Marky - I want to point you in the direction of ONE particular track from a couple of years ago which I think has the spirit of oldskool disco but is completely fresh new & funky. The track: 'Moody' (Joey Negro Club Mix) by Sessomato. You can find it on Disco Kandi 2 comp (tho most of that comp is shite, this track stands out). If you don't wanna buy the CD you could surely download it from somewhere.

This track rocks! And there is a helluva lot of new stuff in a similarly funky vain. If you heard some of our local house/garage DJs here in Melbourne I guarantee you would not be able to leave the dancefloor!

Hey Borm2disco you mentioned one of my all time favorite house tracks.
I bought the 12" when it first came out in 2000, and it hasn't left my dj-bag since. I prefer the fantastic DUB ride version, being a dub-versions lover

But my alltime favorite house track still remains THE BOMB by the Bucketheads aka Kenny Dope (in the Armand van Helden re-edit), with its long intro; wonderfully well mixed with the long outro of Moody dub ride! :D

And yes, Joey Negro is an Englischman, also known as Jakatta, Dave Lee or SUNBURST BAND, wich is also featured on the Hedkandi album with the track "New York City Woman" Check out his Sunburst band album "Here Comes The Sunburst Band" Very disco! Very good! :)

All right - time to get involved in this.
I must say that I agree totally with born2disco's views on modern day dance music. It is a case of looking in the right places.
As disco/funk fans (as we all are around here, I suppose) there's no point in turning to all these tedious Ibiza compilations that sell by the truckload today. They are hard to ignore, though, since there all you see in the mainstream record shops.
I guess what we all really wanna see, is artists trying to reinvent the musical styles we all love. Artists who create new inputs and thereby are able the push the genre further.

Thankfully, these artists do exist. But you won't find them on any big selling compilations cd (mr Negro/Lee aside, I guess). I'm afraid we're mostly talkin US artists here. The likes of Blaze, MAW, Kerri Chandler and Jerome Sydenham.

But there's also good reason in turning to the german Compost label (Trüby trio and the Glücklich CD's) and some of the jazz house project coming out of Japan like Kyoto Jazz Massive. Also the "Respect Is Burning" collective (Dimitri From Paris a.o.) from France is worth mentioning.

I myself like most of the Hed Handi series a lot (especially the Stereo Sushi series). They have been able to steer clear of the obvious choices and personally they have introduced me to a lot of house & US based garage that I would never have discovered otherwise, not being a DJ myself. Even if they do put hit singles on their compilations, the mixes are always fresh and loads better than the well known versions.

Example: go to "Get get down" by Paul Johnson on Disco Kandi 1. Outstanding sample use of the old George Duke classic "Look What You Find" ('79) = way better version than the rather annoying original.

Mark Doyle of Jazz FM has done a great job methinks :)

So all 'n all: Quality dance music's out there if you're willing to search for it

Boy do I feel silly! Well that just shows where you get when you listen to idiots (my ex). I actually met Joey Negro briefly - shame it was too loud to hear his English accent.

I haven't been clubbing for ages and I miss it terribly. The only House night I have been to so far in Devon was in Teignmouth. I spoke to the DJ - Jazzwax? - and he said that there are not many house DJs in Devon. Unfortunately a large percentage of people here like Hard House, RnB and Garage. The explosion of House that I saw in Cardiff seems to have missed Devon!

Mondo Grosso - Star Suite . Love It :)

Also like their rather strange cover version of Hall & Oates' I can't go for that - the string arrangement is sublime. Guess this is what they call "Nu Jazz" nowadays. I just call it "good music".

Just realized there's a Stereo Sushi vol. 4 out. Gotta go get 'dat!

Just grab anything by Danny Tenaglia and you'll see that dance music is def. not dead. This man has been at the top of the dance music scene for over 20 years and keeps getting better. His mixing is flawless every week at Arc and can keep you dancing till the next afternoon! Other artists to look for, Deep Dish, Danny Howells, Saeed & Palash.... There's just so many that it is hard to sort through it all, but is def. there.

The stuff these guys do has nothing to do with soulful disco, maybe the hi nrg end. Tenaglia does the odd good thing (like his mix of "Finally" or his Daphine productions).

Tenaglia and hi nrg in the same sentence??? Obviously you've never seen him or heard him. He generally keeps it under 130 bpm. I wouldn't exactly call that hi nrg. There is a reason he is the most respected dj in the world. He has been 'The MAN' for the last 20 or so years... Who would you suggest is better at moving a crowd than DT? He is seen the world over as one of the best... and leatherman.. the forum is house & today's music, not soulful disco music. But then again you think Tenaglia's style is exactly the opposite of what it is. Oh well....So everyone, who would you consider a better DJ??? And remember we're talking today.....not 25 years ago.

If you're looking for DT's soulful side, go pick up his new album Choice and you'll see what I mean

I have heard him DJ, several times actually. I respect his musical knowledge, techincal ability and I'm sure he has a good record collection, but the tracks he now plays are monotonous, mainly instumental hi nrg. I like his Choice CD but it has no bearing on the contents of his current DJ sets. If someone asked me to recomend the modern equivilant of the stuff on his Choice CD, it wouldn't be the music Tenaglia is currently playing or (in the main) producing.

Lodsa of DJ's are pushing Dance Music forward today without steering towards the Ibiza stuff

    John Howard
Tony Humphries (still doin' it after all these years)

I agree he'll play some non-vocal music, but you have to understand he has 10-12 hours to fill through the night. If I had to hear 12 hours of vocals straight I would go insane. His back to basics CD pretty much sums up a night at Arc. This CD starts in the low 120's and I don't think it breaks 130bpm. I do not consider this Hi NRG. There is a reason that @ WMC his is the most important and influential party of the summer. When he takes the stage @ Space in Miami in March the entire dance industry will be there to see what THE songs of the summer are going to be. If your into house music and you're a dj I guarantee you have a track that Tenaglia broke in your crate. But then again I consider the Ibiza stuff the good stuff....If you don't like house that's fine, but there is def some quality DJ's and producers putting out great tracks...

I know that this thread is old but I want to say that K-Bee's recommedations still hold true and to this I would add:

    Bob Sinclair

The Hed Kandi compilations have generated a bit of debate on this thread and rightly so. but unlike other compilations the songs are always the 12" versions and VERY IMPORTANTLY they are unmixed. For lovers of old Skool House or Disco House they are unbeatable. They firmly believe in a melody as well as a beat which some House music misses. in a sea of formulaic Ministry of Sound and "clubbers Guide" compilations they are a shining light. Well worht the money

    Re: Dance music today

I've been hearing a few songs that were danceable but didn't have the disco spirit. But I did buy a pretty special CD recently, though it's not disco by any stretch. It's called "Souvlaki" by a British band called Slowdive. It was playing in Amoeba Records while I was shopping and I was so blown away I forgot what I was shopping for and bought this instead. It's done in the style some call "shoegazer" music because of the musician's tendency to look at the floor when they play. The music is dark but beautiful, VERY heavy on the synthesizers and bass, with heavily processed vocals but the songs are very sharp. It's really hypnotic and makes me feel like I'm floating on a cloud (it reminds me of my very favorite CD, "Disintegration" by the Cure). If you'd like a change of pace and you like this kind of music anyway I highly recommend it.
