new tunes in 20/30 odd years time! (If God spares me)
As far as Greg Edwards is concerned, i don't mean any disrespect to him whatsoever because i enjoy his show and the tunes he plays very much, i only wish he would stop being so negative and critical about music today, he just seems to represent a following of people who are filled with bitterness and resentment about today's music scene which really is uneccessary and petty! If these people who are so critical of today's music maybe just opened their eyes a bit more to what is actually out there then maybe you would all be pleasantly suprised and would eat humble pie in the process!
I assume you all remember the 'Disco Sucks' demonstrations that took place in the late 70's, when people were protesting about about how "rubbish" disco music was and people were smashing up records in protest! now, 20 odd years later-disco music is fondly remembered and celebrated as wonderful/classic music and these days people are doing the same (well not demonstrating exactly) with today's music-strange isn't it?????
I find it funny when people say "oh you cant beat the disco days" etc.. well i personally think that the current house and garage music scenes in the U.K/U.S.A are a million times better than the disco days/scene and the music is in a different league/quality than disco music, but that does'nt mean i am not a fan of 70's/80's disco/rare groove etc.. music, coz i am a fan 100%, and collect/buy loads of the stuff very often!
Maybe i'm just more of an open minded person than others, but to say to anyone-they must think the way they do coz of their age really is patronising and an insult to their intelligence!

Wow: I think your missing one point. There's every damned station in existence playing current dance music and plenty of it. Jeez, 1Xtra is dedicated to virtually nothing but, so please don't deny us one or two little shows per week that partly go to satisfy our needs.
Why do you feel patronised by Greg Edwards? When he talks about the good old 'uns he's talking specifically with people of roughly my age in mind. You'll understand a lot more one day. That's not condescending, just the plain truth.
It must be great to be 27 and so cock sure of yourself. :lol:

Once again for the hard of thinking, coz maybe when you get older as a lot of people are on here, the amount of brain cells in your head reduces which is properbly the case with Quinny!
I am a huge fan of Greg Edwards and think he is an excellent dj/presenter and plays excellent soul/boogie tunes etc.. and i listen to his show every week!
My only gripe with him is that i am sick to death of him constantly slagging of modern music week in/week out, he really has not got a decent word to say and he is like alot of people on this site, so filled up with bitterness and resentment-when what is the point of feeling like that? it really is not good for your health eh Quinny?!

Quinny, i certainly do not deny you the pleasure of the show you enjoy, i enjoy the same show funnily enough!
You are missing my point as well, my point is that i wish Greg Edwards (and yourself for that matter), but more so Greg because he has the radio show, would just get on with what he does best without constantly slagging off modern music which he does week in/week out and it really is uneccessery/unfair and an insult/injustice to quality music that is out there today!

One more thing Quinny, i dont know how old you are but i would ASSUME that you properbly double what age i am (thats just an assumption) based on what you say!
On that basis-you say i'll 'understand one day', well i pray and hope that when that 'one day' comes that i dont feel as bitter and resentful about the music scene at that time the way you do about music today!
I hope to God that i am still enjoying new music in 20/30 years time as i do with today's music scene and as i do with the music scenes from many years ago (disco etc...), I am pretty optimistic (if God spares me), that i'll still be enjoying new music in 20/30 years time!!!

Wow: I didn't know I was bitter and resentful of the music scene today. Oh well, that's an eye opener.
Maybe my contention that 'pop' music is best if it only appeals to the young, has some validity. I feel that's a pretty intelligent view. I'd have hated it if my parents loved Jimi Hendrix when I was really into him. What would I have had to rebel against then? Think about it for a while. Perhaps it's my realization that I'm viewed as part of the establishment now that makes me happy that you've got something I wouldn't like. Maybe the same goes for Greg? Maybe he's merely enforcing the establishment view and it's meant to piss you off!
I'm just growing old gracefully by accepting some of life's truths.

The 'establishment' doesn't tell me what music i can and cant like, i make up my own mind! If i like it, i have it/listen to it, if i dont like it, i dont have it/dont listen to it-simple! regardless of the 'establishments view'! :
My own view is that i am a huge fan of the type of music you are into (or else i would'nt be on this site!)
I am also at the same time a huge fan of modern underground house/garage music!
I am also a fan of Greg Edwards,his show and the music he plays!
My only wish is that Greg would stop all his constant slagging off coz i do not agree with his slagging off! (that is not to say he is not entitled to his view!) of course he is/as is anyone else/as i am myself - what a wonderful democracy we live in! :D

Greg Edwards' show seems to have disappeared off Jazz FM. Does anyone know whether he has got a show somewhere else, and/or why he left Jazz FM? He now seems to be replaced by Tony Blackburn.

Darrens: Greg was given a Sunday afternoon slot, did one show and then resigned from Jazz FM. I don't know if he's got another show anywhere else. I miss The Bridge even though I only got to listen to it for a couple of months before it was axed.
