Blax, Marcio et al: a friend borrowed me a CD compilation of Brazilian psychedelic band Os Mutantes (not the Luaka-Bop but the "Millennium" one). Quelle surprise! Really neat stuff, sometimes similar to early Zappa... I LOL with tracks like "El justiciero" and the Janis-sunglike blues "Meu refrigerador nao funciona"! (Translation: "My frezer doesn't work") All material from 1968 to 1972.
For the North Hemisphere, Os Mutantes was Rita Lee's first band in the days of Tropicalismo.
I'm trying to cross the limits of Argentina releases of today's Brazilian music (that is Caetano-Chico-Gil-Bethania or more commercial things like Paralamas and Daniela Mercury). I got a couple of Marisa Monte CDs ("Barulhinho Bom" and "Textos, provas e desmentidos"), both very good. Also heard Carlinhos Brown and Adriana Calcanhotto are good, but found no material yet.
Any recommendations? What should I listen to, or what are your favorites?

    Hi Nano,

I must confess, my musical landscape is not so wide. My favorite brazilian artists are those that have made or make black music over here. So, here it goes:

    Tim Maia (You probably know)
    Ed Motta
    Banda Black Rio
    Gerson 'King' Combo
    Funk Como Le Gusta
    Robson Jorge & Lincon Olivetti
    União Black
    Miguel de Deus
    Jorge Benjor
    Tony Tornado

I hope it would be useful,

    Peace
    P.S.
Let me know if you want any additional info, OK?

Hi Nano and Blaxman (Where are you Zeca Azevedo and Paulo) ???

I thought Shakira is from Argentina, but she isn't, she is from Colombia. Is she the wife of Antonio de la Rúa ?

Mutantes did a L.S.D. experience in 1970, in Paris, and Kurt Cobain liked too much this brazilian group.

Sometimes I saw some disco/jazz brazilian artists is this Site, they're just Eumir Deodato and Sérgio Mendes. There's also Paulinho da Costa (percussion), he worked with some important artists like Jean-Marc Cerrone. Another one, Cassiano, has a 12'' disco/funky song, "Onda", 1977, I never heard it.

Blax: I don't know Tim Maia by name, and from your list I only recognize Ed Motta (often played in a local soul radio show) and Jorge Benjor (ex Ben). Yes, I want more! I'd like for you to name 5 good CDs of Brazilian music.
Marcio: yes I have "Odara", a beautiful song, in the CD "Bicho" by Caetano (which I bought in Caxias do Sul 2 years ago, BTW). The other songs I don't recognize by name, but then I didn't follow traces of old Brazilian hits. I remember there was one called "Mininha veneno" (is it well written?), and of course "Realce" and "Toda meninha bahiana", 2 great dance tracks by Gilberto Gil.
The most known in Argentina of your artists right now are Caetano, Chico Buarque, Gal Costa, Joao Gilberto and Gilberto Gil, as you can see pretty classic stuff. On a distant second place there's Marisa Monte, Bethania, Milton Nascimento, Adriana Calcanhotto and Rita Lee (yes! I remember "Lançaperfume"), who's coming in November to present her Beatles tribute.
The thing is, there's not much more save for bossa nova, Daniela Mercury, something called Axé Bahia and a few rock bands like Titas and Paralamas. Now, when I was in Brazil and went to a record store there were HUNDREDS of artists unknown to us. Like, independent categories as "axé", "forró", "MPB" (which was huge), etc. It was frustrating because I wanted to buy some, but didn't know what to choose and ended with some Chico & Caetano CDs... Which were OK of course but I want to know some other artists.
If you guys can recommend just 5 CDs each, but please don't restrict them to disco/dance music.
    Thanks in advance...

Ah! Shakira IS Colombian and yes, she's Antonito's girlfriend. There were talks of marriage, but all went cold when Antonito's father (then Presidente) was forced to leave our Government house in an helicopter
There was great talk here because Antonito went with Shakira to the MTV Awards, but couldn't get in! She did and thanked for her awards alone. Mmmm...

    Nano,

I'm glad to help you but, be awared, I'm a simple minded guy. Just funk and disco into my brain!!

It's incredible the way the things are!! The late Tim Maia (passed away in 2000, about 55 y.o.) is the greatest brazilian soul/funk/ballads singer. He was and still is very famous over here. And you guess what?? He was Ed Motta's uncle!!
There are lots and lots of compilations from him. If you want an album.....I suggest "Tim Maia Disco Club" (1978). Excellent!!

There is a double compilation called "O Melhor de 2". CD #1 is Tim Maia's hits. CD #2 is Jorge Benjor's hits. Good!!

União Black - União Black (funk, 1977)- Fantastic!!

Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaça (1977)- Superb!!

Fernanda Abreu (good call Marcio!!) - Funk in Lata. - Really cool!!

It was released recently (I dont have it yet) a CD from Sandra de Sá singing Motown hits!! Smokey Robinson himself sings along her in the album!! COOL!!

I hope it could help you somehow,

    Peace

    P.S.
Did you know? The horn section on Gilberto Gil's 'Realce' is from Earth, Wind & Fire!!

MPB - Means 'musica popular brasileira'. This is the category where Caetano, Chico, Marisa Monte are placed!

Hey Marcio, Nano, everybody, I'm back!

    Hi fellas,

Nano, I can understand your problem. Brazilian music wit very rich - lots of rhythms and classic records. I have almost all records by OS MUTANTES - I love them. I have some records by RITA LEE in her solo career, including her first album, recorded with Arnaldo Baptista (you know who...). These days there's a lot of classic brazilian albums being released by our majors like WEA, SONY and EMI - gems form the 50's, the 60's and the 70's. I think I know brazilian music enough to recommend some records to you:

    - ELIS REGINA - ELIS E TOM (74, Universal Music - the best MPB album of all time, no contest)
    - TIM MAIA - TIM MAIA (70, his first album, Universal Music - this one contains PRIMAVERA e FLAMENGO)
    - LUIZ MELODIA - PÉROLA NEGRA (one of the most beautiful brazilian albums ever, you must hear this one - 1973, Universal Music)
    - JORGE BEN - ÁFRICA BRASIL (76, Universal Music - a masterpiece!)
    - SOM TRÊS - TOBOGÃ (69, EMI - simply brilliant)
    - TRIO MOCOTÓ - SAMBA ROCK (2001 - their latest album is one of their best - irresistible brazilian grooves!)
    - QUARTETO NOVO - QUARTETO NOVO (67 - EMI - just see the names of the members of this fabulous group: HERMETO PASCOAL, AIRTO MOREIRA, THÉO DE BARROS & HERALDO DO MONTE - 4 of the best musicians our country ever had, playing wonderful music!)
    - MARCOS VALLE - you can pick a double CD edited by EMI in a series called BIS - is very cheap and the song list is filled with classic songs by VALLE - you'll love the guy, believe me)
    - ELZA SOARES - DO CÓCCIX ATÉ O PESCOÇO (2002, independent label - the best album of the year in Brasil until now - and the year is almost ending! Unbelievable record that mixes hip-hop with samba, made by a wonderful singer - she has almost 70 years old and still delivers hot brazilian grooves like no one else! A vital record)
    - OS MULHERES NEGRAS - MÚSICA E CIÊNCIA (88, WEA - an experimental pop group, OS MULHERES NEGRAS are almost as original as OS MUTANTES when it comes to subvert pop music. A very very fine record, recently re-released in a remastered edition with a great bonus track)
    - DOM SALVADOR E ABOLIÇÃO (70, SONY - an "early edition" of BANDA BLACK RIO, this combo was pivotal to the development of brazilian soul. Super classic!)
    - MAX DE CASTRO - ORQUESTRA KLAXON (2002, Trama Discos - the second album by this genius of nu brazilian music (and son of SIMONAL) mixes samba with soul, bossa, R&B and e-music in a very organic, natural way. Only a few inches behind ELZA SOARES' CD in the pool for the best CD of 2002 in Brasil)
    - CASSIANO - CUBAN SOUL - 18 KILATES (76, Universal Music - what can I say? Cassiano is our Soul genius and this is his best record - in my opinion, one of the best soul records ever released in any country! I cry when I hear this one, it's so beautiful!)

There's more & more & more records that I can mention here. I have all these records I mentioned above and believe me, they're all great.

If you or any other person in this FORUM want more info on brazilian music, I'm glad to help you.

    Paz (peace)

    Nano,

Try this others brazilian songs too, they were on the brazilian radio:

    1)Cazuza/"Faz Parte Do Meu Show",1988.
    2)Lulu Santos/"Assim Caminha A Humanidade",1994.
    3)Adriana Calcanhoto/"Vambora",1998.
    4)Djavan/"Eu Te Devoro",1988.
    5)Maurício Manieri/"Bem Querer",1999.

In 1988 Paralamas do Sucesso opened the Tina Turner's show in Argentina, in the River Plate's stadium, and the UB40 and Simple Minds' shows in Brazil (thank you Arthur Dapieve).

Zeca Azevedo, I love "Eu Amo Voce" in the first Tim Maia's record, it was very hard to find this song lost in my memory.

But Nano, Spanish language is very wonderful. Sting did a song ("They Dance Alone") with a Spanish language quote, it's great !!!

A Brazilian group called "BsB Disco Club" came out with a new CD this year which I heard segments of. The 4 disco songs on that album are "Mude o Baile", "Superpoderosa", "Bomba-relógio", and "Desacelerar", but they also have songs with other styles. I like their emphasis on real instruments, and they sometimes use strings. Definitely worth a listen.

Marcio: I saw Paralamas in Argentina several times, in fact I interviewed them for a music mag around 1995 (no, I wasn't the one who "wished Herbert luck" ). They were a powerful trio in concert. Hope the guys are in form again...
But you know how Paralamas did get known in Argentina? By recording a greatest hits album in Spanish, specially for our market. The same happened when Caetano did the "Fina estampa" album. Roberto Carlos and Maria Creuza were big artists here in the past because of this. You see, it's really a language barrier what separates us.

    That's right!!!
I know Bsb Disco Club and it really kick ass.
Only real instruments, no samplers and with an amazing bass line in all the songs.
That's really the future of disco music.

    Hi Nano,

Paralamas is very good, I like "Romance Ideal" (1984), "A Novidade" (1985), "Quase Um Segundo" (1988), "Lanterna dos Afogados" (1989), "Caleidoscópio" (1990), "Só Pra te Mostrar" (Herbert Vianna&Daniela Mercury, 1982) and "Aonde Quer Que Eu Vá" (probably 2000).

Another brazilian group, Kid Abelha, has a Cd in Spanish, I can't believe. Kid Abelha has a female vocal, Paula Toller.

Paralamas has a new CD, there's a song in Spanish ("La Estación") but the song that Herbert Vianna wrote with Fito Paez will come out after that.

I saw a strange picture of Paralamas, is it true ??? Am I dreamming ???

    Hello Montilla,
sure, any music info from there is welcome. You know, I can't find an overall history of Brazilian music in Spanish... I think that says all.
I have a book on Caetano & Gil, but written by someone from Spain. Go figure!

And Marcio, if the photo has no Photoshop "retouches", I'd say Herbert wears the so-called Mercosur in his sleeve.
