modern soul livin for the weekend
i recently saw this c.d in england i saw the first track jeff perry love dont come no stronger his 1975 disco killer one of the best soulful disco records ever made[arista]with jeff and the swirling strings battling it out to be the lead, the first time on c.d but then i looked again and it is jam packed and full of soulful dancers every one currently in demand and on playlists in english clubs but it is compiled from the breakout soul club in italy !! there isnt a duff second on this c.d tracks are
1/jeff perry-love dont come no stronger
    2/bottom and company-gonna find a true love
    3/smokey robinson-ever had a dream
4/brown sugar-whats the matter with you
    5/temptations-aiming at your heart
    6/gloria gaynor-this love affair
7/cornelious bros and sister rose-big time lover
    8/esther phillips-changin
    9/the dells-dont want nobody
    10/general johnson-dont walk away
11/the originals-good lovin is just a dime away
    12/gloria scott-what am i gonna do
    13/tata vega-i need you now
    14/eugene record-overdose of joy
    15/the dynamic superiors-one nighter
16/bobby womack-how could you break my heart

for any one who dosnt know jeff perry and the uptempo dells screaming wailer from the indie private i label from 84 these 2 are worth the price alone, and lots of these sell for big money here[bottom and co,brown sugar and gloria] i think this c.d will interest MARKY,JAZZ,NICKNACK,MASDEFI,STEELYDAN,SFBEARY and ZECCA AZAVEDO would flip for this.have you seen this MASDEFI? can you ask them to send more !!!!BELLISIMO

So Esther DID record the Sharon Ridley morning music classic "Changin'!!!!! When was that released and on what label????

Son of a bitch! When Marky asked about this a few months ago I looked everywhere. I was sure he and Keefe were mistaken. See what I mean, Marky, they're getting **** over there that doesn't touch us here. Who the hell makes these decisions on what music will work on what continent? Between Jussi's outrageous dance lists and my new Northern Soul fever, I'm feeling quite blue and overwrought.

    hey discodisk and the gang,

thanks for the tip! phew! this cd has my name on it!!! that brown sugar track "The Game Is Over (What's the Matter With You)" is one of my all-time favorites and indeed i voted for it for the disco 500 but alas it didn't make the cut. i wonder if this is the same version as my capitol 7" or the alternate mix on vince montana's *philly ear candy* compilation. that and the nearly-as-good b-side "i'm going through changes now" to my ears suggest what the supremes might've sounded like had miss ross stayed with them through the mid-70's, but maybe even better because there's no ego baggage involved, just super-classy philly disco-soul magnificence!

as for "changin'," that's another one of my all-all-all-time faves but i didn't know esther sang it as well!!! i know a couple others on this cd, and would WELCOME other tracks of similar calibre and style.

    thankyouthankyouthankyou!

    take care,
    barry

So straight to the R&B chart book I go in search of info about Brown Sugar: it says that famed session singer Clydie King (one of Barbra's "Oreos" in "A Star Is Born") was Brown Sugar!!!! They list "Loneliness (Will Bring Us Together Again)" from 1973 on Chelsea as the hit.

Does anyone know this one and is this the SAME Brown Sugar???? :???:

    hey marky,

i'm not sure, but i THINK they might not have been the same brown sugars. shortly after i discovered the brown sugar on capitol i came across an lp by the brown sugar on chelsea and was really disappointed and promptly resold it. of course it's the kind of thing i might like more now, but i don't remember it having any philly-style dancefloor cuts, and it didn't sound like the same vocalist. i once wrote to vince montana (producer of the capitol brown sugar) and mentioned "the game is over" to him and he did remember it, but i don't remember him giving me any useful info. yet there's a chance that he included the capitol brown sugar in "philly ear candy" as a result of my over-the-top raving, so my writing to him was constructive nevertheless.

i think i have a second brown sugar 7" on capitol that's good, but not phenomenal like the aforementioned one.

    take care,
    barry

    Hey Discodisk,

well, when I read the name BOTTOM & CO. I knew that this CD is hot. I have an LP by this group (released by MOTOWN in 1976) and it's great, a soul/funk hidden treasure from the 70's. Lots of classic stuff on this compilation - the guy (or girl) who put the tracks together surely knows the job. THIS LOVE AFFAIR is one of the greatest moments by Gloria Gaynor - in fact, this tracks was released on her best album, PARK AVENUE SOUNDS, recorded on Philly - you know how good it sounds... All the other artists, DELLS, ORIGINALS, BOBBY WOMACK, TATA VEGA and soul master EUGENE RECORD are well represented on this CD with some pretty obscure gems (I don't know all these tracks, unfortunately). I'll manage to get me a copy of this amazing comp! Thanx for the info, DISCODISK!

Bet that will be a brilliant session!

With all the Cd's and music off the radio that I have ben hearing over the past few months, I am fast realizing what a great artiste Esther Phillips really was..

At first all I had heard of her was What A Difference A Day Makes, but now I have discovered tracks like her covers of Native New Yorker and the FANTABULOUSSSS Home Is Where The Hatred Is. That track truly knocks me out!!! I cannot believe that the Gil Scott-Heron original can beat that!! her version of Native New Yorker is also wonderful, I think ...

As it is my birthday soon, I shall go up to the West End of London with wads of cash to spend on some CDs (YIPPEE!!!)and top of my list is definitely gonna be Esther Phillips! :D Which Lps would you recommend, Discodisk, and how much of her stuff have been released on CD??

BTW my favourite cut from the listings above (OK... the only one I recognize) is the Tempations' Aiming At Your Heart. That is one LP I do have in my collection!! What a great soulful number that is!

hi jazz,i love all her stuff from her roulette and her atlantic stuff rrom the 60s through kudu to mercury.all her kudu albums are great and are getting hard to find now and a bit expensive 25/30 quid.capricorn princess/w.beck/alone again naturally/from a whisper to a scream/black eyed blues/performance. im sure they all came out on c.d here but only earlier this year though i must admit i didnt see any over there and i did look.her later mercury stuff was more discofied again using old standard songs as in what a difference and considering it was 4/6 years later and i think it was a bit stale at the time[im not saying they were bad albums theyre still good]but ive been playing our day will come a lot from the album heres esther are you ready its got a great backing! a lot of record collectors here dont realise that both home is and ive never found a man [that now gets northern spins]were released on singles here, they are really quite hard to find i got them both on promo at the time english kudu promos cool !
i can see you love "home" as ive seen you mention it a couple of times if you like that, another record from the same stable c.t.i is nina simone "baltimore" from the album of the same name and a single a sad story of a womans desire to get out of that city, have a look for that one. shame the single came out here on one of those poxy plastic label things, have a great time shopping and remember afterwards to go straight home

Well, I just put this CD in the player so I could listen as I browsed around our 'new' discomusic haunt. The Brown Sugar track came on and I totally lost it. I didn't recognize it when Barry was describing it to Marky. But, the second the vocals started and she said, "What's the matter with you", I was out of my chair and on the volume control. THIS IS ME, PEOPLE. Man how I loved this record back then and can't believe it totally left my mind. And now the title, "I'm Going Through Changes Now" is ringing bells. Now the hunt is on for Brown Sugar.

Gloria Gaynor just finished. Simply awesome. Have to check my albums and find out if I have it. And if I do, then I'll kick myself in the ass for not playing it enough. :x

DiscoDisk, thank you for sharing. This is one nice collection. Have to chill now, Esther is coming up. :D

    Discodisk:

Once again thanx for your advice!! :)

Having had a scout around the web it is plain that coming across Ms Phillips Lps is not so easy. A trip round some of the second hand record shops is required, m'thinks! I am most interested in her 70's Kudu stuff, possibly the Mercury stuff as well... Wouldn't mind finding From A Whisper To A Scream

Gives me something to do!!
