Most of the songs are Eh? to OK but nothing earthshaking with the exception of Karen Silver whom I really liked everything she did and Narada who never disappoints....The "Dancing In The Streets" was better left to Martha and The Vandellas....Sylvia Striplin was worth the pick-up and I never heard of Jeree Palmer.

However, the real standouts worth your trip to the store even in the midst of an earthquake are:
Numbers 9 and 12...(I checked my Top 2000 and they were the only two of your grouping that made my chart)......I was curious if the B side of the Ritchie Family is "Lady Luck" or the hard-to-find instrumental and what is the running time?

To me, The Ritchie Family said it all in that one song title: Life IS Music! :)

    Danceman,

The flip of BOTH "Life Is Music" 12"ers that I have is "Lady Luck"; so I have nothing but C to C+ tracks, eh???

Ah well...I get a thrill during the search...I guess that makes it worthwhile.

    Hi Marky,

I know a couple of records that you bought:

The Pockets - If my memory serves me well, this group was produced by some guys from Earth Wind & Fire (Verdine, I guess). It is a decent track, but they failed to get a hit. So, they remains obscure.
Oops, sorry for the 'dirty word' obscure!

Silvia Striplin - This lady was a Roy Ayers (the 'doo bee doo' guy) protegé. He produced her album and the result is decent.
I think 'Give me Your Love" cool, but I'm not sure if Ms. Striplin is really a good singer.

Tavares - I love this group, and I love the track "Slow Train To Paradise", but I dont have this album and nor even know it.

Ritchie Family - 'Life is Music' is my second fave song from them. The first is 'I'll Do My Best'.

The Three Degrees - Marvelous!!! Nothing more is needed to say. Thinking well....I must to say that I HATE SHORT VERSIONS too!! What a hell!! Why they do that??

Well, that's all that I know, but.....i think.......thumbs up Marky!!!!

    Peace

Play them and make sure. The first batch that TK pressed up inadvertenly had "Long Distance Romance" (LP version) as the flip and not the extended version of "Lady Luck". The labels and catalog number are identical, so the only way to be sure is to hear it... or to check the matrix number on the runout groove; the corrected version has -RE added.

As for the "rare" instrumental version of "Life Is Music" -- I think this was actually put out under a different name, which might explain why people have such a hard time finding it. Jacques Morali released a version of the song with the same instrumental backing tracks, but a male lead vocal en Français. It's titled "Disco Music (C'est la musique)" and was put out under the name Olivier. The flip is a mostly-instrumental mix (still has one verse in it, I think). If a true instrumental exists, it was likely only released in Europe.

I have the Diva Gray & Oyster "Hotel Paradise" LP... very unusual cover for a disco album; shows a cartoon drawing of a slummy street scene.

And I can so relate about buying the same things more than once! I'm getting really bad with that, especially when I luck out and land a 20+ record score. Once you get more than a thousand or so records, it becomes really hard to mentally keep track. I have scores of duplicate copies now, not so much from not knowing that I already had them, but from thinking that I needed a better copy, or a US pressing, or a better copy of a US pressing, when I already had one. I've inadvertently bought Gloria Gaynor's "Glorious" LP 4 times as a result.

I love your subject title Marky. I love that Bob Dole 3rd person speak
As for Pockets, their "Come Go With Us" album from 1977 is one of the best albums I have. I highly recommend you buy it if you come across it. Tracks of note are, "Come Go With Me", "One Day At A Time", "In The Pocket" and "Elusive Lady."
    Find them and destroy them!

I'm not sure Sylvia is a really good singer either but somehow her album (also called Give Me Your Love) is a damn fine album!

The original vinyl sells around $150 (I have a CD re-issue) and I've seen the original Uno Melodic 12" sell for $50 on ebay. So, Marky if you got the original treasure it

    Hey DeepBeat,

Thanks for that info!!! What I got was a sealed Uno Melodic Record (1980) with a yellow label; "Give Me Your Love" is on the A-side and "You Can't Turn Me Back" is on the B-side. They had more for $6.48 a piece. It must be a reissue--but if it's the original label, that's good news. Sometimes they have bootlegs that have awful sound quality and bad surface noise. I've been fooled before, believe me!!!!

    They had more????!!!!
If I remember correctly, You Can Turn Me was the A-side and Give Me Your Love was on the flip side. The label was yellow with the Uno Melodic stamp on it (the actual logo is rainbow like but the scans I've seen of the 12" have it in black). I think the catalogue number was actually....001. The only other Uno Melodic release I know of was the Eighties Ladies album also produced by Roy Ayers which I also got on a german CD re-issue.

I paid $35 for Sylvia's CD re-issue if that tells you something...

Hey Marky, "Mystic man" is a great album by the now deceased Mr. Tosh. I recommend his "Bush doctor" too. But beware, this guy sings about drugs!
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    hey marky,

the first few on your list didn't do much for me. i'd be curious to hear what YOU think about them. however, i like-to-love everything from #6 to #13 (i prefer the karen silver b-side, "hot stuff," not a remake.) sylvia striplin is most certainly a bootleg - the original goes for serious $$$. of course i have two copies

how is the tavares lp, and, in particular, "Slow Train to Paradise" ???

does the biddu lp have "rainforest" on it? that's my favorite track of his released under his own name (biddu wrote and produced for tina charles, carl douglas, etc.)

of course i gotta ask you about that peter tosh track because i can't imagine that reggae legend having a trocadero classic!! please explain . . .

    thanks!

    Hi sfbeary!!

Regarding the Peter Tosh...I've got evidence on 2 sets from Troc. First is on a series of tapes from the 1981 Anniversary Party--on the second side of tape #7 , after "Fancy Dancer" by Gregg Diamond, and a track by Ish (of Foxy) titled "Don't Stop" comes this reggae tune. I posted here for info...and my good pal Keefe ID'd it as the dub version of Peter Tosh's "Buk-in-Hamm Palace" (Rolling Stone/1979). The dub is titled "Dubbbing in Buk-In-Hamm"--I recently found a 12" at Amoeba--Keefe says this is rare--BUT the CD version of "Mystic Man" also has the 12" and the Dub versions on it!!! This I learned in SF--it was at Tower (Keefe, of course, had found it).

Bobby V used to use stuff like this in the Morning Music" section all the time; it is on one of his tapes "Giorgio & Beyond".

So the lyrics go something like "Light up your spliff--light up your chalice (sung by women)--then he says "reggae music" a few times and then it's mostly a nice reggae groove. Mick Jagger's name (Mick's Mix) is on the vocal mix. Check it out sometime.

OK, I'm playing the Peter Tosh CD now. The liner notes say that "Peter hated Disco". Yet Sly & Robbie persuaded him to do this track with a decidedly "funky, disco feel". Robbie says that after it's release, Tosh had misgivings. But the record is a nice groove. The girls in the background include Gwen Guthrie, Yvonne Lewis & Brenda White. It's Tosh's fantasy about smoking a spliff in Buckingham Palace with the good ole Queen of England!!! Quelle surprise!!!

    The original track is 8:46.
    The 12" mix is 7:42.
The dub is 8:31. (This is what was played at Troc).

    Hey Barry,

Well I put on the "Slow Train To Paradise' and listened twice and it's OK--BUT doesn't make me forget "Don't Take Away The Music"--my fave Tavares track. Haven't had a chance to listen to the rest of the LP yet(BTW: this is the LP with their "More Than A Woman" on it); it's produced by Freddie Perren.

The Biddu LP doesn't have "Rainforest"; It DOES have his "Girl You'll be a Woman Soon' cover and (what caught my eye): "Funky Tropical" and "Boogiethon"--haven't listened yet--BUT those titles were mentioned here, I think. Haven't listened yet--but for $3.00--what the hell!!!
