Wow's 1979 rare grooves list volume 1

Brilliant selection of tracks from a great year but these are mainly disco & not what would generally be classed as 'rare groove'. I always thought rare groove means funky or jazzy stuff from the 70's that only had an underground following. Am I alone in thinking this here?

Steely: I've been waiting for more info on the rare groove scene from Wow, but none has been forthcoming. Shame 'cos it would be interesting to have a small insight at least.
I guess it just means what it says. Anything that didn't see the light of day or didn't get overly exposed to a dance floor for whatever reason. That's why I'm somewhat sceptical of these categories, cos it's something like part of the old Northern Soul scene, where lots of records became sought after and reverered just because they were rare. It's such a shame when the music becomes less important than the rareness of it. Personally, I think music isn't a commodity to be traded to the highest bidder and loathed the artificial nature of it. That's not to say that there weren't people in the scene who were honourable and were into it for the right reasons, but we all know what human nature is. For the same reasons, I refuse to get tangled up in the pursuit of HI-FI. The sound becomes more important than the music to some people. That just isn't the way it should be.
At the end of the day, isn't it a macho thing?

There seems somewhat of a debate going on as to what is the definition of 'rare groove'?
A few people have commented when i've done my 'rare groove lists' that some of the tunes cannot be classed as 'rare groove'.
Well as far as i'm concerned if the tune in question is a groovy/funky tune and it is very hard to find and not easy to come by then in my book it is a 'rare groove' as far as i'm concerned! :D

Wow: This is not a joke.
Is your definition the definitive one? Doesn't this more or less make disco as a whole a rare groove scene. The records are comparitively difficult to get hold of and quite often in relatively small numbers?
So please tell, is the scene about rareness or about music? I'd be interested to know.

No Quinny it does not make disco as a whole a rare groove scene! Alot of disco music is very easily available these days in your average record shop (HMV etc..)
But alot of disco music (namely the sort of tunes i display in my lists) are not easily available from your average record shop,and you would have to look harder/smarter and maybe furthur afield to find them (even then there would be no guarantees)
You ask is it about the music or rareness, it is about the music, but it doesn't alter the fact that alot of these songs are so God damn hard to come by!

Sorry, but I cannot square the circle in my own mind. If it's solely about the music and you profess that the records are good or even better, how come they didn't get more exposure when they were released? In my own mind, small label = small artist = probably inferior product (i.e. also rans). Remember, these were largely the days (the early '80s) when only the best artists got onto the major dance labels and even indie labels were run on major lines (i.e. generally, they weren't a guy in a garage or a bedroom, records cost serious money to make). It wasn't until House appeared in '86 that a lot of obscure product started to get exposure, and I couldn't honestly say that every House record I played was good. The fact that House was fashionably hot made the records playable, NOT their musical integrity. Do you see a parallel here?
Yes, there are quite a few records by unknown artists that made the disco charts and had exposure on the dance floors. So where does this leave the even rarer grooves that dominate your lists? I feel it's easier to justify them after the event 'cos they are not in direct competition with the best records released at the same time. For me there's a huge problem calling them anything other than workmanlike or average, 'cos logic dictates that they wouldn't be as rare as they are, had they been any good. There will always be the odd example that defies this rationale, but your lists contain hundreds. I hope you can see the dilemma and why I have a problem with it.
So, is it really about the music? I'm not too sure.
I could totally understand it if you were to say it's about avid record collecting. Now that's something completely different. :lol:

Personally, I let this matter to the acounters!!
Otherwise, I would have to say, ABBA is the one of the best, the biggest, the most sensacional music makers of the history!!!
