I listen to Jazz FM here in Brussels on the ASTRA 2 Satellite and I totally agree with you about the poor sound quality but at least it is in stereo, unlike my favourite radio on this bird, Solar Radio.

For the very first time I'm able to listen to this radio programme. It's right in the socket for me, but I do have one complaint.
The sound quality is awful compared to the other radio and TV broadcasts through my digibox. This could explain why others have thought some of the tracks played to be slightly different mixes. To me it sounds like some very poor EQ is being applied and poor compression which is not tracking equally on both channels. It sounds out of phase, like a cassette tape where the replay heads are not quite aligned the same as the heads that recorded the tape and the dolby NR is slightly misaligned.
Can anyone add any comments to my inference.

Quinny, why cant u listen to it on a normal radio/ tuner?
...ya gotta beat the street......
Steely: Jazz FM is not available in Southampton on FM.
Quinny, I understand now. I assumed u could pick up the London station from there. Hampshire is further from london than I thought. (I'm such a northerner!)
...ya gotta beat the street......
I grew up in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, some 35 miles south of London. When I wanted to listen to Greg's Soul Sprectrum on Capital radio in the 70's my dad fixed me up with some thick copper wire for a super aerial which went from my portable cassette-radio and up across the ceiling. I could pick up Greg's show pretty well on a good day!
That same coppper wire is now coming out from the back of my tuner in my hi-fi system - and still doing a good job!! :D
If it moves - funk it!!
I'm thinking I may get much better reception if I had a better arial and/or newer tuner. My tuner is an old Sony tuner amp from 1978 or thereabouts. It's only in the past year that I've really got back into listening to radio (mostly for the jazz programmes), and quite frankly, I'm not that precious about sound quality, although this has begun to change somewhat. Do I wait for DAB to get even better, go the TV digibox route or buy a cheap and cheerful tuner knowing I'll replace it fairly soon?
Quinny,
As far as being able to pull in distant stations, don't get rid of your tuner just yet. Older tuners such as yours with a good antenna tend to perform better than some of the newer tuners out there. I used to have an old Sansui TU-417 tuner from around 79-80 that I foolishly ditched that pulled in distant stations better than my current Onkyo with digital this n' that. Wish I'd kept the old Sansui, but it was huge. Get a good antenna first.

Bernie: Thanks for the advice. I have been thinking about getting a feed from the top of the house. I don't think splitting the current feed would be good enough, 'cos TV aerials are very directional. We're in a bit of a hollow where I live and that doesn't help.
I reckon an aerial on the top probably sounds the best solution .... especially as you say you are in a hollow ....
BTW I also have a Sansui tuner - from 1984 - and it is still very good. I live on the edge of the Surrey Downs that come into South London, and have great views from the house - including a view of the Crystal Palace transmitter in the distance. Which means that I get very good TV and radio reception indeed. Which means that I am asking myself - do I need to upgrade to DAB just yet??
BTW How come you always get better radio reception in the car???
If it moves - funk it!!
I would urge any disco fan who is not just into Eurodisco and High Energy tracks to give this show a listen.
It helps if Jazz Funk is your bag, but overall, the style and substance of the programme are really great. I'm so glad I can tune into it these days.
When he plays Morning Noon and Night's Bite Your Granny you'll know who asked for it.
Is it true that his Friday night show comes to an end in January??
Delboy, I have it on good authority that Greg's show is moving to Sunday afternoons.
...ya gotta beat the street......
Shame!...and he won't be playing the same stuff in his new slot.
I'm going to miss it.
Sob, sob, sob. It's gone now.
Was it too jazzy for JazzFM? I certainly heard more jazz in the first hour than most other times I've tuned into the station.
Oh well, I'll just have to try and get my own radio show....if only.
What will he be playing in his new slot? I cant imagine him playing anything else.
...ya gotta beat the street......
On the last show (Friday) he was more or less saying "don't be so stupid to think that I'll be playing Disco, Funk and Jazz Funk on a Sunday afternoon". Probably soul, wallpaper jazz will be the diet I reckon. I'll just have to see if I can tune in next week between 1pm and 4pm.
There's always Craig Charles show on Fridays from 7pm - 10pm (repeated Saturday 6 - 9). It's usually got some damned good funky things in it with the odd Disco funk track (like Loose Joints 'Face' a few weeks back).
I have just found out the bad news ..... and I am well and truly gutted .....
Let us just hope that Greg's Friday night format will re-surface somewhere else in the very near future ... I for one will miss it terribly .....
Radio 3 perhaps??
If it moves - funk it!!
Had a quick listen to Gregs Friday night replacement and heard...
Only You - Praise
... and promptly switched off
All I can say is Greg...come back!!!!!!!!!
If it ain't funky - shove it!
Not so bad after all!
I managed to listen to some of Greg's Sunday afternoon show, and I am pleased to say that he was still going with the funky stuff! The is still some hope!
Some of the tunes I noted him playing were:
Cheryl Lynn - To Be Real
Maceo and the Macks - Cross The Tracks
Reuben Wilson - Got To Get Your Own
Idris Muhammed - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This?
Loose Ends - Hanging On A String
and he even mentioned that he was going to play the funky stuff in the middle hour!
Nice to see Greg still playing music with attitude!
BTW I've got Sky Digital arriving in two weeks' time, so I am looking forward to see what's on offer. I know for sure that one of the really good soul stations on the web - I think it is Solar Radio - is now on Sky Digital so I can't wait to check that out ... And Quinny I guess I'll be able to listen to the shows that you enjoy so much ... If you could enlighten me once again when and where they are on ...Cheers
If it moves - funk it!!
Well,
I see Jazz FM now have Tony Blackburn on between 17.00 and 20.00 GMT on Saturday evenings.
Not a substitute for Gregs show, but he does play some nice tunes.
Thanks Delboy - I shall give it a listen ...
BTW I checked out Solar Radio and is it available on Sky Digital Channel 879 (To the UK & Eire) and also on Astra 2B Satellite 28.2 degrees East, Transponder 33, 12.344Ghz Horizontal Polarisation, SR 27500, FEC 2/3. As well as on Solarradio.com
I remember Solar Radio well as a pirate in London in the 1980's. It is WELL WORTH checking out - if only it was on normal FM radio! Still only two weeks to wait and I can get it on Sky Digital!!
If it moves - funk it!!
Nothing wrong with it as I'm a big fan of Tony Blackburn & these acts but he is just a little obsessed with Change & Ashford & Simpson dont you find? However, that is one obsession that I find quite healthy!!
...ya gotta beat the street......
He does get around a bit does Tony!
He's got a new show called Sunday Soul on Classic Gold on Sunday mornings between 9am-1pmGMT
