I'm a little hesitant to even admit this, since it sounds pretty damn geeky  but several years ago I actually joined the Donna Summer Fan Club...

I was hoping for insider news, maybe swapping rare tracks and especially a constructive pursuit like a campaign to get her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Instead, the monthly/occasional newsletter had poems for Donna, fan artwork and a "news" column that usually read: "No new releases scheduled." (Need I add that DiscoMusic.com is far more informative...?)

I have no idea if the same people are still involved in the club (or if it's even the same club; I guess there could be more than one), but if so, stuffing the ballot box to skew our Top 500 poll is the most ambitious thing this group has ever done!

    Ah Jeffy,

I should have known it was YOU all the time-- (c'mon over and skew the votes gang!!! Miss Summer Must BE #1!!!!!)-- Mr. Mainstream 23-of-my-25-songs-made-the-list!!!!!

Well,I have to admit I'm quite surprised to read that non-members were voting!!!! I thought that was a prerequisite--to at least fill out the membership listing.

Jeff, I feel it's your mission to inquire why your fellow members of the Donna Summer fanclub have such BAD or just LAME taste when it comes to Disco that is NOT Donna's.

They have no affinity for Mr. Moroder's OTHER productions--just "YMCA" and "Ring My Bell"?????!!!!!!

    I'm just askin'!!!!!

With all of the Donna re-releases here in the States, I cannot believe that we have yet to see any of her pre-"Love To Love You" material widely available anywhere (Hostage, Lady Of The Night). Does this have to do with licensing?? I'm curious to hear her very early material. Surprisingly, VH-1 did a "Behind The Music" (lame) special on Donna, and included clips her appearing on some European variety shows in 1973-74 singing those early songs. How they got those clips I haven't the foggiest idea.

I often see cheap compilations with the same songs in different order, none of them hits. One of them appears in AllMusic.com with the title "Shout it out" (Magnum, 1996). Here's the list:

    1. Fun Street (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 5:15
    2. Little Marie (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 3:07
    3. Shout It Out (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 3:32
    4. They Can't Take Away Our Music (Allen/Brown/Dickerson/Goldstein/Jordan/Levitin/Miller/Scott) - 6:30
    5. Back off Boogaloo (Starr) - 3:38
    6. Jeannie (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 3:47
    7. Nice to See You (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 3:34
    8. Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) (DeCarlo/Frashuer/Leka) - 3:52
    9. Do What Mother Do (Marvos/Palmer-James) - 4:02

Are this early pre-disco material, or something from the obscure mid-Eighties, or what?
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Nano: this is that demo tape that she did in the early 70s. Although released under a dozen different titles, it only comes in two flavours: the original, and a version remixed in the 80s.

The original recordings were never intended for commercial release. However, Donna does not own the rights to them, so she has no say on how they are marketed.

As I said before in another thread -- If you simply must have everything Donna, don't pay a lot for these. You should be able to get both versions for fairly cheap, i.e. much less than any of her real albums.
