Jeff Burned Me ....2 CD's, That is...

For Jeff's birthday (he's over 40, is all I'll say)

NOTE: my tapes to Jeff were mostly show-tunes and stuff like that...only a few disco tracks, cause he has all that stuff, already)

BUT anyway, enuf about ME,... Jeff returned the favor and burned me 2 CD's that he presented to me in SF.

I'm listening to them now and was gonna e-mail Jeff my comments--BUT what the hell, we're all one big happy family here, right???--I'll just share my comments with y'all.

The CD's are a combination of stuff I don't have and requested, combined with stuff I mentioned here that I didn't know, garnished with some bad taste gems that Jeff loves to ferret out on e-Bay!!! What no Sergio Franchi, Tony Orlando OR Wayne Newton DISCO gems????!!!!

CD #1:

"LET ME TAKE YOU DANCING, STUBBORN FELLA":

1) JUST ANOTHER BROKEN HEART - Dorothy Moore
(Jeff says this song came into play due to a lyric quiz by Maarten...actually it was nrgbeat who posted the lyrics and said "Name That Tune"...I went to Loleatta Holloway's "The Greatest Performance Of
My Life"--but I was wrong...I only knew Dorothy from the mid-70's ballad "Misty Blue"...I like this track...this would have been a Troc song for sure--or maybe it WAS--AFTER I left SF...what's the year of release on this?)

2) TURNING MY BACK AND WALKING AWAY - Carol Jiani
( nice flow from Dorothy into this one..this track was discussed here...I never heard this one before...wouldn't have guessed that it was Carol with her Linda Clifford-esque rapping in the opening...Good Drama Diva stuff...my only complaint...the fucking drum machines)

3) LET ME TAKE YOU DANCING - Bryan Adams
(my request...DISCO HEAVEN...cheesy and irresistible TROC classic..thanks so much)

4) KEEP ON MAKING ME HIGH - Unyque
(this has been discussed here...probably danced to this back in the day...I like it)

5) TRANQUILLO (MELT MY HEART) (Disco Mix) - Carly Simon
(this is due to Jeff's own cryptic lyric quiz...which stumped the board...someone said it had to be a Carole King song...finally the East Coast and a publishing house reference led me to Carly)

6) SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME - Destination
(Almighty Records remake of the Space classic that I ranked #7 on my Top 25...they changed the lyrics and cheesed it up.... I love the original with it's Phillip Glass-like synths and gorgeous vocal)

7) STAY OVER - Essex Girls
(more Almighty Records stuff...nice track)

STUBBORN KIND OF FELLA - Buffalo Smoke
(track I only knew from Napster...people used to express delight that I had it...I only knew Marvin Gaye's version)

9) THE BEAST IN ME - Silence 2 feat. Gordon Grody
(Jacques Fred Petrus curiosity that Jeff unearthed--even Maarten had never heard of it--why do I keep thinking Tina Turner should have recorded this in her "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" phase...it screams TINA to me)

10) SUMMER HEAT: A DMC REMIX - Donna Summer
(Great fun...fooling-around with Donna's classics!!)

11) MYSTERY BONUS SONG!!!!
(it's a disco version of "Night & Day"--sounds like Sinatra--BUT I don't think so--maybe Frank Sinatra JR???!!!)

OK, I'm gonna post this and then edit in my comments...so I don't lose it all.

Well, I tried that and I lost it all...sooo I'm gonna do the 2nd CD track list and maybe try to do the comments at work with a more reliable computer than this FUCKING piece of ****!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! :sad:

my request...Love this tune the b-side of the previous track...John Luongo mix.. a Troc morning classic...fewer pops and cracks on this one...guess the previous owner liked the A-side better...how lucky for me!!!)

3) LULLABY OF BROADWAY - I.R.T.
(vintage mid-70's track...cheesy but cute..I used to loathe this stuff...BUT , now in my old age....

4) AND I'M TELLING YOU I'M NOT GOING - Koffie
(continuing in the Broadway Goes Disco vein...I noticed this cut debuted on Billboard this week in 1983...Aloha was now closed...it flew over or under my radar... good vocal, I like this)

5) ADVENTURES OF THE LOVE CRUSADER - Sarah Brightman & The Starship Troopers
(Ugghhh!!! Gag ME!!! Campy dreck--BUT thanks for the memory!!!)

6) FROM NEW YORK TO L.A. - Patsy Gallant
(more cheese than a Kraft dinner...irresistible...I'm singing that chorus in my sleep!!!)

7) SUGAR DADDY - Patsy Gallant
(catchy...not as memorable as #6..."Fill up my bowl, Sugar daddy and let the love begin"...is ol Pats rippin off Bessie Smith "I need a little sugar in my bowl, I need a little hot dog between my roll"????)

AS LONG AS IT'S LOVE - Theo Vaness
(I see I do have this one...kinda cheesy...the other tracks on the LP are better...but it has a gay-positive message)

9) UP THE LADDER TO THE ROOF - John Kydd w/ Cindy Birdsong, Jayne Edwards, Lynda Laurence & Scherrie Payne
(who the **** was John Kydd???....and why did HE get top billing when the gals do almost ALL the singing??? Fun when you know who's singing... Was Mary Wilson OOT on a Street Fair Tour???) :lol:

10) I HEAR A SYMPHONY - Eria Fachin
(continuing in the Supremes covers section...Miss "Saving Myself" tackles a classic...it's cheesy but fun...DO I DETECT A PATTERN HERE????!!!!...Eria has a nice voice)

11) THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL - Sandra Edwards
(a cover of my beloved ABBA...I prefer the Hazell Dean cover on the ABBA tribute CD--anyone ever listened to that???.. pretty damn good)

12) MYSTERY BONUS SONG!
(OK, IF I told ya...the back up was by the "Everage White Band"...could ya guess???

"Waltzing Matilda" by Dame Edna gone Disco!!!

Again, thanks to Jeff for the custom CD's...it's always appreciated when someone takes the time to compile some "treasures" into a nifty one-of-a-kind gift.

Hey Marky,

I have only two comments to add:

- No gay camp compilation is complete without at least one Jacques Morali-produced number... preferably one of the ones he did for Eartha Kitt, i.e. Where Is My Man, I Love Men, Sugar Daddy, et al...

- When typing up long posts, do them first in Notepad or Wordpad (dunno what the Mac equivalent is), and then copy and paste. If the board chokes, you've still got the original to copy again.

Not that I'd ever buy a Bryan Adams compilation CD, but when I've ever looked at any, 'Let Me Take You Dancing' is never included. Perhaps not surprising but isn't it a shame? It'd really piss off his millions of rock fans eh?

I might. I liked some of his later stuff,especially the track cuts like a knife. Summer of 69 is good to blend INTO LMTYD!

Hey Steely,

Bryan Adams loathes this sped-up and discofied version of his original slower rock song. When he became a big star a few years later--I think he made a deal with A&M to NEVER release that 12" version on ANYTHING!!!! Therefore, I've never been able to find it--at least for a fair price. It only exists on the orignal 12" and Hot Tracks did do a remix that Jeff sent me on CD--BUT Bryan didn't approve that, I'm sure. Too bad, I always liked the pubescent-acne-scarred-teenager sound of Bryan on this "doctored" DISCO CLASSIC!!! :lol:

Just slow it down by 6% and its unmistakeably Bryan Adams voice. I guess this means the whole thing was released a semi tone up from where it should have been pitched, including the orchestration and drums, bass et al.

Well, I THINK I'm flattered that you shared my compilations with everyone, Marky... or should I be embarrassed?!

Either way, let me reply to a few of your comments:

"Just Another Broken Heart" is from 1984. (Sorry for misidentifying the member who posted the lyrics quiz about this song!)

That version of "Night and Day" IS by Frank Sinatra himself, from 1977.

Hey, I know "Love Crusader" is a big ol' ball of cheese, but I thought a song by Sarah Brightman was a good way to ease out of the Broadway theme. And I think the samples/sound-alikes/rip-offs of tunes by Donna Summer, the Supremes and Barry White are worth a chuckle.

I have heard too that Bryan Adams never acknowledges his one big disco hit.

Was this a hit in its day? A friend of mine has a tres-gay co-worker, who upon being told that I had an apartment full of disco, asked for this track. He has virtually no knowledge of disco; never having heard anything outside of the usual overplayed top-40 stuff. He was very surprised that I'd never heard of it, and implied that absolutely everyone knew this number.

I suspect his definition of "absolutely everyone" means 50 other people who watch some pathetic drag queen "perform" to this every night, but I digress...

I had never heard of this song until folks inquired about it at this site. So, I asked Jeff if he had it...so I could hear it.

Miss Patsy was a Canadian, so it may have been huge in your country. That's all I know.

I do see it on various lists from time to time. BUT, that said, I like it!!! :grin:

As for the edits, I am a fanatic about re-reading and correcting my typing errors. Don't ask me why--but I do keep going back and correcting and clarifying things that seem unclear. Is that why my apartment is not getting cleaned on a regular basis??? Hmmmm...food for thought!!! :lol:

hey discopeople,

i own a 7" of "let me take you dancing" that has a bridge that the 12" mix omits. the beat drops out, and i guess john luongo (who also mixes this short version) must've decided that this interlude wasn't disco-friendly. my copy is a little scratchy, but i found it for $.25 at the thrift store and it's mega-rare.

"from new york to la" was not only a big canadian hit, but it was also a top ten uk pop hit. i don't know if it was even released in america. (maybe a 7"??? "sugar daddy" did come out in america as a 12", but wasn't a smash.) patsy released many of her songs in both french and in english, and yes, i've heard that the aformentioned tracks were favored by the drag queen community. disconet remixed one of her tracks a few years after the fact and stuck it on the same disc as bowie's "let's dance." it's cute.

isn't frank's "night and day" frightening???

About Bryan Adams:
around 1993, I remember reading (and re-writing for the mag I worked in) that Bryan had a dance bar as neighbors and he complained several times about "noise" in the A.M. hours. Finally, he buyed the whole place... and then closed it down.

I love this song by Carly Simon! Where I can find this Disco Mix version? I think the original version is included on "BOYS IN THE TREES", her 1978 album for Electra records. Another song by Carly I'm desperate looking for is SPY - do you remember this one?

I found my copy of "Tranquillo" on eBay, and I've seen other copies turn up on eBay from time to time.

The copy I have is a white label promo, but I think the Disco Mix might have been issued only as a promo and not commercially.

I remember the LP "Spy," but if there's a 12-inch single I'm not aware of it. Could you possibly mean the song "Why?" the one she did with Chic in the early '80s...?

thanx for the info about TRANQUILLO. I love this song and it's a shame that is somehow forgotten today. About SPY: no, it's not WHY, her collaboration with CHIC (another forgotten song, in my opinion). SPY is the title song of her 1979 album (this album has 2 more great songs, VENGEANCE and JUST LIKE YOU DO), and it has a great groove. I don't know if there's a 12" of SPY (if anybody here knows, please, please, please, darling please, share your knowledge with us).

I've been disappointed with the recent CDs...BUT the old stuff is pretty terrific.

I even told Jeff how much I like Carly's "Torch" LP when we were shopping at Tower in SF; My fave is that haunting arrangement of "I Get Along Without You Very Well".

But then I once wrote here about how I loved the singer/songwriters of the 1970's so much...it took me a long time to really embrace Disco--at least to BUY it. I had too many faves to buy and as a minimum wage earning studio apartment dwelling single guy in SF in 1975--I had to have the latest Elton John, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Laura Nyro, Paul Simon AND Carly Simon, etc LPs...and didn't have much spare change left to buy Disco Tex & The Sex-o-lettes!!!! :lol:

That all changed with time!!! :grin:

well, you're probably a child of EARLY 70's just like me (LOL). We, children of the early 70's, cannot live without THOM BELL's ballads, singers/songwriters LPs. We can't live without LAURA LEE, HONEY CONE, early DIANA ROSS solo career, WHAT'S GOING ON & LET'S GET IT ON, STEVIE WONDER, THE CHI-LITES, THE DRAMATICS, THE STYLISTICS... Can we? What about BREAD? And THE CARPENTERS? I think we're getting old, baby (LOL 3 times).
