Another fantastic Friday come and gone @ Larry Holmes Ringside. Lots of good food, good people and good vibes. In the mix was alot of soul, funk and disco to add to the spirits. Some of the classics I spun this past Friday were:

    Fencewalk - Mandrill
Dance across the floor - Jimmy 'Bo' Horne
Welcome to our world (of merry music) - Mass Production
Dance, Lady, Dance - The Crown Heights Affair
Stranger in Paradise - Isaac Hayes
I'll play the fool - Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
Give me your love - Sylvia Stripling
Beat the Street - Sharon Redd
    Funk Electric - Electric Funk

    and on the mellow side:

Irons in the fire - Teena Marie
    Autumn love - Hi-Tension
Love's been gone so long - Tower of Power
Heaven must be like this - The Ohio Players

Lots of fun playing these. Hope they bring you some joy in your memories. Love to hear your comments as always.

    Jazz:

Picking up from the other post, I loved all the entries from your last round. 'Razzmatazz', great call, forgot that one. Also, I let you have 'Running away' to pay you back for letting me have the B,B&Q Band. One hand washes the other. I'll be back to answer that call in a few.

Okay Jazz, now to 'S'tun you with my next entry, check this out:

Theme from Shaft - Isaac Hayes (Just watched the original movie over the weekend)
Theme from S.W.A.T. - Rhythm Heritage (The break in this record continues to rock today)
Spring Affair - Donna Summer (A fave of mine from her)

'S'haking in your boots are you? Now to really 'T'orture you, take this:

Tonight, I'm alright - Narada Michael Walden (This record was a party rocker)
Turn the beat around - Vicki Sue Robinson (A disco classic)
Try me - Donna Summer (Another off my top 25)

A 'T'antalizing list if I must say so myself. Let's see you respond after that.

A great round, Sammy!! On the S's I only know Shaft which is of course a classic. I watched the film recently on Britsh TV as well - John Shaft is nearly as cool as me!!

Tonight I'm Alright - I agree - what a great party record that was!!! Turn The Beat Around - another great tune which I loved. I couild easily have picked both of those!

As I'm busy, I will comment on your Friday tunes later, but I must say - one of your best playlists yet!!

    Onto mt T's and U's@

Ten Per Cent - Double Exposure
Tell Me Why - Bobby Womack
The Beat Goes On - Ripple

    Underwater - Harry Thumann
    Uptown Festival - Shalamar
Use It Up Wear It Out - Odyssey

    Hi Sammy,

About the playlist. Really pleasant list my friend!!

Were you inspired by Marky's list? I'm talking about "Stranger In Paradise" and Sylvia Striplin.

BTW, I love "Dance Lady Dance' by CHA.

    Peace

As I said - what a strong lineup!

Some of my faves include: Jimmy Bo Horne - what a great funky dance record that one was!

Mass Production: well, you know I have been reviving that one a lot recently ...

Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - I never heard that track until one day in the Eighties when it came up on a pirate radio show one day! And since then I managed to find it in a second hand record store in London... Love it!!

Sharon Redd - Beat The Street - I think the remix of that was absolutely tremendous - man, the bass was so powerful!!

Mandrill - Fencewalk - I have that on a funk CD compilation, but to be honest, I haven't played that one as much as I should have! I'll put it on tonight!

That Sylvia Stripling record, you may be interested to now, was one of those records that achieved rare groove status and started changing hands for silly prices...

We had a discussion about Teena Maria a few days ago, and it is nice to see you slipping that one in!!!

YES DEFINITELY - your list brings back some great memories!!

First of all, in response to Blaxman and Jazz's comments. Glad you guys liked the list. Blax, to answer your question, no I did not even know Marky had a list. However, based on what you said, it appears Marky and I have similar tastes. Either that or it's just coincidence. Jazz, Sylvia Stripling's 'Give me your love' was huge in NYC my freshman year of college 1980-'81. Great song! Now onto the challenge. Jazz, 'Ten Percent' was a great choice. Your other tracks stumped me for the most part, although a couple sound familiar. I have to admit you have won this round because I am stumped with my 'U's and 'V's. I came up with three 'U's, however, only one can really be considered disco. Also, I can only think of one 'V'. Anyway, here they are:

Use me - Bill Withers (More on the soul side)
Up for the down stroke - Parliament (More on the funk side)
Upside down - Diana Ross (Not a big Diana fan, however, can't deny this one)

    as for my lone 'V',

Victim - Candi Staton (Love Candi Staton)

Curious to see how many 'V's you come up with. I'll make up for it on the 'W's, but I don't think I can say the same for the 'X's.

    Hi Sammy!

Regarding the T's you didn't know - I am sure you know Ripple on Salsoul. The Bobby Wonmack track was from his Poet 2 (I think) LP in 1985, and is a glorious soulful disco dancer. A truly uplifting record!

As for your U's - I had those three plus one other so I understand how difficult it is. That is a great V you picked there - Candi Staton - but I reckon I can get two V trax!!

Very Last Drop - Bobby Thurston (my favourite Prelude artist)
    Vitamin U - Smokey Robinson

As for W's - dead easy - enjoy these:

We Got The Funk - Positive Force
    Winners - Kleeer
Was That All It Was - Jean Carn

    Jazz,

My delay in my response is because you took my three 'W's. Therefore, I must say, great taste my man. Didn't know your 'V's so I cannot comment. I'll be back soon with a new batch of 'W's. I have one already.

So you think you 'W'alloped me because you took my 'W's; Well, think again. Check these out:

When you wake up tomorrow - Candi Staton (Told you, I love Candi Staton)
We got our own thing - C.J. & Co. (A disco classic)
Weekend - Class Action (An '80's dance classic)

I don't have any 'X's a/o right now so unless you have some, I suggest you can go right to 'Y'.

I have two of your W's in my collection, and the third one, that CJ and Co track, I don't know.

    My three Y's are

Young Hearts Run Free - Candi Staton - a real anthem that one. That was what Saturday night was all about (for us punters!)!

You And I - Rick James

    You - Samuel Jonathan Johnson

Well that's it from me for the disco stuff!

That's me after seeing you took my favorite Candi Staton track 'Young hearts run free'. I love this one the most of the previous ones I listed. I can't fault you though, it's as awesome as you described it. 'You and I', I remember it well. While I was in high school, the first time I heard Rick James I said "What is that"? Great choice. Didn't know your third track though. Now onto my list, 'Y'ippee!

You'll never find another love like mine - Lou Rawls (We'll never hear another voice like his either, fantastic)
Your sweetness is my weakness - Barry White (Who's deeper? Low Rawls or Barry White)
You can't hide your love - David Joseph (I know you remember this one.

    As an added bonus:

Yearnin' Learnin' - Earth, Wind & Fire

First rate list if I must say so myself. Now what do you propose? Another category of music perhaps. Your call, I'm up to the challenge.

    Sammy

Very nice list, I must say. A fine way to end the challenge! Lou Rawls, Barry White, David Joseph and of course EWF. Especially the British connection!!

But hey! Wait a minute! There's another letter! And I can think of one one track:

Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart - The Trammps - one of my all-time favourites!!

JP gets the last word!!

    THE NEXT CHALLENGE

Some ideas in the mix ...

A-Z - Jazz style (I think I might enjoy that!)

A - Z disco music - but this time the song has to END with the appropriate letter

    OR

... and I kinda like this one!!

Pick a letter / music style / category ( artist or song or label) - then we have a day to list as many entries under that letter as we can - compiling them on Word for example, then we must post them at the same time each day onto the Board - around now and see who has the most entries!!!

EG jazz tunes ending in L
    slow jams beginning with A
disco artistes starting with K from 1975
    UK disco records from 1981
    etc

We could take turns to define a category ... The possibilities (and the fun) could be endless - and maybe some more people could join in!!

    What do you reckon, Sammy??

They all sound cool to me Jazz. Whatever your call is fine with me. The Jazz category would be a challenge for me, however, I do have an associate here at work who is quite the Jazz enthusiast so I do have a connection if I get stuck.

OK! We'll go for a jazz round this time!!

A-Z of Songs - disco orientated or slow jams with a jazz influence!! Sounds OK to me!!

I'll be nice to you and let you start - you can decide how many entries per letter!

    Jazz:

I'm here ready to take on this enormous challenge and try to do battle with you on Jazz influenced disco and slow jams. I know I'm in way over my head here, however, I look forward to what gems I may come across during this exchange. If okay I suggest either two to three entries per letter. In other words three if you have it, but two at least. Now to start, under short notice I came up with the following:

    Anthracite - Cymande (Early '70's Jazz-Funk-Disco track)
Aufu Oodo - Ramsey Lewis (An obscure jazz-funk track from your year '77 with an African laiden influence)
Appletree - Erykah Badu (Granted this is only 5 years old, but I love this obscure track from her monster debut LP)

Three obscure tracks to start this very challenging battle. I think I am really going to enjoy this.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

    Well,

What a start Sammy! I don't know any of them!! So I have shall have to check them out!!

Now for some education ... JP style!!

Even though I managed to leave the lists I made last night at home ... so from memory ...

Always There - take your pick - Ronnie Laws, Willie Bobo, Incognito ... First heard that at a tiny basement Monday night club called the Hilltops. It was the first time I was exposed to hard driving jazz fusion rythms (at the tender age of 17) and it was a real experience I can tell you!! Out of all the jazz fusion tracks - the Willie Bobo version of Always There is possibly my Number One jazz track of all time!!!

Ain't No Sunshine - Sivuca - a latin-influenced jazz version of Bill Withers perennial classic from 1975, which became very popular in the clubs in London in the early 1980's and consequently got a re-issue on a London 12-inch! Brilliant!

Africano - Earth Wind and Fire - we in the Jazz Pilgrims always loved that track for its jazz influences! Wicked!

    and a bonus A
Ashewo Ara - Kabbala - an Afro-jazz track which took the clubs I used to frequent by storm in around 1983/84!

By All Means - Alphonse Mouzon - from the 1981 LP of the same name. 12 minutes of pure quality jazz-funk with the likes of Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard in support!

Brasilia - John Klemmer - from his 1979 LP of the same name. 9 mins long and brilliant to dance to. Right in the JP's groove!

Barbara Ann - Webster Lewis - a samba tinged jazz fusion classic from '78 that was impossible to find until CBS issued it on the Club Classics series in the mid-Eighties.
Another jazz track that was really great to dance to!!

I think I am gonna enjoy this challenge!

Sammy - if you don't know any of them - get yourself an MD player and you can have them all!!

    Jazz:

The list of artists you submitted is a venerable who's who of musicians. Unfortunately, I am only familiar with 'Always there' and 'Africano', two monster picks. The others sound fantastic though. I will definitely have to invest in an MD player. By the way, you left out Side Effect's version of 'Always there' from around '78 which was actually the first version I ever heard and the most discofied of the bunch. Before I get into my next round, a couple of bonus tracks:

Azucar - Eddie Palmieri (A latin jazz classic)
Angel of the night - Angela Bofill (My girl, 'nuff said)

Now to my next 'B'atch of 'B's:

Bra - Cymande (A classic from the early '70's; 30 years later the break in this record still rocks a party)
The Bottle - Gil-Scott Heron (An all-time fave of mine)
Big Blow - Manu Dubango (You've heard me talk about this one before)

    'C'heck these out,

Could heaven ever be like this - Idris Muhammad (A disco-jazz classic)
Can't you see me - Roy Ayers (I know you like this one)
Checkmate - Barrabas (Latin jazz influenced funk dance track from around '74)

"ALL JAM" back in the flow of things. Now I'm feeling better about this challenge.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

Like your jazz choices Sammy! Two of your B's are absolute classics - The Bottle and Big Blow. Have you heard the 13-minute live version of the Bottle, BTW? Got a re-release in the late 70's on a Northern Soul label - Inferno Records ....I have that one on a Jazz Juice compilation LP. Big Blow was one of my top favourites from 1977 - such a vibrant feel to that record. 'Nuff said!

Norman Jay played Could Heaven Ever Be Like This - Idris Muhammad on his Funk Factory show last week. I would say not only is it a jazz disco classic - more like a defining moment in music! That record is SOOOOOOO good it hurts!! Has a really great atmosphere and mood to it! And of course Can't You See Me was one my list!! The others I was not sure about. Great choices Sammy!!

    Onto my C's

Carmel - Joe Sample - took a long time to grow on me but I love it now!!

Captain Connors - Norman Connors - great funky jazzy driving rhythms instrumental! From 1977 too!

Cosmic Lust - Mass Production - one of their jazzier numbers and a great favourite with the Jps.. as was the bonus C ..

Captain Axe and Mr Sax - Morrissey-Mullen - my favourite British jazz-funk combo I used to go and see them every week!! Saw them perform this live (with the rest of the Pilgrims) on the day that Prince Charles married Diana. The first time I ever saw MM in concert was this day.

Dominoes - Donald Byrd - THE Jazz Pilgrims anthem of anthems!

Drifting - Charles Earland - mid 70's fusion from one of my fave artists - this is simply magical!

Dancin' Love Affair - Wayne Henderson - lively jazzy disco number..

Sammy how could we have both forgotten Birdland from Weather Report?? :???:

    Jazz:

I don't know what happened; I had replied to your last entry and it got lost. So to sum things up since it was alot I wrote. I knew three of your tracks, loved 'em. Here's my next entry:

    Dance Band - Donald Byrd
Do what you wanna do - Billy Cobham/George Duke Band
    Dazz - Brick

    and

East river drive - Grover Washington, Jr.
Everybody loves the sunshine - Roy Ayers
    Enter in - The Blackbyrds

Sorry so short. I had comments on each, however, it was too much to rewrite. I'll elaborate further on the next one.

This battle is very challenging; I only know one of your tracks, 'Expansions' by Lonnie Liston Smith. I am unfamiliar with the others, unfortunately for me. I am a little stuck with the next round so I may wait to check my Jazz collection at home before I respond. Let's see. I'll be back.

    OK Sammy,

While you are thinking about your next entries, I shall fill you in on those tracks that you did not know..

Every Generation - Ronnie Laws - this fantastic jazz-tinged slow jam was the title track from his 1980 LP - interestingly it features a harp on it as well - a real killer!

El Bobo - Webster lewis - latin-tinged jazzy dancer from his 1981 LP.

Free Spirit - the other great dance track from Dennis Coffey's 1977 Lp that featured "Wings Of Fire"

First Love - Richard Tee - a jazzy dancer from around '78 from the Tappan Zee jazz label.. The track is part of a 4-track EP 12-inch called "Turn On The Tap" that was released in the UK ... Aslo featured Bob James and Wilbert Longmire ....

The Freeze - Rodney Franklin tinkling the piano over a funky beat in the early Eighties ... then it would stop (freeze) for a second or so and carry on ... We used to do a dance - the "Anti-Freeze" - where we would freeze during the music and dance to the silent bits only .....

There you go - hope that fills you in!!

    Jazz:

Thanks so much for the insight on your last entries. The anti-freeze, I love it. Dancing only to the silent breaks; Sounds like The Jazz Pilgrims really knew how to have a good time. I did not have a chance to check my records last night, again, however, I came up with a couple off the top of my head; So here goes:

Fo Fi Fo - Pieces of a dream (Their tribute to the '83 Philadelphia 76'ers run to the world championship)
Front money - David Newman (What a find last night during my blind treasure track hunt)
Free - Deniece Williams (I put this in as a bonus because I love it so much)

    and on the 'G'hetto side,

Ghettos of the mind - Pleasure (The trumpet solo in this record is stirring to me)
The Ghetto - Donny Hathaway (Talk about stirring, how about this voice)
Get on up, get on down - Roy Ayers (I know I can always score big with you when I mention this guy)

There you go Jazz. Maybe not as deep as you on the Jazz side, but I think I'm holding my own without going through my collection. I want to give a better account of myself in this challenge though, so look out.
