Super Hard Funk Of The 70's 8

Just compiled another funk compilation CD from my MP3s using my scattergun approach :D :

    1 - 2001 - The Black Motion Picture Experience 1973
    2 - Abaco Dream - Life And Death In G And A 1969
3 - Earth Wind & Fire - Power 1973 (Put this on my last funk compilation but had glitches at the start so I copied it to this one)
    4 - Fatback Band - Yum Yum 1975
5 - Isaac Hayes - Joy 1973 (Nice piece of soulful funky music. Isaac Hayes is a legend!)
    6 - Isley Brothers - Gettin' Into Something 1970
7 - Junie - Granny's Funky Rolls Royce 1975 (I'm addicted to this song, I love the funky mid 70's Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster" style funk in this song with the infectious SUPERCOOL funky drum beat :D and Ohio Players hitting the high notes and the change of tone in the song, and Junie's from the Ohio Players too, and I love his impersonations of an old granny  . LOVE this song :D )
    8 - Ohio Players - Who'd She Coo 1976
9 - Oliver Sain - Bus Stop 1974 (Some cool British funk goes well in a funk compilation)
    10 - Politicians - Free Your Mind 1972
11 - Sound Experience - Devil With The Bust 1974
12 - Timmy Thomas - Funky Me 1972 (Does this guy use an electronic techno drum? If he does then he's way ahead of his time because it certainly pre-date's Kraftwerk's synthesized drums they invented in 1975. Great song.)
    13 - Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together 1972
14 - Universal Robot Band - Dance & Shake Your Tambourine 1976 (This group uses a similar style as Cloud One does in "Atmosphere Strut")
    15 - War - City Country City 1972
    16 - Beginning Of The End - Funky Nassau (Parts 1 & 2) 1971

    Hey FUNKY DUDE,

you surely deserve your nickname, my friend. This is a superior compilation of 70's soulful funky classics. I don't remember nobody here in this FORUM mentioning JUNIE or THE POLITICIANS.A few years ago I bought a great comp (as good as the one you made) called A SWEET TASTE OF WESTBOUND RECORDS. It opens with a great track by JUNIE, WALT'S THIRD TRIP, do you know this one? The comp has a great funky track by THE COUNTS, Rhythm Changes. I have their album on CD and it's a 70's funk classic.

About THE POLITICIANS: this group deserves a special mention here, since it was the house band for Holland-Dozier-Holland stable of record labels of the early 70's (HOT WAX, INVICTUS & MUSIC MERCHANT). THE POLITICIANS' soulful funky sound is very beautiful and distinctive. The band leader is McKinley Jackson, a legendary musician, songwriter, arranger and record producer. Sadly :( , these guys recorded just one album, but what an album it is :D ! THE POLITICIANS featuring MCKINLEY JACKSON was released in 1972 and it's a landmark of early 70's instrumental soul. It begins with a extra-funky track, PSYCHA-SOULA-FUNKADELIC. A classic from start to finish, this album was released on CD a few years ago. Lucky me, I have it in LP and CD. I recommend this one for every fan of 70's soul and funk. BTW, THE POLITICIANS released a few tracks on singles, like the great LOVE MACHINE (I played this song once in a SENHORES DO GROOVE party).

    Peace,

Zeca: I have to agree with you about the Politicians 'Love Machine' which is still one of my all time fave grooves and yes I have mentioned it here before. As a DJ, any record on Invictus or Hot Wax was greeted with heightened anticipation at the local record store, when at least once a week, I and my colleagues would give all the new releases a quick spin, to work out what was worth buying. Some records were listened to for all of a minute, others lasted 10 seconds, before being instantly accepted or rejected. You could normally tell within that short timeframe if it kicked or sucked.
Funky: Oliver Sain was NOT English, although 'Bus Stop' was on Contempo records over here and that is probably the label that 'broke' the record big at the time. If you could look closely at the label you would probably see 'licensed from ABET records USA' or something similar. As far as I know, Oliver Sain was biggish on the Jazz/Blues scene and Bus Stop was a record that just happened to cross over to the club scene. It was probably due to the guy who headed Contempo (and Blues & Soul Magazine, who later married Tamiko Jones?) getting an import and digging it so much.
Timmy Thomas: So far as I'm aware, the rhythm box used was the bog standard one that came with organ used (a Hammond of some description?) I'd have to have a look at one of his albums to be absolutely sure. Try to hear 'You're The Song I Always Wanted to Sing' if you get the chance, which was absolutely brilliant too. Sweet memories.

    FunkyDude,

Your musical taste rivals any 'homegrown' brother :) . Simply outstanding, plus you ALWAYS seem to have something that I missed.

BTW - I see you put War's City, Country, City on your list. Have you had the extreme pleasure of hearing the full length, 13+ minutes version? A classic, indeed.

Also, Isaac Hayes' Joy. 15:55 minutes of ecstasy. I've mentioned this song before. I've played the first minute of that song at a level where as the strings build they practically lift you off the floor! :D Black Moses astounds.
