Hi,
anyone know the very first 12" we have had this debate ove here in the UK for some time,
Being on a lot of Record Company mailing lists in the 70's i did get sent D.J.only 12", but the first commercially released 12" in the U.K i remember seeing was Boney M. "Daddy Cool"
In the United States, the first Commercially available 12" single for the public to buy, I'm not speaking of promo 12" singles, was "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure on Salsoul.
The very very first 12 inch was Al Downing's "I'll be holding on".
Legend has it Tom Moulton had finished mixing it in his studio one friday afternoon and wanted a few copies pressed to test it in the clubs over the weekend. The studio didn't have any 7 inch wax left so Tom got his engineer to press it on 12 inch wax. When they played it back the sound was amazing and thus the 12 inch single was born etc etc. Following on from that the first promo 12 inch (ie pressed for DJ's only in v limited quantities) is generally considered to be "Swearin to God" by Frankie Valli (the original 20th century version) and of course the first commercial 12 inch was 10%....
How about Donna Summer "Love to Love you baby"...that was around '76 wasn't it? The 12" I'm referring to is the one in which the cover opens out like a book and the record is in the separate sleeve.
I always thought that the first commercially released 12" in the UK was Black is Black - La Belle Epoque, in late 1976 on the EMI label.

I think you'll find that "Daddy Cool" came out in December 76' and "Black Is Black" on Harvest in September 77'.

I'm not sure about the first commercial UK 12 but I do have a few promo UK 12's from 1975 ie Herbie Mann - Hijack, Ben E King - Supernatural thing and Ernie Bush - Breakaway to name but 3....
The Herbie Mann & Ben E. King are promo's , i had loads of stuff sent from W.E.A. in the mid 70's including U.S. Disco Pool promo's. The Ernie Bush was as far as i remember on Contempo who didn't release commercial 12" till a much later date.
Hmm - so many differing opinions...............so here's mine![]()
