I'm a new user of this site and am ecstatic that I no longer feel like a freak in my rural area. There aren't too many people in my current town who graduated high school in the late 70's and had much to do with disco beyond the radio. I've been feeling isolated til now.

One advantage of living in a rural area is the flea market scene. I found a vendor who bought out the vinyl from a DJ who was spinning in a nearby small city in the 70's and 80's. I've been in hog heaven! I also made some finds in the Goodwill.

Anyway, one find was a two record set of Salsoul artists. The records were not in their original sleeves. The labels list the song names but not the artists. Along with the expected First Choice, Silvetti, Double Exposure, Loleatta, Love Committee, and Vince Montana tracks are other cuts I can't identify. There are six songs to a side, mixed into a continuous play by Walter Gibbons. This appears to be a product for DJ's only.

I was wondering if this is a worthwhile find or is it simply a common item of minor interest. Any opinions would be enlightening.

let me ask you, are the songs the 12" or the radio edit versions? a lot of times in the late 70s, there would be special double album 12" inch version of a disco album for djs that would have the songs split into two records so that they get a louder, bass-laden groove to it...is that what you have?

also, does it have the title of the compilation such as "saturday night disco party"?

i hear you good on the rural vinyl advantage..heh! heh!...where are you located?

    with kind regards,

Sounds suspiciously like the 2 Walter Gibbons-remixed 12"ers the Dutch company Rams Horn distributed commercially in Europe during the mid-80's. In any case a good find.

These compilations are "Salsoul greatest 12" hits Vol. 1" (CA 1002) mixed by Tom Moulton & Walter Gibbons and "Disco Boogie" vol. 1 & 2 (SS 0102, SS 0101) with disco blendings by Walter Gibbons, originally out on Salsoul USA in 1978. Other Salsoul original compilations are:

"Saturday night disco party" (SA 8505)

    "Disco Madness" (SA 8518)

"We funk the best" (SA 8527)

"Larry Levan's greatest mixes" (SA 8533)

    To Giovanni:

Catalog numbers! I am most impressed. This foolproof route allowed for a positive I.D. I have the Disco Boogie Vol II discs. Although the songs are shortened to fit onto each side, I still think these are cool. Primarily because they have "disco blending," as the label says, by Walter Gibbons. I think his overhaul of "Just As Long As I Got You" is superb. Thanks for your help.

    To kelvy:

From what I'm hearing, flea markets may be the best source for vinyl-- the urban stores seem to be getting picked over. Here in central Penna, I've found Erotic Drum Band's "Pop Pop Shoo Wah," Karen Young's "Bring On The Boys," Salsoul Orch's "Seconds" and some others I'd never heard. I also found replacements for the records I stupidly sold off in yard sales when I fell prey to the shame of the Disco Sucks sentiment in the early 80's. My collection's bigger than it ever was in the 70's!
