I'm surprised no one has mentioned the news revealed last month regarding Barry White's grave health condition. The press has reported that White, 58, is on dialysis after kidney failure, due to years of chronic high blood pressure. They have also reported that White is hoping to have a kidney transplant.

However, there are reports that White also suffered a massive stroke which resulted in brain damage. Two friends supposedly found White lying on the floor of his home in Sherman Oaks, CA-- unable to move or to speak on September 16. He was rushed to Cedars Sinaii Hospital where he remains.

White's family has only acknowledged the kidney failure to the press.

It's truly sad to me that most likely there will be no more new music from "The Maestro". White truly was a pioneer of DISCO what with "Love's Theme" and "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe", BOTH topping the Billboard Pop charts in late 1973/mid- 1974,respectively, paving the way for a whole new style of music to explode in discotecheques and on radio around the world. White's way with sexy rhythms and lush orchestration and that deep bass voice were truly classic and inspired many others to imitate and create the music we love at this site.

I'm hoping for the best, BUT it doesn't seem likely he'll ever fully recover.

    Your thoughts???

Hey Marky. You are so right on!
I heard this on the radio a month ago like you said. For whatever reason, I brain farted and didn't mention it here. Anyway you eloquently summed up my thought through your post. It doesn't look too promising for the "Maestro" but let's wait and see.

Although I never 'loved' his music, the man was an inspiration and one of the few true disco icons. It used to be quite entertaining to see grown women go glassy eyed at the mention of his name. What a sex bomb!!!

    Marky,

I never heard any of this. Thanks for the info. The news is truly saddening especially since he is so young.

About a year ago I caught his live outdoor performance for NBC's "Today" show one morning. White's singing was truly horrid in that he was struggling to hit notes and just generally sounded out of it. I was in shock at how his singing voice had deteriorated. Perhaps it was all health related considering the news you just gave us? Hope he pulls through so that he can enjoy his life.

    Peace.

I heard this on the news last month also. Like Paul, I let it go and didn't bring it up here. I think it just brought me down knowing how serious his condition is. Although I didn't get into his later albums as much, I still think the man is a genious, me being a 'lush sound' lover.

    I'm hoping for the best.

Sad. And didn't see a word printed about this down here.
Not long ago Barry had done a comeback with his wonderful album "Staying power". Had he problems already then? His voice sounds pretty fine on record. He was in an episode of "Ally McBeal" too.
Good luck to Barry, the man for whom women walked to their amplifiers and put the bass to the max...

A number of years ago, I was in a BJ's or Costco store in Connecticut (I think in Waterbury) and stopped by the audio/electronics section, which was near the front. One of the stereos there had a Barry White compilation CD playing one song after another. Needless to say, I hung out in that area for a long time before I continued with my shopping. That was a fantastic experience and led me to rediscover his great music, which I had forgotten about. Violins are where it's at.

The pop station WEBE 108 in Norwalk, Connecticut plays "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Babe" (and maybe one or two others) on many Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings. Meanwhile, the R&B station WYBC in New Haven, Connecticut has several White songs in their rotation including "Your Sweetness is My Weakness", "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe", "Darling Please Don't Make Me Wait Too Long", and "I'll Do For You Anything You Want Me To".

But my favorite is "What Am I Gonna Do With
You?", with "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" a close second.

What a shame that White recently said "I ain't no king of no disco." But he was probably justified in telling David Ritz in 1979 that disco was becoming "exploited and overexposed, raped and ruined by a business that never knows when to stop."

Love too much ("Beware"?) Barry White, the Maestro, the Man, the Guru of Love, the Love Beat creator, I guessed he is 62 hears old, a song of him could be "Don't Let'em Blow Your Mind" .

The record books list Barry White's birthdate as Sept. 12, 1944 making him 58. I would have guessed he was older also.

So sad  to hear about Barry's condition. I always thought he was doing fine and seemed very healthy on the "Behind The Music" program a couple of years ago.

All I can say is I hope he'll pull through and make a speedy recovery, and my thoughts and prayers are with him.

    That's right Funky Dude,

I saw that "Behind The Music" too!! Fantastic!!

BTW, he rejected the titles of 'King of Disco' and 'Guru of Love'. He said - "I'm not guru of nothing!! I'm barely the Barry White's guru!!"

    Peace

I read somewhere last month that Barry was ill too and that he need a liver transplant. The last time I saw him perform on TV in 2000 he looked healthy, yet his voice had changed through time.

I hope everything goes out well for him.

I know this is pathetic name-dropping when I should be expressing my sadness at the news (it is very upsetting as Barry is one of the greats) but Barry was on the same plane as me in 2000 from LA to Paris & I said at the time that he didn't look as big & brash as I expected him to look. Maybe he wasn't well then.

I'm sorry to hear the news. Although I'm not a big fan, his music does bring back some wonderful memories of my teenage years and slow dancing with my first girlfriend.

I'll keep him in my prayers, just as I keep all of you.

    God Bless.

    Hey,

really bad news about THE MAESTRO of Disco. My best wishes for him. Barry White's music experimented a great revival in the 90's (almost every 70's star experimented a revival in the 90's!). Some of his best records are made with LOVE UNLIMITED, a female trio with gorgeous voices - their first album is a soul classic.

I just opened my Vanity Fair for November and took a look at the inside foldout of the cover. This is the Music Issue; on the front section are Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Sheryl Crow, & Alicia Keyes; unfold to the next section: Norah Jones (Ravi Shankar's daughter, BTW), Eve, & Nelly Furtado; and unfold the final section to find Shirley Manson (Garbage) & (quelle surprise!!!) BARRY WHITE with Debbie Harry!!!!!!

Barry is looking great and so is Debbie (finally cut her hair to a more flattering length and looks like she lost some weight; Barry looks like he lost some too).

The title of the article about the photo shoot: "NINE GIRLS AND A GUY". "Gathering on the sultry streets of New York's Meatpacking District, nine reigning female musicians were delighted to pose for Annie Liebovitz, not least because of talent No. 10. the mojo-rific Barry White, perhaps the only man who could single-handedly balance the lineup".

Just heard today that Barry is at death's door still looking for a kidney donor. It's been said that his children may be possible donors.

    This just in 1-1-02

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Soul singer Barry White, battling kidney failure, is resting comfortably while doctors conduct tests to find a suitable transplant donor among his eight children, a spokesman said on Thursday.

The 58-year-old entertainer was hospitalized last month for kidney dialysis, but he is now at home and undergoing dialysis every other day on an out-patient basis as his condition improves, White's manager, Ned Shanker, told Reuters.

"He's doing really great. I was with him last night, and things are going really well," Shanker said, adding that the hefty singer has been dieting and has gotten his high blood pressure under control.

He said tests were being performed to determine whether any of White's children would make a suitable organ donor to provide a kidney to their father for a transplant.

"He's got eight kids," Shanker said. "They're doing tests. I don't think we're going to be doing a nationwide search (for a kidney). I think we've got it pretty well covered."

White's label, the Island Def Jam Music Group, disclosed in September that White was undergoing dialysis for kidney failure caused by a history of high blood pressure.

The singer, known for his rich bass vocals and musical love-maestro persona, has provided "the mood" for countless candlelight dinners and late-night trysts with such ballads as "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," and "You're the First the Last, My Everything."
