Well, all this discussion of all the cool new music made me go back to the last time I felt compelled to make a tape of DANCE MUSIC. I made this for myself and also for my niece and nephew (I'm trying to expose them to good stuff). So far, so good.

So this was what I liked enough to use:

    MUSIC: DANCE WITH ME

    SIDE A:

    1) MUSIC - Madonna
    2) DANCE WITH ME - Debelah Morgan
    3) I'M OUTTA LOVE - Anastacia
    4) ONE MORE TIME - Daft Punk
    5) TOGETHER AGAIN - Janet Jackson
    6) AMERICAN PIE - Madonna
    7) WAITING FOR TONIGHT - Jennifer Lopez
I WILL LOVE AGAIN - Lara Fabian
    9) LIVIN' FOR LOVE - Natalie Cole
    10) LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY - Katty B.
    11) DIVE IN THE POOL - Barry Harris w/ Pepper Mashay
    12) SHAKE ME - Mint Royale
    13) BLUE - Eiffel 65

    Side B:

    1) NEW YORK CITY BOY - Pet Shop Boys
    2) I FEEL LOVED - Depeche Mode
    3) IT FEELS SO GOOD - Sonique
    4) BINGO BANGO - Basement Jaxx
    5) DO YOU MISS ME - Jocelyn Enriquez
    6) LOVE IS ON OUR SIDE - Sonique
    7) I PUT A SPELL ON YOU - Sonique
CRYING AT THE DISCOTHEQUE - Alcazar
    9) SUNCHYME - Dario G.
    10) SILENCE - Delirium w/Sarah MacLachlan
    11) SKY FITS HEAVEN - Madonna
    12) SKY - Sonique
    13) I'M NOT IN LOVE - Olive

OK, there are some lesser cuts in there (remember it was for kids, think Eiffel 66!!!) BUT is there anything like these tunes out there that I might enjoy?

I have a short list of stuff waiting for more titles, so I can make another tape. BUT, it's taking a damn long time. I'm gonna post this, then list what I have waiting...

THE MUSIC'S NO GOOD WITHOUT YOU - Cher
THIS IS A SONG FOR THE LONELY - Cher
    REAL LOVE - Cher
YOU TAKE IT ALL - Cher
WISH I DIDN'T MISS YOU SO - Angie Stone
CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD - Kylie Minogue
WE ARE ALL MADE OF STARS - Moby
DAYS GO BY - Dirty Vegas
    HELLA GOOD - No Doubt
    MAKING OUT - No Doubt

That's about it---I have more titles on my rock list...BUT finding dance music I like is just not easy for me to find these days.

Earlier in the week I asked if anyone knew the Reina song "No One's Gonna Change You" and no one responded.

Give this one a listen. I think it's quite good. It's a vocal and there are no disco samples or rapping.

I wonder if Keefe is familiar with this song? He knows everything.

Mmmm... so you like the songs by Basement Jaxx and Daft Punk I posted earlier, Marky! See?
Don't complain, yours is a pretty nice compilation, maybe too song-oriented for today's trance-like tastes, but for me it's just OK.
I just listened to Alex Gopher's new album on Tower Records. He's techno and a bit commercial, but mostly he uses warm sounds and you can recognize some song structure. It's called "Alex Gopher with Demon presents Wuz". Try songs like "Use me" and "Without you". The French always swing!
    Did you try Mirwais?
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    Nano,

Well, I did see your post on stuff you like and I have bought Fatboy Slim (especially LOVE "Praise You"--but I think this is more of a rock song), Tricky (I don't know the one you mentioned, however), Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Propellerheads (well the one with Shirley Bassey "History Repeating", anyway) and I agree that Bjork's best album was "Debut". Her early ones do more for me than the later ones, sorry, Graham & Barry.

I don't have anything by St. Germain or Alex Gopher that I recall.

BUT, having said all that--none of this music has a fraction of the impact of a Giorgio/Donna production...I like some of this stuff...but the thrill is not there.

OK Marky, you can retire now
"Black steel" is in Tricky's first (and probably best) album "Maxinquaye" (1995). It's mostly trip-hop a lá Massive Attack, but that song has a rock feel that makes it very danceable. Other example is "Christiansands" in "Pre-millennium tension" (1996), but you probably know Tricky is basically an adventurer, and his records' usual rate is 1-2 hits vs. 8-10 misses.
You should try the Propellerheads album, it's really good and more cohesive that most DJ stuff. Certainly "On Their Majesty's Secret Service" is worth alone the price of the CD.
Having said that, it's obvious that dance records are now more ambient-oriented and it's difficult -if possible- to find songs that we can be passionate about... Plus, we're older, our taste is harder to please, and we have less time -and patience- to try new artists.
I certainly experience that with books and movies... I tend to look for new stuff of old favorites, and read a new author only with strong reccomendation. Also get disillusioned re-reading faves from the past, like when you see a TV series rerun and discover how ingénue you were to like it 20 years ago!
Maybe the worst is with those new rock acts I now look at as just distraction for testosterone-full teenagers... Like Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson or those that scream "whooooooa!" instead of singing something, just to prove they're harder than anyone. I mean, it's so obvious it's just stuff to jump to in your bedroom at full volume and feel different from your parents! I wonder how those in this forum who are parents feel about that...

    Hey Nano,

I DO have that Tricky CD "Maxinquaye"... guess I better pull it out and listen again, huh??? And, I think I have The Propellerheads doing "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"--was that on that David Arnott "Shaken--Not Stirred" CD???

    I can't keep track anymore!!!

Am I supposed to be ashamed to admit to liking the Cher tracks???

Hey Marky you made a good tape for your niece. I know/have some of the songs you compiled and I think they're very cool ones. Have you ever seen the video for New York City Boy? The Pet Shop Boys tried to recreate Studio 54. In fact they show you the original doors and 54 icons like: Disco Sally, Andy, Jerry, and Bianca.

BTW I just checked out Olive's "I'm Not In Love" it's a very good cover of an awesome song. I didn't even know it existed

I like much of the new rock that's out. As everyone here knows, I like such bands as Korn and Slipknot. Having grown up with punk and metal, it makes sense why those bands would appeal to me. I may be different than other people my age in that I want to hear new music, but that's part of what makes me an individual. That's one thing where I'm different than my fiancee. She's not interested in trying new music at all. But to each their own.

Marky: you'll find "At Her Majesty's..." in the only Prop... album available, "Decksanddrumsandrockandroll" (1998). (What's with these guy's names?)
Now that I think of it, "Black steel" is not much of a dancey song really. Really rockish, a bit wild like most Tricky's stuff. I like it, anyway.

Outsider: I understand your point (in fact I try to do the same with DJ/techno music). But Korn and Limp Bizkit are not the same, just as Marilyn Manson is not the same thing that Nine Inch Nails (which I don't like either, but at least did something different). Mr. Manson is truly the Kiss/Alice Cooper of the new generation, IMHO.
The last screaming bands that I really liked were the Pixies and Jane's Addiction, but I'm sure there must be some other younger ones...
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
