List-mania kicked in when I discovered the New Top 500 song list posted. As I glanced over the list, the first thought that occurred to me was how many of these recordings I've collected since I came to this website. (I won't let myself venture into thoughts about cost lest I come to some awful conclusion about how financially whimsical I've been in the last two years.) The second thought that I had was this: so many of the recordings that made the list are ones that are currently available on CD format. This begs the question, Are these songs-- many of them never popular hits except on club playlists-- available on CD because they are favorites of the disco customer, or are they on the Top 500 list because they have current exposure with CD buyers? Of course, I'm sure the truth is a combination of both scenarios, but it makes me wonder about archiving disco music. Is it possible that the recordings most remembered are the ones available in current technologies? Are record collectors so few in number that eventually the disco recordings available only in vinyl format will become all-but-forgotten? Such thoughts make me want to see more tracks in CD anthologies, but frustratingly, there don't seem to be too many record exec's catering to disco connoisseurs.
