    Rokotto

No its not a cheese, but the name of a disco/funk group from the late 70's who were featured on TV this week performing their minor hit from 1977 called 'Boogie On Up'. Has anyone any info on Rokotto as I thought the record was very good but I've never heard it b4 & theyre from the UK surprisingly.

Also on 'TOTP2' this week were the late great Gwen Guthrie & Raw Silk from 1986 & 1982 respectively. How fabulous this was as I love both these acts & I'd never seen either of them on TV b4. Did anyone else see the show this week; it gets better every week!

Steely: I only ever saw 2 records by them, one being 'Boogie On Up'. They were on State Records which had Delegation, Mac & Katie Sissoon?, and the odd true disco release (Camouflage?). Don't know too much about Rokotto except that they were a hot band around '76/'77. Apparently they made cover versions of 'Brick House' and 'Shack Up' but I never heard them. I always thought 'Hi Tension' had wee bits of 'Boogie On Up' in it. How about you? Don't you think the guy with the walking stick looked a tad tripped out, eh?
Just for your interest:State Records is/was owned by Wayne Bickerton who was a fairly well known independant producer from the early '70s. He signed a local Southampton band 'Iguana' who had one self titled album on Polydor (Lion in the US) with him (it was really funky for white boys). They later became the Jess Roden Band with excellently soulful Jess Roden on vocals and recorded several albums for Island.

Ta 4 that info Q. Yes, that track is a wee bit in the Hi Tension mould I have to say. I wonder if Rokotto's records will soon be fetching silly money & heavily in demand in the same way as some of Delegation's records are?

No I didn't see Raw Silk on TOTP2 ....But I never knew that Do It To The Music was a chart hit! And such a good club record too!

You see - 1981/82 I spent studying in out Germany, and I did not keep up with the pop charts in the UK ...

Can you recall from memory which other disco records charted in the UK around that time? I think Get Down On It was very successful coz that was around Xmas 1981 when I came home f or the festive period ...

Cut and pasted from Wow's similar thread!! Feeling happier now, Steely??

BTW I remember the Rokotto record being around in 1977 but I guess I didn't take much notice of it .....
If it moves - funk it!!
